Looking for a DSLR camera

Right now I'm tempted to go for a Nikon D60 because the D40 will need to be replaced within a year or two of use + the D40 Is almost non-existant anymore or at least it will be soon.

so much great info on here I'm going to have to throw this on mythreads as I'm planning on buying a dslr by the end of the summer myself.

thank you to everyone who dropped input! and thank you to the thread creator for making this thread so I didn't have to!

This is such a huge amount of helpful info. I've been looking into buying a DLSR camera for a trip to australia this summer, and haven't been able to pinpoint what i've been looking for. I just bought a Nikon d70

just wait for the T1i, same price as the xsi but it's got 3 more mp, 1080 and 720 hd movie mode... pretty big step forward (still shoots 3.5fps, which isn't fast but it's a whole frame fasted than the nikon d40)

*I NEED HELP ALSO*

I have some experience with film and darkroom photography but this would be my first time with a dslr. I currently have a click and shoot camera. In addition i have a lower (at most $400) price range.

It is kind of the same as him i guess.

he means point and shoot, any one with half a mind would be able to figure that out. point and shoot means digital compact if you've never been around a camera before.

Yes thank you captain obvious. I know what it means and what he meant by it. I can figure that out for myself. I've got about 4 point shoots, 3 dslr's, lost count how many slr's I have, 2 medium formats (one being a tlr) and a partridge in a pear tree. I've had my own Photography business for about 10 years now. I think I've been around cameras for a while. I've just never heard it referred to that way before.

oh i'm maybe too late but, just so you know, i think your better to invest your cash in good/popular brands like canon or nikon just because if you really like it and get really good at it you will have more choices in lens or bodys or anything with those brands... so thats why i see it like an investement for life.

you have a d60 and you claim to know which lenses are better then others, okay bud. someone who knows which lenses are better then others would have gotten a d80/d90. (af motor in body fyi)

and no nikon lenses are not better then the rest, canon pentax and sony (one or two of them only) are equal to nikon lenses.

then you have it set up wrong and you dont know how to use it, also yes half the time mf is better, but af is nice to have.
