T T*Maki Member Feb 19, 2007 #8 Lifts your boot a bit higher off the ski, allowing you to put more leverage onto the edge, thus carve turns easier. Prevents booting out when turning, etc... You can go on and on with what they do, but long story short makes carving easier.
