Magic J vs Jeffrey 116 vs Billy Goats / others

Looking for a new dedicated deep snow ski. Won’t be using it other than deep days and intermittent BC trips (revy, kicking horse, Whistler) when the world isn’t shut down.

Mostly ski a basin, copper, Ajax if I’m up that way.

Im not a huge dude - 5’ 7” and 150 lbs. generally like playful pow skis and like to ski / land switch a good amount. Been eyeing magic js and Jeffrey 116s. Have Jeffrey 102s and love them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Jeff 116 goes super hard on deep days, you can bomb drop almost anything and it’ll give you full confidence to do so. Magic J feels like you’re floating but it’s not as stable at speed, but it is quicker to pivot than the Jeff. BG is the ultimate hard charging pow ski, likes to go fast all the time. I’d peep the Faction CT 5.0, just copped one after putting it off for like 6 years. All time favorite ski for me, it floats, it charges, it turns on a dime. Watch Candide ski and you’ll understand why they haven’t changed the ski, because every time they try he bitches them out because he loves it. Also peep Black Crows Nocta, full rocker is fire and the thing is so quick to turn. It sucks on hard snow but you don’t buy a ski like that for it’s hard snow performance.... Revolt 121 and K2 Reckoner 122 are also sick for freestyle pow noodling.

I have magic js mounted 2.5 back from center there really nice with tons of float however there very heavy because it makes charging alot easier and makes them more stable cant recommend enough

If you’re landing switch, then I wouldn’t look into the billy goats. They need space to run as well, not a huge fan of them in trees. But if there’s a resort thats more open and long, then they’re golden. Super chargy and stompy but you’ve got to stay on top of them or else they’ll take you for a ride.

Interesting you say that, I always thought the BG does great in the trees. From what I read its supposed to pivot on a dime. Was actually considering it for my next pow ski. Can you compare to the Caylor?

Its probably just because i suck at skiing. I always found them cumbersome in tight places and took extra effort to get the noses where you want. Its just a super driven ski. If im on the caylors its a lot better. note: the caylors are mounted at -2.5 from center and have basically round edges. So theyre super easy to pivot, slarve and slash in the trees and just about everywhere. for the billy goat it seems like its the mount point that causes them to feel that way (-10cm if im not mistaken). thats my only complaint about them tho. give the BGs room to run and you can ride those noses all day long without a worry.

I Have owned all 3. I have also owned Caylors.

My thoughts. Magic J is fun, but I had no confidence with the ski at speed in PNW chop. Maybe if I was Tanner Hall, but I'm not. I ditched the ski pretty quick.

BG I feel needs room to run, and for it to really come alive in tree's you need speed. It absolutely demolishes crud. It's probably one of the best fall line, tree ski's when you have the speed.

Caylor, J11X has a touch less confidence at high speed than the BG, but comes alive better at slower speeds. Obviously more playful than the BG. I have had some of the best days of my life on snow on Caylors/Jeffery. FWIW I also daily a J108, and will be getting the next iteration of the Jeffery at it's widest waist.

Note: I mount all my ON3P's on the recommended line.

well put. +1

my buddy has a pair of the magic Js and they just seem way too light.

anything soft snow and even groomers the BG kills it. is it just me or do they kick your ass in moguls? i struggle lol

Caylor will forever be my favorite ski i think. gonna try some chipotle bananas and eventually (maybe next year or so) get on some Jeffrey 116s to see how they compare to the caylor.

good info @session.

I ride the Magic J in a 190 and I cannot say enough about how much I like it. I've felt no qualms about taking it up to really fast speeds, and it has felt pretty stable to me in general. It's definitely not light, and takes a lot out of me skiing it all day, but the float in pow is incredible. It does very well on the groomers too for it's width and I have no issues making carves on that. Maybe the 180 is a bit different, but the 190 is just a great great ski in my opinion. Also, because of the rocker it pivots very very easily, especially in the deep stuff. It skis short too, but in the best possible way.

That’s good to hear. I’ve got a pair of the 180s here unmounted. Think I’ll probably just keep these. 180s don’t feel too heavy at least compared to my buddy’s Jeffrey 116 181s. Those things felt like absolute anchors, but I’m also probably a little bitch lol.
