I've been getting mixed opinions on this so thought i'd make a thread and see what people say before i finalize my order.

im 6' 160lbs and getting made'ns. For now i will ski everything on them but in future i plan on these being my pow only skis. Where i ski we have lots of trees,chutes and tight spots as well as huge open spaces which you can just let rip on going flat out. I talked to a few guys on tgr forums(such as vicious) too. Should i get the 179 or 189 length? if i get 189 i will mount +5 or +3 if i get 179.

Does anyone know if the 189 will feel ALOT longer?(taking the mounts i said above into consideration) I have skied a 179 fujative in park and they feel tiny when u go fast so... i dunno.

im in the same situation. i say 189 due to extra stability and at +5 should hardly feel bigger than the 179.
 
your heavy enough to get the 89's, if you mount them at like +6 or so they wont feel so huge and they would still be great in park and bc jumps and stuff. 79's wouldnt be bad though, just depends on what your gonna use them for. i weigh 140 so it was easy for me to decide to get the 179's. either one will do fine. if its gonna be your pow ONLY ski then id say get 89's, but id recomend using them for park and stuff too.
 
I would go with the 189's mounted at +5.5-6 I have vicious 169's and they are alittle taller then I am, I mounted them at +5.25 and have hade no problems.
 
your mounting choices were right on the money. you can't go wrong with either size choice, but just be aware that the 189s won't turn on a dime like the 179s will. the 189s will definitely haul more ass and make bigger turns though. depends on what you want and what type of terrain you ski.
 
thats the point, where i ski there are some areas where you can fucking haul like nothing. but there are also places which can get tight.
 
im 5 9 140 lbs and i am gonna be rocking 189s center nounted and they will be my everything ski park pow whatever the fuck i feel like
 
It seems that slightly shorter skis are being used more, like Pollard with his Elizabeths that are only 172 if im not mistaken. You could just do 179. THey prolly wont feel to short just cause you have sooo much ski
 
i say get the 179s. much more versatile than 189s.

a 179 maden mounted at +4 would be an insanely sick everyday ski. it could take on anything and everything the mountain has to offer.
 
i think k2 should really make their pow skis a bit longer or have a 184 or so. 179 is just a bit short, as alot of people are riding 180 park skis and want something a tiny bit longer for pow but not 189cm.
 
i'm the same size as u and have decided to get 189 +5 as it makes it alot easier to move around yet is more stable + more float. 189 +5 should be just as easy to turn as 179 at 0.

(now waiting till i get shot down with a wrong answer ;))
 
so... sean care to explain what i said that was so wrong? Lets just say mounting stuff isnt my forte.
 
why not?, it doesnt make sense to mount back; when you mount a ski back in turn you are making a point in the ski to sink and a part to float,(tail and tip) im not sure about you guys but i dont want any part of my ski to sink, plus when you mount a pair of skis forward its easier to turn, spin and ride switch.

no you want your tip to float and your tail to sink, this keeps you up much better then having your tail up two because your tip is more likely to sink if the tail is high, Jeramy Nobis mounts his skis back from suggested mounting place so he can flot better, also you see people who dont know how to ski pow lean back this is to provide the same affect but also puts the skiers in the back seat, giving them no control. and also you should not mount farther then +10 on a K2 ski beacuse the binding mat only will cover bindings up to that distance. And on a big mnt. ski you need all the strength you can get.
 
Get the 189s i ride a SV and had it mounted at Midsole for groomers and pow crud and everything inbetween its sick but i could have gone for like +2 which would have given me just that little bit more tail for backseat landings. 189s @ + 4.5 will be sick everywhere. End of thread. Nick
 
^ like i said it makes part of the ski to sink (the tail) i love the way my madens float like a surfboard or snowboard through the powder(no part of my ski sinks) and its incredible to float effortlessly backwards through deep snow
 
To those of you who own the Made'Ns: How do they do in choppy snow or on bigger lines? I'm considering buying a pair, but they just seem so damn soft I think they would be worthless if I ever hit anything that was choppy or hard at all. It's either Made'Ns or Gotamas(yes, very different skis) for me come the next ski sale, but I'm still undecided.
 
the maden's are soft, they ski amazingly well in crud for how soft they are, the width of the ski makes up for the flex, if they were not soft i wouldnt like them, but mount them more forward than you think, trust me.
