Local Shops ski test results...

Sup guys..

I manage a local shop in California, and this season me and about 6 of the other guys in the store convinced the owner we needed to really get into newschool skiing (he is kinda old fashioned, and all we had was a couple of pairs of old head madtrix in there up to this point). So... we had him buy 2 to 3 pairs of 6 ski brands.... Line, Armada, 4frnt, Salomon, Rossignol, Head, so that we could test which brands we wanted to carry for next season.

As the season is winding down here, I am comfortable calling this a full season of use. Anywho... each pair of ski had a rider of decent skill... hitting rails, doing pretty big airs and taking some good spills, on them for roughly 2 days a week. We would alternate skis as much as possible, because we wanted to see the damage each ski took, and also.. because it was sick to test out all of them. We each ski like 4 - 5 days a week, and at least 2 of those we had on a set of test skis, and they were never the same ski twice in a week. Here's what we found....

Line ( Skogen, 1260, EP pro) - These skis were sweet, I and a couple of others ride lines as our own skis, and they were a great all around ski, they didn't really seem to have a super high point, or a low point. The 1260's ripped in the pipe, skogens were just solid skis, and EP was crazy nice for landing switch. As far as durability, we were getting some delamming under the boots where we had cracked some edges that was kind of a pain as there was now water getting into the base, but ... we only actually blew out edges on the skogens, and that was because one of them tried disastering a flat down flat and caught a broken edge on the kink. So overall, Line's were a solid purchase, gonna be good for someone who likes all mountain riding without neccesarily having a specific focus in their skiing. Top pick for 2 of our riders.

Armada (ARV) - We had 2 sets of Armadas, and that is important. The one set, got absolutely beat to hell on the top sheet, granted that doesn't matter, but I know that skis take beatings, but these looked trashed. Maybe it was the color, but they got fucked on the top. We blew out an edge on one set, but had a lot of cracked edges on both skis, including some up in the nose from nose-sliding, which really didn't happen often. They were great in pow, and had a nice flex for landing switch. It was a great ski in the park and for big mountain, but the durability was suspect although Tyson has apparently taken steps to improve that. So good ride, just a little too fragile for every day riding. Top pick for 1 rider.

4Frnt (MSP) - The MSP's were the second most durable ski's we tested, They really didn't show too much damage considering. So for longevity they were banging. For riding , I liked them for rails and backcountry, but I personally found that on big airs ( 40 ft kickers and above) that they have sort of a slap to the landing, and I had problems landing big switch tricks, but... that wasn't the case for everyone who tried them out with us, so perhaps that was an isolated incident. They were the top pick for 2 of our constant testers.

Salomon (1080) - The wide base was nice, but we actually broke one of our 3 pairs. We snapped the tail off, that was a bad sign, and it wasn't on a grossly mislanded trick, just landed backseat, and it got rocked. Durability was ok other than that, thought they were maybe a little heavy. (All skis were mounted with the same bindings by the way all were center mounted) But overall I liked the ski, but when it got snapped so easy it makes me believe the core in them is pretty sketchy. Not recommended for anyone who will be putting a lot of stress on their skis.

Rossignol (Scratch FS) - Great all mountain ski, was quite durable, had was good on all aspects, I really liked their flex for landing switch and thought the base width was perfect for hitting rounded rails. Didn't see any glaring problems, had a lot of base damage on one set, although that may have been simply rider caused, and hell there is always P-Tex and epoxy. Seemed to be a good all around ski comprable to the Line skis we tested, although we chose the lines over the Rossi's simply because Line is a core company, but it was a very nice ski. Top pick of one rider.

Head (MadTrix) - as you have read on here... these things are fucking bomb proof. I swear to god, I was actually sitting there in the shop with a screwdriver trying to scratch the top sheet, and it just wasn't happening. They were great on rails. Only broke it in a couple of places, and had no blow outs. VERY VERY Little base damage. I liked them, they had sort of a soft flex i guess. which made pipe a little bit difficult, but not really a problem. GREAT GREAT every day ski, because it can take a beating... perfect for the mid skill rider who is gonna take some beatings on rails and hits but needs his ski to take that without breaking so he can continue to progress. Decent ski-ability, excellent durability. Top pick of 1 rider.

