Mac Question? How to take snapshot of what appears on screen?

Do you know how to capture a screenshot on a mac?  the quick key command to snap a photo of whatever is on your screen?

or to take ones of the size of your chocie use apple shift 44. then a compass will come up and hold do wn your mouse and drag to make a rectangl, let go and you have your image.
