remember, when it says nov 4th those are the numbers as of 4:00pm nov 3rd, and nov 5th are the numbers as of 4:00pm nov 4th.

What he is implying is that the day after the election, the stock market dropped.

But it is a stupid to argue because the stock market has been dropping for the past month and a half.

yeah. and plus even if it did drop after the election, that has nothing to do with the election. nobody that got elected has been sworn in yet, so they dont have any power

market downturns are driven by fear. obviously traders on wall street fear something about the upcoming presidency.

I mean its hard to avoid. October 26th was the first real implementation of the TARP and whaddya know, stocks increase. The 4th was when obama was elected and whaddya know, the stocks decrease.

Its a pretty drastic change of direction to say the least and its not a coincidence how precisely it happened...

OOOORR:

people bought on the word and sold on the reality. (people bought before obama was elected and sold when he was elected to make money as they predicted more would buy on election day)

ORRRRRRRR:

AS ALMOST EVERYONE AGREES, wall street traders looking down the barrel at an already risky economy, are fearful of the taxes obama will impose on specifically financial markets and the wealthy.

Here, I've illustrated what wall street is fearful of in a simple to read diagram:

have you ever read Joseph Schumpeter on capitalsim, socialism, and democracy? perhaps give your perspective an even keel?

you really are infatuated with capitalism and can't imagine benefits of a socialistic society can you.

when a socials society succeeds and excels and quality of life measured in purchasing power, available health care, education, and life expectancy, in a socialist society exceeds that of the USA, i will consider it.

but that is a discussion for another time. right now ppl are losing their homes and the last thing we need is a radical left winger.

You and i both know i can't stand toe to toe with you on economic matters, how the numbers play out, etc.

But i'm going to call you out on saying that we have this overwhelmingly high quality of life. For a slim majority it's true that they receive the best health care, best education, highest life expectancy and so forth but you're shitting yourself if you believe the US is providing the best for the most.

but the fact that bill gates is a billionaire and a product of the american capitalism, imo, does not outweigh the 30K people living in East St. Louis.

just because we have the Mayo Clinic in FL does not exscuse the fact that we rank 29th globaly on infant mortality rates -- just below Slovakia (while Sweden, Norway, and Finland rank 4th, 5th,and 6th respectivly)

Just because we have some of the best private institutions of education hasn't put the US at the top of the international charts.

from oecd.com -- The United States has one of the highest levels of inequality with the

average earnings of the richest 10 % of the population 16 times higher

than the poorest 10 percent. The gap between rich and poor in the US

has also widened more rapidly than in most other countries over the

past 20 years.

this is not something to brag about, what about those socialist countries?

again -- In Denmark and Sweden the gap is narrower with the richest 10% earning on average less than five times the poorest.

Perhaps i don't know the answer to how to solve this, that's something you get to come up with, but i do think it's pretty easy to see that with the exception of the top minority, we're not doing as well as you purport. Perhaps we need an adjust where we make our measurements. It's too easy to just take a reading off the top and say "look we're the best" when the whole subjacent layers are strugling. And i've got to say if you're suggesting that the recent past is the model for success, unless you've redefined success for those lucky few, i'm a skeptic despite my lack of knowledge in economics.

Guys pleas ei seriously doubt anyone in this thread, or even on ns has the expertise, experience, or knowledge to do any in depth marked analysis. There are so many things that affect our market there is no way you can blame ONE thing for it.

Secondly how are you talking shit about obama? he has not made one policy decision, have you not heard of the lame duck president? the prez. leaving office of an opposing party always tries to leave a mess behind. come on guys

FUCK Ya!

o where the world would be without these things, and that goes for EVERYONE, dirt poor, to super wealthy.

o for all the Sweden and Norway dick suckers, how's their army, navy, and air force? like it or not, a strong military is a necessary evil for the US.

if you want an idea on how to close the income gap how about this. when you cut taxes government actually takes in more money, so then you can spread that wealth baby! if you want fancy little graphs i can give them to you about how cutting taxes makes the economy chrun creating MORE middle class jobs, making the rich richer, and the middle class richer. its a win win!

and you account for the past 20 years how? of the past 20 years 8 have been years in which we raised taxes.

sorry i don't buy your graphs or your explanation.

and furthermore, all those technologies Ju listed don't mean shit to me, when we've got enough room on the planet for each person to consume 1.8 hectacres of land, and the USA is living at around 9 - 11 hectacres per capita, you're not only fucked, it's unethical.

You guys have such a warped sense of reality, when you caught up all in your macro-micro economic text books you loose the idea that we (industrialized nations) are responsible for the fact that 1/2 the world lives on less than $1 a day.

You know whats even a bigger kicker, your bullshit list of wonders still doesn't produce a happy or healthy nation. 1 out of ever 4 american is suffering from a mental disorder, 1 : 18 suffer from major depressive disorder...and i guess Ju isnt too worried but white males are the most apt to commit suicide. Sounds awesome.

Do you want to tell me where you might find some of the happiest people on earth? 60 minutes said Denmark. go figure.