That's what we found out... hope that helps with some ski purchase questions, or just as a little information about what we found in our very unscientific test.

O yeah there were reasons we didn't test K2's, Dynastars, Atomics, ETC... but it was not due to lack of confidence in the ski. In fact K2's owned by a couple of shop riders are their favorite skis, but they just couldn't be included for one reason or another, just f.y.i.

wow that was amazing it tells me alot ..i have a frend who talks shit about line all the time cuz he rides atomic race skis and he hears about some problems with them and he thinks they are shit. but any skis that really takes a beating like hits jumps and stuff will break at some time even if they are the durable mojo's.

This is so great, i just got new skis but im sure this would be perfect for everyone worndering about what ski to get, thanks again.....

Freezy... this is the reason.

Dynastar - we have never had contact with and I didn't feel it was neccessary as many reviews on here seem to say that they make a good race ski, but they have terrible durability problems. So I did not think it was worth it to go through the hassle of creating an account for the shop and getting a rep to try a ski that has already gotten such bad reviews that would still cost us roughly $400 to be involved in the test.

Atomics - We stock a lot of atomics, and their boards. However we usually only by Atomic race skis that we stock often as demo skis. Also, my boss and a few of the racer kids use our Pro deals (Pro deals are a special, better than wholesale price given to shops on a few pairs of skis per year so that they can promote and test equip.) to get themselves some of the great skis Atomic has to offer for racers. Thus we had no pro deals left, and to go back and do a wholesale purchase for 2 or 3 sets of Atomic Tweaks was going to be a hassle neither the owner nor I wanted to go through. It will be in our test for next year, as we have pre arranged that with our rep. However.... a review for the Tweaks that I have ridden (Although not under the same conditions as this test was in) have been good skis. I found them to have a little too much slap for my like, possibly from the flex. However, it would also be a good ski for park and groomers, although I would not recommend them for Powder, depending on your skill level. And I cannot comment on Durability because they did not go through the same test conditions.

K2 - Although K2 makes a great ski, they were not included in the test because of personal problems with our local K2 rep. It is so hard to contact him, and even harder to get a response. So much so , that a few guys who work for us, end up just buying their K2's through getboards at a retail price because it is that much of an ordeal to contact this guy. So I know that many love their public enemies, and Pistols...and I cannot comment one way or another on them, and would feel wrong in doing so without ridding them, let alone testing them out properly.

So as much as I would have liked to have covered most if not all of the major brands, that was not in the cards this year. Maybe next year we can get like 25 sets of skis to test... (drool)...

Hope that answers their questions...

Thanks for the info. That is exactly the kind of reviews this site needs. I am sick of the 'My public enemeys kick ass' or 'Line is terrible'.

As for your testing, your shop owner sounds like an awesome boss...something this sport needs.

Next year you guys should take before and after pics and put together a complete 'booklet' about your tests. If you did it right, you might even be able to convince a skiing magazine to publish and/or help fund it. Just an idea.

Nice... the pictures were a thought, but the camera one of the guys just bought for filming turned out to be much harder to use.. so we scrapped that. But we are looking on ways to improve that aspect.

Also the Skogens were the 04's.

Still a sick ski.. but I can only see improvements in the future, and like i said I can't wait to see the update...

hey good job! finally someone does an actual review of a handful of skis instead of coming on here saying ''well these skis have the coolest graphics so they are the best skis in the world and they're super bomb-proof and they ski great and i've never actually seen a pair in real life.'' i was actually gonna make a thread asking people if there was a review like this in any newschool mags so thanks for freeing up some spare time for me now that i don't have to

and 4frnts definitely are the best all mountain/park skis

madtrix are not flexiable at all compared to lines, or other twins are you sure you tested these skis, and where comparing the flex to twin tip skis

very nice job on this, sounds like you guys got it all together. you should definately post all of your info as an article, because that needs to be done. there are too maybe threads like 'shold i get pes they look col' or 'i HaTe line'

publicenemy270: matty i love you

yeah i basically did the same thing you guys did with my shop but i tested some different skis, i thought the mad trix were actually really stiff, but maybe thats cause im a pretty light guy

he has the durability of the mad-trix correct, but they donot flex easily.

If you want a bulit proof ski then get the mad-tr....not on second thought just buy 4frnts, built proof and they flex better.

