Looking to get into it. I was wondering if you think that boots with a walk mode are a necessity or if I could bum it with my normal boots (Atomic hawk 80s)?

I am just looking to see if I like it, maybe take a few trips up hogs back on hood.

Unless you found a smokin deal on some touring boots that fit you perfectly (highly unlikely), you should just try it out before you put any money into it. The most important thing is to have boots that fit you comfortably for both the up and down portions of the day. I ski with people that use alpine boots and are just fine during the day.

That said, there are quite a few boots on the market now that have a nice walk mode and swappable soles for both alpine and tech bindings (the Technica Cochise boot family immediately comes to mind). If you're in the market for new ski boots anyways, you should look at all those 'hybrid' boots and see which ones fit the best. They'll work great, provided they fit well, even if you don't end up touring much.

It's really not too hard to just boot pack up to crater rock or illumination rock. Especially if you ride the lift to the top of the mile and start hiking from there. I hike it in regular alpine boots. My wife has some new Lange boots with a hike mode and it really doesn't seem to make much difference for her. I used to think I wanted boots with a hike mode but now I think it might be just another thing I don't need to worry about.

I do majority of my touring in full tilts, with out issue. I've been out in dynafit set ups but the investment is steep when majority of the tours I do are so short. There's several places here in Salt Lake that rent touring gear, so I'd ask around you to see if there's anywhere that does.
