Looking for first pair of skis to buy.

I have been renting Skis for the past two seasons and have been wanting to buy a pair of skis, what should I buy? I would like an all-mountain pair that has a waist width good enough for the west coast, I am 6'2" and weigh 190 lbs. My budget is also around 600 - 800 dollars for a pair of skis without bindings.

Do you have a particular style of ski you like? Twin tip? Flat tail? do you like playful or charging skis? how aggressive are you?

id recommend looking at

momebt wildcat 108

moment countach 110

Moment deathwish 112

depending on what length your comfortable on I say go 184 or size up to the 190 if you’re good on larger skis.

all three skis will perform great all over the mountain. Will handle any snow you get out west as well.

if you’ve only been skiing for 2 seasons don’t buy any of those skis previously mentioned, you could look into the Nordica unleashed, very good all mountain ski, super good for progression

Lmao. Because he’s been skiing two seasons he can’t ski moments? Lmao. You’re funny bro.

wildcat 108 is a great ski for just about anyone. Clearly you’ve never skied them.

deathwish is also a friendly ski as well for someone who’s been skiing two season.

Countach could be challenging that’s why I asked what his style is.

All are to wide for now. you don’t want someone learning on something that wide.

Lmao. Literally have no clue what you’re talking about. A 108 is not too wide to be skiing on the west coast after 2 seasons. Hell I was skiing the wildcat 108 as my main ski first time back on skis since I was 8.

again tell us you’ve never been on a wildcat 108 without telling us you’ve never been on a wildcat 108.

someone his size and weight is perfect for that ski. If anything he could stay at the 184 and be all good.

if YOURE too timid to ski a 108 that’s something else. That’s your issue.

Wait you ski WI? And you’re trying to say 108 is too wide for the west coast for someone going on their 3rd season? Cringe

wow, i didn’t realize you would take that as a personal offense. while learning to ski can be done on a wider ski it isn't recommended. it’s way easier to progress on a skinnier, more maneuverable ski. not sure how that’s debatable. a third year skier isn’t exactly a powder hunter. you would never recommended a beginner like this to buy a 108 or bigger if you didn’t dick ride moment, other ski brands exists.

I do not have a particular style of ski that I like, as I have not tried out many different types of skis. I had previously been using skis that were much too small for me, that were 166cm, which was what the resort I go to was giving me. I used those skis until I started doing research into buying skis and ski sizing. Even though I know short skis are given to beginners I think I surpassed that point because I can comfortably hit all the jumps at the park and go down all of the black diamond runs comfortably. I will check out the skis you suggested.

You can remove moment from the entire equation. My point is about someone on the west coast riding their third year on a 108 ish ski. There is absolutely no reason someone cannot do that and progress. You can say the unleashed 108 if that tickles your dick better.

Beginner like what? If he’s been skiing for 2 seasons in the west coast he isn’t a beginner. On top of that the terrain, mountains and type of snow you get on the west coast is ideal for a 108ish ski since it lets a growing skier explore more conditions and more of the mountain. If he’s on some sub 100 ski he ain’t getting to explore any kind of fresh semi deep snow.

there’s a reason so many companies make 106-108ish skis that are used out west.

i don’t disagree with you but i still think it’s a factual statement that something in the 90-100 range would suit his progression better. it’s gana be easier to dial in short turns and carving with a skinnier ski. a third year skier really should be focusing on form and technique in order to progress to a level where they can comfortably free ride and venture off piste. i’d say this man likely isn’t super comfortable short turning through the trees and is likely only carving with low to medium edge angle and has little leg angulation in all types of turns. that’s a pretty common sport for 3rd year skiers to be in but sir please correct me if i’m wrong about your abilities. a skinnier ski will not hinder him in 97% of situations that he will be facing. a skinnier ski is absolutely the move for a third year skier who needs a one ski quiver. and i’m saying like 92-100 under foot range which actually isn’t skinny at all.

I also have a friend who has a pair of 2022 Black Crow Justis that are 189 cm in length and are 100m in waist width, that he would sell to me for $200 that are in pretty good condition.

if you can cop those for $200 with bindings I'd definitely do that, assuming there isn't any major damage

I wouldn't recommend dropping $600-800 on skis until you truly know what you like though. Find a demo day or find a shop that has a rental fleet and try out different skis. I'm sure you can easily find a demo day or something out west. Try different widths and shapes and see what you like best. There's nothing worse than dropping $800 on a set of sticks just to find out you hate them.

Would these skis be around the right size that I need for what I'm doing? I was planning on getting something from the low to mid 100mm.

Where exactly are you skiing mostly?
https://www.corbetts.com/2023-salomon-stance-96-skis/

Something like that, also comes in 102mm width, or the maverick you linked above is a great place to start.

What skis have you been on as rentals? Have you had anything you liked as "performance package" rentals or just the regular crap?

Liberty Origin 96 or 106 could be a good option, Deathwish 104 was a good recommendation too, I have the DW 112 and it's so intuitive and fun to ski. The cool thing about Moment is they have a progressive sidecut where if you aren't on edge too aggressively the ski feels playful and easy to pivot, while the more performance you introduce, the more the ski grips.

Imagine getting enraged because someone supports an American ski company who actually makes their own skis in house in the states.

and then imagine continuing bitching when you’ve never even skied a pair in your life. Lmao. Trolls gonna troll

Skied deathwishes yesterday. By YOUR suggestion. They were mid. I respect Moment and their commitment to making sustainable stuff in the U.S but your meatriding has gotten ridiculous.

Something in the Line Sick Day or Elan Ripstick families would be pretty good for you. I've had a few friends in each of those as their first "real" pair of skis and they've all been very satisfied

They both come in multiple widths too

Line doesn't make the sick day anymore

Oh, that's weird. They still make the pandora which I'm pretty sure comes from the same mold. I guess the Vision has replaced the Sick Day in the lineup

I think the blade optic is probably a closer ski to fill that dad ski slot for them?
