Lucas Stahl Madsison won suiperunknown?

stoked on this guy for sure. im glad not some other cookie-cutter skier like the past winners was selected, besides logan obviously. i thought dom had it on lock honestly, his edit numbed my skull consistently, but that being said LSM definately has a ton to bring to the table. and i cant wait to see it. good job L1

*I'll add something here.

Just because I think their decision was a little weird doesn't mean I'm not stoked that a company would choose a rider who is about creativity and what looks cool rather than what's hardest. Frankly, I would rather watch a park shoot where they set up many smaller, creative features than some huge rails and jumps any day, and I've been wanting production companies to start doing that for years.

Unfortunately, having worked for a ski film production company, I know that NS doesn't make up as large a part of the target audience as we think (not sure if this is the case for Level 1, but I would assume it's similar). A huge part of the audience is very uneducated about what 'style' is, and small and creative tricks don't sell compared to superpark-type segments. Lucas's video didn't necessarily prove to me that he would be able to hold his own in that type of situation, so I'm just not sure how his future with a major production company will turn out. As I said, I hope for the best, but I'm still skeptical.

If it was down to being hilarious and creative I think John & Stephen should have won!

ummmm wut. da fuck.

he looks like hes "having fun" and all, but when it comes down to it, hes just not that good of a skier....

at least compared to others in the competition. seriously...

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH

at first I was like

who dat

but then i remembered this edit.

/images/flash_video_placeholder.png

he kills it. I still think austin should have won though, but they both have insane style and i'm not disappointed this year at all.

hipster judges trying to speculate on the ''potential'' of a skier (who happens to hop rails a lot) instead of valuing the actual talent of a skier.

oh and we won't see him in L1P movies starting 2013.

the whoe cast is a pool of OG east coasters, pwhite and chris logan are the last of em....seany logan

liam downey

ahmet

rainville

LJ

compton

wesson

tom....no rookie can even phathom skiing at their level, he did his best, and some how that was enough...

thats a dick thing to say. i really enjoyed logan's segment. plus he's an engineer which i can relate to!

I haven't been following SU at all, but after watching that kid's entry, I gotta say I'm not particularly impressed... Nothing super creative, and nothing an above-average park skier couldn't do. I won't say I disapprove just yet though - I'll wait till Level 1 drops this year's movie before I start judging.

Ross was my pick. Guy goes HAM, has come back from so many injuries, and continues to kill it.

You guys need to understand something, in order to make an entertaining ski movie you need variety and uniqueness. You can't have all the riders throwing the exact same dub cork 12's in all the segments, it would be boring and repetitive.

The segments need to come together to make a whole, and yet stand apart from each other at the same time. There is a shit ton of good skiers out there, its mind blowing how many kids are killing it these days, but most are just playing follow the leader with tom or b-dog or whoever their favourite rider/style is.

Level 1 obviously realized that they need to pick someone who stands out from the pack, not just a technically flawless rider. This Lucas kid brings flavour, and thats more entertaining to watch than robotic tricks that have already been perfected by 100 other riders.

you're telling me ross didn't have flavour? or dom? or any of the guys with better tech tricks AND more style?

Ok I like this guy and he shreds but FUCK BLACK AND WHITE EDITS. Shit actually makes mad, it's the 21st century and it's bland as hell to look at for more than 30 seconds.

I wonder what would happen if Lucas tried that lazyboy rodeo on a super park jump.

Either pure awesomeness or death, but most likely death I would think.

I guess not, you try and explain.

And joshua that would the sweetest thing ever, and i would retract all of my statements against the guy if he does do that.

I just think many of the other edits were not robotic style, and were better than this guy. And yes, i am kind of trolling

honestly they should probably have sacked it all in and picked up frej cos he can double cork 7... i mean he didn't enter but i guess thats ok too?

lucas' edit was sick though, looking forward too some cool shots of him in the park segments...