^haha that was great.

this thread is pointless.

i've been watching the DOW jump up and down

for two years now, often on a much larger scale than the one pointed

out in the original post, and often in less than a day. the election

did not impact the market on that scale, maybe it contributed a tiny

bit, but the DOW fluctuations have a lot more to do with economics than

politics. people should learn to understand things before they pretend to be concerned about them.

i appreciate the hipocrasy of P-face posting that video on gov't spending, when obama loves pork barrel spending and is all for increasing the federal govt.

im with you ju, the market fell apart because of fear of what obama would do, the liberal media refuses to report it though, its so biased its insane

how the fuck does me simply posting an onion video relevant to the thread make me a hypocrite? I'd appreciate it if you dropped the personal attack.

dude, the numbers dont lie, when Bush (the war mongering bastard that he is,) cut the Cap gains tax government took in 2 TIMES the amount of money, hey baby lets spread that wealth!

hmmmm so America is the problem when it comes to people living in poverty, yeas, ill give you that, only some though. lets also look at it from the point of American innovation has given these people advantages as well. the car, whoa now, there's a biggie. (perfected in america) if america sucks balls so bad then why the hell are people floating in inner tubes across parts of teh ocean to get here?

serisously what has Sweden or Norway done to change the world for the better? on a grand scale like the US? besides hot girls in Ikea

(they have one here in MN and it kicks ass ;) right next to that decadent shrine of capitalism known as the Mall of America. that doesnt provide for one job, and only does bad stuff.

hahaha shit, nvm. you win.

realistically isnt the JOI something you should be against? afterall all that money could have gone towards a homeless shelter.

yeah, JOI>airplane, computer, the list goes on. lol

Hey jumister, it's really too bad we didn't privatize social security right? Since you're all for the "free market" I'm sure you were all about that. Conservative ideals would probably be really popular right now if everyone in the country watched all of their retirement disappear.

P.S. congratulations on following the dow daily, I don't give a fuck. Most intelligent liberals are more concerned about long term security than how to make as much money as possible in the next decade or two.

ACTUALLY, imagine if your parents were able to save that 7% they pay into social security, not shitting you i bet my dad would be retired.

but seriously IMO a community of respect and a community of support is much more of an accomplishment than technological advancements. Technology benefits only a few, and has a pretty lopsided cost benefit ratio -- those who own the tech get most of the benefits while those who buy/make the tech get the short end of the stick. In a community where you're getting as much support as you give it's a much more equal, and happy society.

I can't really get a good argument here because what i talk about has become pretty much fantasy at this point. No one would want to give up their technology, despite it actually being dangerous/harmful to us, it's just that it's something we're addicted to, and now dependent on. There's a fundamental resource limit that capitalism ignores, i don't want to suggest that i have the correct model to replace capitalism , but, when you change your resources from materials to communal support you lose that limitation.

dude, dont you get it? THE WORLD, (thats right, the whole god dam world) has benefited in some way or another from american ingenuity. what drives that ingenuity?

shit look at teh number of diseases that have been completly whiped off the face of the earth, but no, stuff like this is over looked.

your idea of benefit is drastically different from mine, we use to have a pretty robust immune system and the capability to evolve, but now we're so dependent on technology to save us.

Trust me I do take our accomplishments into account, i just don't think they are anywhere near enough to outweigh the negative consequences.

i doubt you'd enjoy it much, but see if you can find Daniel Quinn's Ishmael, pretty perspective changing novel, it's not just America that has this problem, it's the whole agricultural revolution that's behind mass starvation and poverty.

seriously? who grows the food then? or do we go back to the days of grow just enough to eek out enough food for your family and hope you make it through the winter / rainy season.

specialization, FTW.

your right though, the way i live and the way i want to live is pretty contradictory

let's just say at this point i don't have much of an option, if i don't play the game, i don't eat. But it's also the problem that i don't think i can just ignore how everyone else has chosen to live and content myself with removing the dissonance in my life, it's such a interconnected world, what you do effects me, what i do effects you. There really is no isolation.

I've got to make my way through this mode before i find the path i'd be content with, but this doesn't mean i can't know what i'm looking for.

it is possible to life a life pretty removed from the ways of this world if you really want to.... not saying its bad in any way.

well considering we're the only animals that need to 'grow our food' 'protect our food' it's against common experience that this really is 'ftw'

the analogy i like from that book is a flying machine,

many a man tried to invent the machine which could give man flight by his own power, the inventor would build his machine and begin to pedal it off the cliff, and for a short while he would think "I am flying!" when in fact he was just experiencing free fall. As he began to realize that the earth was towards him much too quickly, he pedaled harder and harder but it doesn't matter how hard you pedal, if your machine is doomed from the beginning, you're going to crash anyways.

(now please excuse the fact that we have the plastic ultralight pedal power airplane, as i think if you want to accept it into the analogy it equates to the fact that it is possible but requires such a ridiculous amount of resources, it still isn't possible)

look around you, notice the ridiculous levels of poverty, note the mass extinction of species that is happening, it is all directly related to our presence and our style of life, which we've been living for the past 4,000 years. Our problem is that we don't live long enough to realize that we're just experiencing free fall and that the canyon floor is rushing up towards us. Eventually we'll crash no matter how hard we pedal our machine, unless we abandon it.

That's what i'm looking for.

if you artificially pump up the system to believe that each person is entitled to the resources of 9, 12, 15 earths, you're bound for a crash arent you? I wouldn't say that's something i'm advocating, i'm just saying that's the consequence we're facing.

every other species goes through population fluctuation, we've just starved off the inevitable haven't we? Now we get to face the reality of things, we can't continue to grow indefinitely.
