Hey people

I'm looking at getting a laptop and I am looking into the macs. But I'm unsure what I should get;

I will be using it for work (typing word stuff ect), Adobe Programs and video editing software. Can anyone recommend which will best suit my needs?

Possibly dual boot as well (I don't think this matters though)

Thanks all. +Karma for good responses

i have an ibook g4 and i love it. no problems at all. plus it has all the stuff you need for work

ehhh, dont make the same decision that i did. I am on a macbook right now, and covers everything i really need. However, there are a vast amount of things that are difficult to do on a mac system. And for what it is, it is overprice. The reason that i opted for a mac was because they are fun to play with and i knew how to use it.
If i had made to make a dcision about what to computer to get again, i would just look into all the options instead of what was shiny

and... commence PC versus mac shitstorm

dont jump to macs right away. you can get a microsoft notebook with everything you need for half the price of a mac. sony vaio fw series, for 1000, you can get an amazing computer, with way better specs than a macbook, and it would fit your entertainment needs. check them out!

Macs are GREAT computers. Good choice. They make doing everything 100% easier, and not to mention faster. All mac books are pretty good for just about any sort of computing activity, but if you plan on doing a lot of photo/video editing then you may wanna spend a little more and get the 2 gigs or RAM, It just makes your computer run a lot faster and better when doing a lot of things or working on large projects, which is just about the ONLY con of having a macbook. Happy shopping

fcp..

if you're going to NOT use illegal software for editing, then iMovie is better than that stupid ass microsoft movie maker any day.

stop trying to keep this kid on the dark side derek

haha jokes i love my macbook but pc's do have their benefits as well

if you want to become part of an incredibly popular and hip sub-culture buy a mac, if you want a laptop that does it's just and is cost-effective get anything else.

lol.. alienwares are just alittle pricy, and those are gaming computers. you can edit video and such on them but youre paying for way more than you actually need to edit video

If you plan on editing movies you're going to have to fork out for a macbook pro to get a firewire port.

The one thing i hate about macs is:

PRICE!!!

i can get a dell with internals that could blow a mac out of the fucking water for cheaper then a stock mac. a $700 dell could rape a $1200 mac now a days and its almost half the price....

people always bring up the mac being super expensive argument which is one of the only arguments that is not based on personal preference. While yes they are more expensive but it is because they are worth it. You will get a machine that will last you years beyond any windows computer (unless you baby the shit out of it) and apple support is amazing. I have owned my macbook for 2 years and it is sill holding strong. its just as fast as the day i opened the box and the battery still lasts for hours. if you look at the avarage (remember avarage) 2 year old mac vs. the avarage 2 year old pc you will find way more macs outpreforming the pc's and probably outpreforming new pc's. the resell value is generly far greater than any windows based system. I would never buy a 2 year old windows computer but i would buy a mac if i couldnt afford a new one. So overall buying a mac is more of an invensment than buying a pc, you can sell it in a couple years to help afford a new machine.

But if you look at specs only macs are overpriced, there are far superior machines that are cheaper and get you more bang for your buck. I really dont believe that anybody can defend that owning windows rots your system to death, terrible fragmented hardrives, shitty ass firewalls and more bs. You can tweak the machine to run fast again but it is a constant struggle. but if yout looking for a computer that will last you years without having to worry about everylittle detail, i would choose a mac.

1 more thing, you can get FCE for cheap as fuck with a student discount

the new unibody macbooks do not have firewire, except maybe the upgraded white macbook. the macbook pro has a firewire 800 as its only firewire port

Yeah that's lame as fuck.
I use my firewire port all the time.
I will say I have had my Macbook for 4 years. I have the black one and it keeps trucking amazingly. It doesn't even have the Core 2 Duo it has the Core Duo.
That being said, most of my friends with windows machines have replaced their computer in that time. I love mine and going off to college I am going to get another mac for sure.

im on a last gen macbook(black) with 4 gigs of ram, and im running safari, itunes, mail, wow, ichat, skype,,word, photoshop, apature, fcp, and lime wire right now and i have 0 slow downs. everything runs perfect. for sure get a mac, once you get 1 you can never go back
