Magic Flashlights

Mike Benson:

"Hey guys,

Thank you very much for the kind words. The effect was created in After Effects. We had the riders hold flashlights with them turned on so they would be easier to "see." Then we used a modified version of Andrew Kramer's tutorial (with plugin Trapcode Particular) to create the streak. That was pretty simple, but it became a huge challenge when the camera moved, which meant we had to somehow move the entire generated beam with the camera, while keeping the emitter point on the light. "

Um, I am sorry if this post spoils the illusion for some people. But ya know, everyone's asking. :)"

When he says "After Effects" he is talking about Adobe After Effects CS3.

that movie isnt meant to be as epic as claim eheath. its supposed to be about having fun, and makin a sick movie. it was clearly all shot as high cascade. the owner of the camp is in the movie...

how can you not liek a snowboard movie? seriously snowboard has sick videos and id like to see someting going more thta way in skiing.

Just watched it earlier today. So sick. I'll probably get Familia, but this would be a good second choice for a movie.

Meh, i just saw some dope ass aftereffect/other graphics shit with snowboarding ive seen all the time. Not "creative" or "super sick" like everyone one is claiming. I mean they did use MGMT - kids, which was ALREADY USED in a snowboard trailer. The graphics impressed me, not the riding.

creative idea with the flashlight... but yeah, the song was used in a snowboarding teaser already this year. And i'm sure it's one they've seen. Whatever though. I was still entertained.

pfft i was way before this with magic dew.

i really dont think the riding was meant to impress.. as the trend with most snowboard movies coming up this year.. its all about fun. snowboarders dont use the word "epic" like all the kids on this site.. they are out to have fun and this was a clever idea.. just like the invisible skateboard in "Yeah! Right!"cliffnotes for you: DONT BE SO SERIOUS!

well i liked the idea, the pool ball thing impressed me, the song is so overused. i dont understand how people will buy it just from seeing some cool lights. im not saying it wont be i have no idea.

Cool special effects and really good production quality. I was entertained for sure.

I wouldn't agree that it was an amazing trailer though. it looked like a fun edit, but i can't see it being a great movie, and it doesn't make me say "why can't WE be like that!?!?"

IMO the editing did not match up with the song at all, and even though it looked like it was a lot of fun, it is still average level riding.

I would like to point out that when I go skiing, I want to have fun with my friends. When I watch a ski movie, I want to see things being thrown down, things I can't do as well, can't do at all, or I haven't thought up before

It's not like I DON"T want to see people have fun, but goofing around on boring features is something that I do when I am just hanging out having fun, NOT something I want to PAY to see other people do.

I don't think we should look at snowboard movies as a benchmark for what we should be doing. Let's do our own thing.

Dammit, I was going to do that.

That must have taken FOREVER to do though. I've done those light streaks before and they are quite tedious, especially when you're motion tracking.

its not a trailor really is it? are they making a whole movie like this or what?

i doesnt have like an end credit like most trailors. more like an edit.

thank you asian allen. all shot in high cascades snowboard park. alll those peolpe are coaches so they are filiming while coaching. hard to make a movie when you are already taking care of kids. you cant hat eon the double tasking that was done there..
