People just understand the plot, not the subtleties. But overall Tolkein didn't think people should HAVE to understand the subtleties, it was purely a story for the sake of the story, it didn't need some deep message about the real world. Still, if you get past the surface it's more enjoyable.

the return on the king will ndoubtedly be the best film of the year...i think these are some of the best films since like...the matrix. the series kept getting worse..but the LOTR series kept getting better. They did a really good job of keeping the movies like the books. The only movie that did a better job of that was Harry Potter. Takes 2 hours to read the book and 2 hours to watch the movie.