The other submissions doesn't bring anything new to the table. Of course some of the tricks in the other videos haven't been done exactly like they do it. But it's nothing unique, and that is what you need today because there is to many people doing what you call "tech tricks" with the only difference, from the 100 others who can do the same trick, probably being for example a tweak or a certain headmove when you land. For example, Frej Jönsson did a double cork 7 a few days ago, THAT was unique. Something that no one else has done before, a whole new kind of spin. Bobby Brown did a triple 16. That wasn't unique, it was of course insane, but "all he did" was adding an extra 180 to a trick he, and a few others, already have done.

Why would Level 1 need another rider filming with them doing the same trick that the riders they already got does? Why would they be interested in another rider who can bust out a double cork 10 double grab at a park shoot when they already got at least 4-5 who can do that? You can't say that the style of the other videos was better, it's not a fact, it's your opinion, that is what you think. But what you can say is that a lot of the tricks that Lucas does is tricks that no one else was doing. THAT is a fact.

Idk man, I feel like Ross did A LOT of stuff in his edit that I had never seen before: fence gap, backflip through trees, up rail holding onto bungee, 100 kink rail, and then a whole bunch of other bangers.I had seen most of the stuff Lucas had done before minus the lazyboy tricks and one or two rail tricks, the urban stuff was nothing new at all.

Also, I don't even know why people put normal park shots in their edits. Level 1 doesn't shoot normal park, they should stupid big superpark features and urban.

I was surprised LSM didnt make finals. I could tell from his SU edit that he definitely had wayy more tricks than the video showed. Im pumped for him

what im hearing is that everyone thought his entry lacked technicality and that a lot of people could do the tricks LSM is doing....

but here is where your argument falls apart...

no one else is doing them...

his tricks might look easy, and you may think that they lack technicality, but the fact of the matter is that he is the only one doing him, and that makes him unique. He has the creativity to stylize his riding in a way that no one else has done before and that makes him an attractive rider to level 1. Everyones failure to grasp that concept astounds me. You might not like his entry the most but you can definitely remember it because it stands out as unique. Now when I buy a ski movie i want to see a unique style and different tricks that i couldn't find in the surplus of internet edits on this site.

For all the bitching this site does on how contests should be judged more on style and less on technicality, it does seem ironic that when unique style does take the win over technicality, you also complain. just something to think on.

isnt that the basis of forums? to discuss opinions? and share your thoughts? quit your bitching. read the title, if its SU related dont click it its that simple and leave it to others who want to discuss it -_-

I liked watching the lines that he took and those weird tail drop landings and what not.

This contest basically always ends up working and im sure it will again.

You guys are dumb, this guy clearly has potential to bring something to Level 1 park shoots and I don't get why you guys are hating on that. I'm sure they already have a million shot of people doing switch ups and all your other faggy park tricks *cough most of the finalists cough* so why would they pick someone like Torvinen or something to give them more what they already have?

And it's unfair for you guys to put everyone who is up for superunknown against Wallisch. yes he has been the most successful, but several of the superunknown predecessors have fallen off the map. Valuar (unfortunatly), Clarke, Zicat, and whoever the fuck else has won it over the years have faded away, face it you guys, winning this competition is not about rising to the top of skiing, its about giving opportunity to potential skiers which (argue as much as you want) LSM is.

actually berman kinda ''owes us shit'' cause we buy his movies and make level1 what it is. in the end he makes the movies to get people stoked , if people arent stoked on someone why shouldnt they be able to tell their opinion....

haha berman doesn't owe you a thing. No one is going to not buy the next movie because of a super unknown winner. NS is not Level 1's entire customer base. Some people buy ski movies to see skiing, doesn't matter by who.

y'all need to shut up and quit complainin'

he's super fun to watch and obviously shreds. of course there are others that could've won but it's level 1s choice and im stoked to see the outcome. plus quite a few of the finalists already film with other companies and are sure to make it in the industry regardless.

just be stoked for the kid, he deserves it

I never understand why people on NS get personally offended by this contest. If Level 1 wants a certain athlete in their film, then they have every right to pick them.

other than his tailpresses, that edit was awesome definitely some unique stuff, stoked to see what he comes out with in the movie
