Longterm physical problems

hey all, first off, i just turned 20, so i guess that i am older than you!

so i wouldnt say my bodys beaten up after a few years of skiing, of which around 3~4 were park/pow skiing only, but i can feel some parts not "feeling normal" if you wanna call it that way.

its not that, as i said, i am totally done, but i would like to know how you see freeskiings longterm consequences in general? how will our knees, hips and ankles look like in 40 years?

imo, we all should concentrate more on other sports to get good physics and coordination skills, so your body is prepared and your mind is better prepared if somethings going wrong. as well as doing a little bit of stretching prior to every run, which is what i found out is def. helping a lot.

ummm wat??

of course our body will be messed up...

were sliding metal rails, and flying 60ft through the air...

but anyways

yea i understand what your sayin...and everyone def. needs to stretch

well, i hate to be a negative nancy, but i do think that many of us in this extreme sport generation (im 22), will have re occuring problems as we get older. i work in a hospital as well as EMS and i see too many older people with issues, many of whom lived healthy lives. however, there is nothing to compare to the trauma of jumping on skis, crashing a mountain bike, etc. even though most of us dont feel it too much now, it does catch up.
i myself have separated an AC joint, broken my back (about as minorly as you can), hurt a knee, and generally ache. unfortunately, joint problems will come back to bite you in the ass. my back hurts when i work, my shoulder hurts when i exercise, i cant run anymore because of my knee (i used to run distance in high school so thats quite a change for me).
spark notes? whether young people think so or not, you start hurting at an early age. add in skiing and other high impact sports, and we better pray that they come up with some orthopedic miracles in the next 20 years.
or my shoulder is frozen, i will be wheelchair bound by my back, and i will need a knee replacement.
haha.
*dont rule out the benefits of training and good health though. that can make all the difference.

IM ALREADY BOUND TO HAVE ARTHRITUS WHEN I GET OLDER

oh shit caps my kitty was laying on the keyboard, i have surgery on my foot so i am guna have arthritus when i get older.

I've been skiing for the last 21 years (I'm 27) with 10 of those years having over 120 days on snow.

Stretch, go to the gym, and eat well. Continuous exercise and eating well have been huge helps.

i had a lot of surgeries from when i was 18-21. and now a couple years later i've finally realized there's no way in hell ill ever get my body back to feeling 100%. ever. i think ill be starting to do yoga this year. im tired of being sore all the time.

I've broken my back 3 times in 3 different places in 3 separate accidents. Have two fused vertebrae a plate & 5 screws. Separated both shoulders, blown out my left ACL/MCL had it re-constructed, and a few too many concussions. Skiing is an addiction, albeit I'm 25 now and i'm going to have to start choosing my days.

I'm thinking of getting into a safer sport like skydiving.

I believe in quality of life over quantity. Wasting away in a nursing home was is not my idea of what life was meant to be.

Nothing is better than adrenaline seeking behavior.

Staying fit is a big part of it. Not being over weight and remaining flexible. Having a solid regiment of yoga/corestrength, tied in with regular massage, and chiropractry visits will do wonders.

Along with properly rehabbing your sports injuries with an sports physiotherapist before going out and doing it again. Prevention of re-occuring injuries is the key to longevity in high impact sports.

I skied moguls competitively for about 10 years and played football for about 12 (in high school i had 2 seasons a year, rep and the high school season). I never really began any form of training until I was 18 (which happens to be the same season I tore my ACL playing football), and just relied on my natural athletic abilities. As you can imagine, skiing moguls and playing football puts tremendous strain on your knees and lower back (ESPECIALLY if you are 6'6" like me....). Being 21 now, I train my ass off, eat smart, and stretch like a gymnast, and I'm progressing more than ever on this hill.

In short: smart training, eating, and stretching is your friend

Arthritis blows, as a kid I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in my ankles and knees, mainly occurring in my joints and there were times when it would flare up and I couldn't walk and shit... Ibuprofen helps me out a lot, I currently do not have it (it stopped during my early teenage years), but it sometimes flares up randomly (in cold weather esp. but it isn't common it happens a couple times a year) But I'm pretty sure since I had it as a little kid I'm bound to have it come back when I'm older, which sucks.

so its nice to see, that a few people are older than i am. and the same way i appreciate that some people actually prepare theirselves for the impacts/are conscious about the consequences it may have.

cuz a lot of (especially around the age of 16) kids seem to be happy/proud if they can tell you that they have aches whenever they do this or that or whatever. its so dumb to think that your body isnt telling you something with pain or to think that youre only as good a skier as how painful your ride is.

is just hope that were not doing something to our bodies that we cant control in 30 years or so. yeah, you might think now (if youre under 18, i would say), "i am cool, no matter whats in the future", but believe me, the first time you got to sign an insurance contract for things like accidental death, paralyzation, your world is another one

I currently have 2 foot probelms icelands and severs and i have pitella displacement (kneecap runs on the inside of my knee) and so it hurts like shit to run.

Dude theres this guy at my mountain that destroys the park. Hes 50 and does tons of flips and last weekend was working on 4 out of this rail cause he already had both 2s out. Oh yea and he also was macking on some like 20 year old chicks. Stop worrying about how fucked your knees will be in the future. I cant imagine giving up the sport I love so my body wont get hurt. Even if your not into as much as me like are u seriously saying that the risks of having fun are out weighed by the chance of getting hurt?

all sports have wear and tear the key is getting into a regular stretching program, do some cardio and weights in the off season and you'll have a much longer painless skiing career

I'm 21 and so far only my knees are done in (although nothing torn or anything). Just have really short hamstrings which I now stretch of before going skiing - although they are a lot better than before but 15+ years of Rugby didn't really help them (and of course the skiing as well). Now I row (crew) which takes a lot of the stress of my knees (but puts it on in different places) but because of all the training my knees feel better than ever so I just have to wait and see how the hold up skiing (if Scotland ever gets some snow this year/I get a ski holiday).

In short I would agree with everything said here. Exercise, stretch and eat well (and a little luck too)...

coming from one of the brainchilds of our sport cr johnson.

'The joy i get out of skiing is worth risking my life for"

I personally will not give up this sport til both of my legs are amputated and cant use one of those sit down chairs.

my grampa is 82 and he skis six days a week better than 80 percent of the people on the slopes

I’m 21 and fucked. Never broken anything but have ate a lot of shit. Body feels like it’s falling apart.

i don’t give a fuck though, if it’s what you love the impacts later are worth it. Send it while you still can

My advice for longevity is: don’t drink lots of alcohol! It prevents recovery (look into protein synthesis and no this ain’t some hippy pseudoscience shit.)

eat super healthy

and warm up before sending it, I ski groomers for like an hour and gradually roll into the day.
