it's not about freedom of speech, but of thoughts! anti racist people seem to refuse people the right to be racist! i'm tolerant, so i'm not racist but have no pb with people who are!

 
hey rebel, i didnt read everything so i dont know if someone corrected you or not, but because you make a generalization about a race doesnt make you a racist. it just means you sterotype people. but like you said, it doesnt mean its mean its just something you should wisen up on.

Irish, consider the following conversations:

Joe: Were the girls at the show hot?

Tim: They were all black.

Joe: Damn.

You'll notice the implication that black girls are less attractive. All they are doing is stereotyping, but in my opinion, it's racism. If that doesn't convince you, how about this:

Joe: So were the girls at the show hot?

Tim: They were black. I don't like their big lips and big noses.

Joe: Agreed.

A little more direct, but it's the same conversation as above. They're just stereotyping. The point is, stereotyping, prejudice, generalizing, etc. based on the colour of skin or even on cultural differences is rasism.

There used to be a really good site at www.ihateblackpeople.com that pointed out the every day things people do but didn't realise was rasist. Shit like saying 'I have black friends,' that is utterly moronic, but the visible majority just doesn't seem to understand. Unfortunately, the site isn't up right now.

It's hard to come up with a generalization about a race without being racist, even if it's a positive one. 'Black people are cool' sounds alright, but consider 'Black people are good at basketball', and you'll get the idea. It's still racist, it's just not discriminatory.

i believe that in order for a comment to be racist, you not only have to make a generalization about a certain race, but then also qualify it as being inherently inferior or superior to another race.

so its ok to say black guys are usually athletic, thats just a generalization

but saying black guyz are usually more athletic than whites would be racist

like J.D. said, its got to be discriminatory or prejudicial to a certain race

i dont think saying black guys have bigger bone structure is discriminatory, although im guessing its not scientifically true either. its just a stereotype

rebel i couldn't agree more with this statement, I feel makeing a statement like that is false, and I have asked teachers(not saying that teachers know all the answers) if that is correct way to make a statement like that and they have told me that it is ok. I have always thought it was wrong even when my teachers told me it was ok. The point is, that when teachers in public schools are just as ignorant to the facts of the above statement then the kids being raised in that the school start to think its ok.

When you make that statement, you are implying 'black people are more athletic than the visible majority.' If that wasn't the case, then you'd be saying 'black people are average.' Try comparing the statement 'black people are athletic' to the statement 'white people are intelligent.' Funny how when you generalise the majority as better than the rest it seems so much more racist than generalising the manority as superior does. You see my point? Being objective means looking at a person and not seeing colour, but seeing a person. A lot of people like to say that's what they see, but most of these people are lying to themselves.

ACLS, if you figure out how to change that, let me know. Infact, publish it, 'cause you'll probably make a ton of cash and get awarded a nobel prize. Being somebody who's coloured and raised in a predominantly white school / neighbourood, I have learned to accpet it, deal with it, and learn from it. The most valueable lesson I took from highschool was learning how to not give a fuck what people think while not offending people. If you can learn how to react to people without getting a reaction out of them, you'll do okay.
