1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future? Probably around $400-$600

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own? Not a ton but I’ve used my friends sometimes

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc) iPhone 14, and a Nikon D40 that only takes photos

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc) Mostly just going to film skiing but I also want to film mtb as well

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming? I think I’ll be doing most of the filming, but I also want to be able to have my friends film

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

Mostly follow cams or just stand on the knuckle and film

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

Don’t have a computer yet hoping to get a decent laptop soon

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

probably going to use power director once I get a laptop

No but really try to find a small handycam that can film 1080/60 and you want a known brand (dont get that cheap amazon 4k fake brand) for both skiing and mtb it easy to carry around and to use and you can upgrade it by getting a fish eye too

I really liked my canon g40, it’s really small and light, records onto SD and has a touchscreen which makes it pretty easy to get all the settings and what they do down. I think I got mine for around $400

any old handycam from Panasonic or Sony will work as long as you make sure it shoots to sd. depending on the look pure going for you'll want either 720/1080, but make sure the cam can shoot 60 frames a second. if you're gonna be passing it off to homies, don't throw more money than you're comfortable with losing in case someone fucks up.

also none of this matters until you have a laptop, so I'd do that first. as far as software, iMovie on laptop is a great entry option, but you can download DaVinci resolve free and get comfy with a real software too.

Yeah you can put a fisheye on, I believe it’s 58mm thread but unsure. Currently there’s one on eBay going for $500 and two going for $600. I would watch for a little while though and look for a better deal