If we(skiers) are trying to copy snowboarders so badly, why then do we have two sticks under our feet when they only have one?

Hey Steeze, where is your shop. I am down in LA for school and I have no idea where to go to get ski stuff. Any possibility of clearing out these skis really cheap?

Thanks

Our shop is probably moving to a larger location in Big Bear City, and when i have that current information.. I will for sure post it.

In response to the Mad- trix question.

I have been informed that the way i had the ski mounted, I.E. which end forward may have played a part in that. And no i was not saying it was a noodle, and a lot of the guys in the shop had trouble bending it. However, I am 6'2'' 185, and I ski pipe very very aggressively, and I felt like I was bowing the ski as I started up the wall. That is not to say that it was bad... it was just a little difficult for me, but who knows. On the jumps I loved their flex, they weren't so stiff that I got a ton of slap with big air, and I absolutely loved them for landing switch. So, there a positives and negatives, as with every ski. I'm not calling your skis bad guys.. just calm down a sec.. lol... it is just how i and a few of the others felt on the skis. Still an amazing ski, and I highly recommend it, but I can only call it how i see it.... hope that is a little bit of a clarification. And if you see it differently please comment on what we may have done to get these results, because your input will only help us with testing out next years...

Also thank you very much for your kind words about the review, we had a great time doing it, and it is nice that our 'hard work' :) , was appreciated.

In response to the article, I was considering after next year I would do that, when I could make comments on improvements in the models from year to year... but we will see.

Thank you again, sorry for any confusion on the MadTrix.

On the EP pros. What I loved about them was that they were 186's, and I think the extra length over the skogens, and just a stich over the 1260's is nice. They have a nice wide base like the rest of the lines, and they had great pop. They flexed just right in my opinion. They seemed to have a little more of a backcountry feel than the 1260's to me. Like they were just a little heavier. It made me feel more confident taking big mountain lines with them than I would on the 1260. But the diff between the 1260 adn the EP pro would be, that the 1260 is a great ski that you can use anywhere, but really specializes in park. And the EP was a great ski as well that had the extra length and that extra solid feel for doing back country newschooling. Enjoy.

Oo.. also I found the EP pros to be very similar to the Skogans if you are a little shorter, but they seemed to be a very similar ski.

what would be better for all mountain (alot of park- snowdome.. gr, then piste and a bit of off piste for when i spend next season in france) the 1260 for £190 or the scratch fs for £220 (without bindings) www.xe.com for currency conversion.

oh and POSSIBLY some:

K2 Public enemy 180cm + Marker M1400 Comp Binding for £250, but depends as its ebay and the item has just gone but noone bought it (mite come back on)

cheers,

dom

Yo Dom, where you getting the 1260s for 190? I paid 250 for my darksides and that was 50 quid off!? You ride for LINE UK?

********

I Like To Ski

Yea man, Line is good stuff. Email Line UK if you've got any questions, matt's only happy to answer any questions and stuff. PM me if you've got any queries to. And out of the two I'd take the 1260s in a shot! Seriously.

********

I Like To Ski

I would take the Line's over the Scratch FS's... Although I think the K2's might be a little better in the Powder... but of those two.. definitly the 1260.

J - Irv

Good on you mate for taking the time to give out some quality information. Also good to see that it is not bias.

You didn't read all of the post, he explains why there is no k2. by the3 way...are these reviews on the 2004's or the 2005's?

better to burn out...

...then fade away

Best all-mountain ski was the Line 1260??? Are you on crazy pills? Even Line says that it is a park specific ski. Even the Skogan which is Line's 'all-mountain model' is a park specific ski compared to Heads or Armadas.

nice job on the reviews, sounds like you have a fun job.

I'm wondering how you arrived at the 1260 being the best all mountain as well. When I rode them they felt very unstable and squirly. They're a little skinny compared to most new skis too.

hi

what about MadTrix for all-mountain?

i need twintip universal ski and here(czech rep) I cen get only PE or Head MadTrix.

thanks

good, unbiased review.

if anyone would like to demo lines, k2s, armadas, or libertys as well as the line binding come visit jibij pro-shop next year in boulder. we'll also try and put something together at the end of next year regarding durability with the demo skis and put it up here on ns.com.
