Looking for Ski suggestions for 70% east coast 30% west skier

Intermediate/lower end of advanced. I am looking for new skis, I currently have the 2017 Volkl Kendos. They are fast and stable at high speeds due to their metal, but not good for trees, jumps on the side of groomers etc. They are also too heavy at slower speeds.

I am looking for ski recommendations for a 70% east coast 30% west ski thats good for groomers/high speeds but is also more playful than the kendo.

I have looked at the following skis: J Skis Allplay: might be too playful for me but seem awesome. J Skis Masterblaster: these seem perfect besides the metal, i do not want another heavy ski. ON3P Kartel 96: might be too park oriented. Icelantic Pioneer 96: was very interested in these but heard they are not good on hard pack?. Armada arv 96: too parky?. Head Kore 99: i like how light they are but reviews say too stiff?.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Blizzard Rustler 9 is your perfect ski. Like a mix of free ride ski with a metal carving ski. Metal under foot but not on the tip/tails to make it lightweight and playful but solid when carving on groomers. Mount point in between a park ski and a traditional ski like your Kendo but you can move it up a touch(a cm or so) to make it even more playful.

Have a pair as my daily driver in the East and they are a lot of fun at all speeds.

Awesome I will check them out, thanks. Any other suggestions for something without metal?

The Rustler 9 is about the same weight/lighter than most skis without metal. In the same range of the Armada/J Skis All Play, Kore 99 and lighter than the Kartel 96. Metal gives stiffness and dampening underfoot and then it’s got carbon fiber in the tips tails to keep it’s swing weight low. Only one partial sheet of metal underfoot rather than the two full sheets of metal most skis have.

The Moment PB&J is a little wider, a full twin tip but almost the exact same stiffness and similar weight to the Rustler 9. Longer turning radius but can do smaller turns too, very stable at speed and great through crud for it’s weight. Ski I bring out when I want to do faster GS turns with ease everywhere.

Id move up to the 10. I love that ski. Perfect on hardpack but has enough play to slash turns in the woods and side stashes.

(im on the east coast regularly skiing icy gore, stratton, mount snow with it)

All the Rustlers are great skis! The 9 is more hard snow biased, so it’s the stiffest(but still playful), least rocker and the best carver of the bunch. The 10 is a bit softer flexing ski with a bit more rocker. It will be even more fun in softer snow with better float but not as quite as good on groomers although still great for a 102mm underfoot.

The PB&J kinda splits the two with the same flex as the 9 but wider underfoot with similar tip/tail width as the 9. Most stable of the 3 at high speeds but the Rustlers are more fun at lower speeds.

This is a lot of help, im strongly considering the 9 or 10 now. I wish they had something around 96-98 but i guess theres not much of a difference

If you mostly ski east coast get the 9 over the 10 imo. Another ski to check out that wasn’t mentioned here is the vwerks mantra, while I haven’t used the vwerks mantra I’ve used the vwerks katana and it was an awesome ski, if I didn’t ski park daily and live on the east coast I would have definitely bought a pair when I tried them. In my experience the vwerks skis are a good bit lighter and have more pop than normal Volkls but they still have a Volkl feel on harder snow.

at 180cm length its 94 underfoot. thats close enough to your 96-98. Pair it with a 90mm brake and they tuck right in out of the way

Black Crows Camox? 97mm underfoot, playful all-mountain, good amount of camber, nearly twinned but not a straight up park ski at all.

I've never skied the ARV 96ti, but of it's just significantly stiffer and more poppy than the regular version that could be an option? I know you said you didn't want metal but I that ski doesn't weigh very much.

The Camox actually looks pretty decent, going to read more reviews on it. I think the ARV ti are going to be too heavy for what im looking for, thanks tho!

bentchetler 100

I hate to argue, but I have to disagree. I have the Backland 102's which have carbon fiber and are borderline, meh, on the hard stuff, but good in any other condition. The Bent Chetler has none; full wood core and way to light for comfort. This ski is seriously on the bottom end of the spectrum are not a great choice for Eastcoast frontside conditions and are more designed for people looking to learn to ski powder back country. In fact, if that is what you are looking for, you will be dying for a Rustler 10 or better after seasons end. For your ski level and what you are looking for though, I'd stick to the brand and go for the new M5 Mantra. That ski was SICK!!!!! and likely my next choice if I can find them.

I am just giving a suggestion based off OP’s description of what he needs. Sounds like he is shying away from stiffer skis. I have been skiing the bentchetler in all kinds of conditions and it Is great. Just because you have skied the backland does not make you omnipotent of all atomic products

The Bent Chetler 100 has a similar side cut and feel to the Moment PB&J but lighter and softer in the shovel. Still a fun playful ski that performs quite well once you move the mount up from it’s “all mountain” mount which is back a bit too far to make it playful. Great value for the money.

Volkl M5 is a stiffer, more directional ski that would outperform most of these skis as far as groomers but not as fun of playful and more of a traditional mount. If you wanted a wider Kendo with a similar feel, this would be the ski. If you wanted a similar ski but a little more fun and forgiving on bumps but still powerful underfoot, the Rustler 9 would the ski.

Yea i am trying to get something a little different than the kendo, got out there saturday on a really icy day and the kendo was great for those conditions but again looking for more playful. I think im going to demo the rustler 9s first, then try to see what mountains have the pb&js and the ripsticks. Thanks for your help guys

I have that ski as well and while it rips well and i find it playful, it sucks on ice and is soft. I really wish they did not make it that soft when they overhauled it. I actually recommended to line to make a magic chronic by adding carbon stringers to stiffen it up. The tail is just toooo soft on it for an all mountain ski. the tips are soft too and when you rail carves on hardpack its very easy to overski them. You have to be prepared when you hit their limit.

This can also be said of the Bentchetler 100 (which i also have) and found it to be way to soft for hardpack frozen east coast days. I struggled for grip on lies at gore when it was icy. It did well on groomed snow but the minute it hit something hard it didnt want to hold due to its soft flex and rockered shape. SO much so that i was wishing i brought my rustler 10 that day instead. I may end up selling the bentchetler because of how soft it is for east coast. it became a ski i wanted just because it was new and i loved the 120s.
