Im doing a research paper for english and im looking for articles on free-skiing, if you have any info feel free to post. Was salomon the first twin tip? and articles on that kind of stuff would be much appreciated. The paper is on how skiing all really started about 4,000 years ago and how it evolved over time to the different aspects skiing today and how ( I believe ) it eventually lead to the invention of the snowboard. Right now im on the free-skiing part of the paper and its hard to find any real straight facts. It has to be about 10 pages so i need some info.
and i have a question- who did park first snowboards or skiers or at the same time?i think bear mt had the first park or something right?

thanks, i will also post the paper when finished for the enjoyment and feedback of newschooelrs.

Snowboarders started it, and were the first to ride parks. Freeskiing started as a response to the popularity of snowboarding, and twintips were created to give skiers more freedom in the park. JP Auclair and Mike Douglas helped create the first twin tip, which was a Salomon 1080

I've seen a video posted here before that is with mike douglas I think and its him just talking about when they all first started doing park, with footage, it was really cool.

yeah i think so

and id say snowboarders did park first, but not legitimately. forgot your other questions though

First full length twin was the 1080, line invented twin tipped snowblades prior to this did they not?

by park do you mean rails? because skiers have been doing jumps and tricks for ages, ive seen an old ski film from the 70's that has a skier double backing over a moving train.

first semi modern twin was the Olin Mark IV, way back in the day. straight, pointy tip, square tail.

Then there was the K2 poacher, the first modern twintip, which was made in 95 in limited numbers. the 1080 was the first widely available one, made commercially available the 98/99 season

Booyah.

The Olin Mark IV is the hotdoggin' grandfather of the modern twin tip.

K2 Poacher has a tenuous claim to the first modern twin, but there's no doubt that the Teneighty (the name of the ski is spelled out, not a number) ushered in the twin-tip revolution.

Terrain parks were originally "snowboard parks" and at a lot of mountains skiers weren't even allowed in.

if you want stuff from like realllly old times (the 4000 years you mentioned) there was this book mentioned in freeskier awhile back called "two planks and a passion" thats all about the earlier origins of skiing. i never read it, but it's definitley worth checking out. hope this helps

As much as its downplayed today, twintips truly did come after skiboards. Line claims to be the first to make skiboards. Look around you can find more history on that part of things.

bear mtn has released a series of videos about the bear/snow summit parks. in this one they talk about the first official park. until that point nothing was really official. however, they had handdug halfpipes and comps in the eighties. snowboarding didn't come from skiing it came from the snurfer and surf/skate culture. if you want to find the start of freeskiing look into the extreme comps. i think the first one was in alyeska in '91. also, the jackson hole air force, the greg stump movies, and of course, snow blades.

line skis were founded in 99 the year after the teneighty came out and for all you old guys remember poaching pipe haha good times skiers werent allowed in

Mike Douglas and Mingo the Canadian Salomon Team Manger were pretty much responsible for the creation of the twin tip, they got the ski into production first. Last year was the 10 year anniversary of the Teneighty. There is a good Salomon Freeski TV episode from last year with the history. You should also contact Mike Douglas through Facebook and he would be happy to help you with the info. I worked a lot on this project last year. It is an awesome story of how twin tips came into fruition and pretty much changed the sport forever. For kicks you should watch the original Poor Boyz flicks from 10 years ago.

exactly why you do NOT go to newschoolers to do "research." Here is someone who sounds like they know their shit yet they are completely wrong.

Line made their first skiboards in 96. Salomon followed with the snowblade in 97. Skiboarding was in the Xgames 98 and 99, then twintips took over.

these guys started it all

try to find some old ski movies like state of mind, degenerates, or the original ski movie.

did you know that the first twin-tips were made by heading the tails of a pair of skis and bending them in a vice? many kids tried this back in the day before there was an abundant supply of twin-tips around.

GLEN PLAKE!!

THEN MCCONKEY

THEN SHRAGLER

THEN TWIN TIPS

THEN PARABOLICS

THEN AFTERBANG

THEN THE BIRD

THEN THE FUTURE!!

SCIENTIFIC FACT!!!!!!

Pollard, who rode the old white 1260 without poles in some skiboard flicks. Pretty sure he's the first "skiers" on Line. I don't have proof though, other than a 2001(ish?) Line team video with him in it, on VHS, with Mike Laroche as well. haha, wtf happened to that guy?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Pollard is the first skier who rode Line. Then Mike Laroche or maybe Kris Ostness?

One of those three has to be the correct answer.

I remember reading an article in an old freeze about some pro who started skiing on twins like that, went pro in like 2 months. Really inspiring, but now that I'm older just depressing haha

Wasn't Mike Nick (i think thats his name) aka the person who does the TC intro songs one of thier first customers or something? idk if that would be first or around what time but just throwing out what i know.

there's an article in Freeze from years ago with the Salomon timeline that might help you out.

Take a look at Greg Stump and that whole era and get your hands on a copy of some old ski movies and magazines like Axis, Freeze, and old Freeskiers

Whoever said Olin MK IV is correct.

WAY before the Teneighty. The argument could be made that the Teneighty was the first legit mainstream twin, but definitely not the first.

im not making this up .... the first twin tip ski was made in 1938 and was known as ''the goon'' ski, it was designed to flick snow up at the back. thers an article in freeskier from years back i'll see if i can dig it up.

june mountain, california had the first halfpipe at a ski area. they used hay bails. i believe hood started making pipes around the same time.
