if it is his time, I am so sorry. It is horrible and they all have their time. There is nothing to prepare you for it, and you should never feel bad or weird about grieving no matter how long it takes.

also, since this is your thread I will fill you in. My cat got attacked by a coyote and it broke his leg amongst other injuries. I was told to either amputate his leg, put him down, or pay 4000.00 for surgery and he would retain function of his leg but still have a limp. I didn't have the money but paid for the surgery on credit and am living in an indoor tent with him during his 8 week recovery. A much different situation than yours because my cat is only 1 years old and a different illness/injury, but thought id fill you in on why these posts are relevant in your thread.
 
I would do whatever it takes to help him regardless of the cost.

Take him to an animal hospital, not a regular vet. Many years ago we took a cat to a regular vet because she had kidney disease. They said that there was nothing that could be done to help her and that she would die within a few weeks or sooner. We then took her to an animal hospital and they did what they could for her and now, many years later, she is still alive.

To find an animal hospital in your area just do a web search for "animal hospital [name of big city near you]" or something like that.

tl;dr take him to an animal hospital, not a regular vet

The problem is with lung cancer is usually a piece breaks off and goes strait to the brain, most people with lung cancer die of brain tumors. If you don't have the money you can also just leave your car on and keep it in the garage. it's a very painless way to go, you just feel like you fall asleep from carbon monoxide poisoning.
 
It may seem like its too soon, and everyone is different, but when I've had to put down pets, I've gotten new pets very soon afterwards. It isn't replacing them, nothing can ever replace them, but I realized that I was left with an opening in my home, heart, and wallet to give another pet a great life. If you're feeling up to it before too long, I'd recommend adopting a new pet. You are obviously a good pet owner with a lot of love to give. You could give a pet in need a great home in Jet's honor.

I went through something similar a few months ago with one of my cats. She got the cancer and it was the first time that I have ever had to make that decision. The vet was awesome and gave me some time with her as I balled my fucking eyes out. I was a mess for a while over it. Then, a few weeks later after I've quit the crying and whatnot, I come home from work to find some mail from the vet. She had sent me a handwritten card and on the front had drawn a picture of my cat and on the inside she wrote the sweetest note ever and had also apparently had taken a paw print of my kitteh and put in there. Needless to say, I lost my shit.

Losing animals, whether they're cats or dogs or whatever, is never easy.

I get your love for your cat. My cat is literally my best friend. I can always count on her to make me happy and there is nobody in my life who can do that besides her.

Seriously, Jet is such a good name. Little badass cat is doing badass cat shit in cat heaven. Eating mice and poopin in the neighbors flower beds and shit

fuck, that's rough. some people say it's dumb to get sad over animal life but pets are on the same level as humans when it comes to family members. putting them to sleep forever sucks ass just as much as saying goodbye to a human.
 
So as you know my cat died almost 3 years ago (in a week).

Well it looks like his brother (my brothers cat)may be on his way out too. He has been throwing up constantly and shitting in the worst possible areas (in front of main door). Going to the vet this week.

Also, OP, hang in there. The shit is rough but you'll get over it in time.
