Lutsen Conditions

I am heading to lutsen for the xmas holiday...anyone have a report on conditions up there?

snow coverage, terrain park, moguls, etc???

photos?

Well as of today they only have one park open. The one on Eagle. Only half of Moose is open and Mystery isn't open yet.

Not looking too great at the moment, but that can only change.

Yeah they'll be making snow.

I think in a week that will be possible, as long as the weather cooperates. It's supposed to warm up a little but they're supposed to get snow from the 21st-23rd.

Any locals have knowledge of secret cliff stashes up there? I explored a bunch last spring at mountain meltdown and found many a baby cliff to launch and it was good fun. mostly in one zone in that "double black" area to like... skiers left of that one chalet by the gondola station?

Also please report conditions of Papa Charlie's.

I know which place you're talking about and that's the only spot I can really think of.

I thought for a while they were going to expand on the backside of Eagle mountain? I have done some hiking back there and it seems like it could have some burly stuff, anyone ever check it out?

Yeah, Papa Charlie's seems to be the only joint to really party at, but what about those cliffs?

I was referring to that spot on Moose that you were talking about

would it be worth it to drive 8 hours up there from Iowa, or just drive the 13 or whatever it is out to Colorado?

Dubuque, Iowa. its just by the Wisconsin and Illinois border.

but thats what i figured, but i just wanted to make sure

the main issue with hucking on the shore is not enough runout due to forest type and overbrowsing by deer. If you got AT gear, there are some 15' footers outside of finland along powerline cuts and also some on oberg, Leveaux cliffs out pretty hard but may have a few lines when it loads up. If yer up, stop by Lutsen Rec and ask for Rory, I can share some spots for anyone interested. BTW The small cliff drops at Lutsen proper are on bears den and bobcat on moose, also some small drops between experts cutoff and upper bridge but the runout flats out on the return trail.

Was there on sunday, park setup was minimal to none on eagle, caribou had a few things setup rather poorly and it was so foggy when I was there you could hardly hit anything anyway. No moguls yet and the grand majority of all the groomed runs save mystery were covered. All the good shit between trails was basically grass.

There's a cliff near the double blacks on Eagle facing ullr. It's ten to fifteen feet, probably the biggest cliff you can hit in bounds. It's easy to find but somewhat hard to hit because the trails dont actually lead to it. You have to take your skis off and climb up around the edge.

Gapping off the cat track into the second part of expert's cutoff is fun, although the landing can be very flat. I managed to mess up a ligament in my knee after blasting it.

The eagle return drop is pretty small but fun if you can avoid the pizza party mobs who coagulate in that area, my 11 year old hits it regardless of conditions. ive always wanted to hit the eagle cliffs but im 6'3 180 so i pick up mad speed when im airbourne and again, insufficient runout. The funnest drop inbound i had forgot about earlier is lower wildcat, a bit obscure of a spot but it nice and sheltered, maybe about 12-15 (u know how that goes :p) and rarely skis out after a dump. also bears den has some fun 10'+ drops, it aint out west but we love what we can get here
