LJ Strenio Got Robbed Of X-Games Gold

regardless of results, i'm wondering what type of skiing xgames realski aims to showcase. Are edits judged more on tech and difficulty or progressiveness and creativity? and what does that suggest about the way skiing is shifting? IN MY OPINION, I believe LJ had an impressive mix of fucked tech tricks and creativity and deserved the win. Seems as if the general ski community who viewed the edits and the NS community would agree. However, the (6?) judges cast Magnus as the winner. I just wanna know what the aspects and degrees of those aspects the judges based their opinion on.

Also, I believe the fan favorite winner is more impressive than the judges final vote because it better represents the ski community than some judges in a room do.

I feel like a broken record quoting and linking my article so much, but it keep coming up over and over again.

Ahmet explained his criteria in ranking this year’s Real Street competitors, Magnus Graner, Tom Wallisch, LJ Strenio, Khai Krepela, Henrik Harlaut, and Will Wesson. “Creativity- use of the environment around you. Technicality, obviously. Style- wasn’t necessarily on the criteria, but it plays deeply into it. Style is being about, to me, composure. I don’t think it’s subjective. The reason style isn’t in the criteria is because it can be seen as subjective. But to me, the composure of the skier, the way he looks when doing it, has got to be a part of it.“

Honestly this is a never ending debate in subjectively judged action sports going back 40 years or more.

These are opinions and clearly there is a strong divide along the two contrasting styles. At the end of the day I respect the fuck out of LJs segment and consider it one of, if not the heaviest urban parts of all time. If you saw the same thing, and somehow rationalize Magnus winning then you need to rethink how a competition is won. If you didn't see the same thing, then I definitely can't agree with you, but thats OK because no matter how much evidence there is in either direction, it will be a subjective matter.

I'm not quoting your whole post to save on thread space but I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I agree that this thread in general attests to the divisiveness of how to think about the contrasting styles. I don't think the bias of the judges comes from an anti comp persective as much as it perhaps did from their watching so much skiing. That probably made Magnus stand out and stick in their heads rather than LJ who had more conventional tricks.

LJ's part was absolutely crazy in how hard he pushed the limits of himself and urban skiing. It was an amazing part don't get me wrong and I would have been completely fine had he won even while rooting for Magnus. I hope he can release a full season edit later in the year reusing shots because a minute and a half real ski edit can be lost in the shuffle. It's up there with the heaviest urban segments ever alongside Clayton in Mutiny, Cam Riley in Network, and LJ in the Grand Bizarre. I was hoping he'd take silver and fan favorite so we can see another next year.

I think I saw the same thing you did but I don't need to rethink how to win a contest because this was based on video parts without standardized features. Magnus won not only for technical skill but also for creativity and innovation which the judges relayed many times over. His edit showcased a new realm of urban skiing and it got rewarded as such in my eyes. The cool part about a video contest is that sometimes it's not just about finding the longest and gnarliest rail or throwing the most tech tricks.

It's two different lines of thought and entirely a subjective matter but I don't think it's fair to totally discount and discredit the opposite side. Different strokes for different folks. Can't wait for Lj and Magnus' parts next year and I couldn't be more stoked they'll both be in it again.

I appreciate your response and taking the time to support your views. And I think we actually hit a rare equilibrium where arguing any further would get absolutely nowhere.

I just want to make clear whenever I said "you saw this or that" I wasn't directly referring to you even though I quoted you, I was simply talking about anyone watching the edits or reading my post. No shots fired, just chose to go back and forth with you a few times because you represented an opposing viewpoint and the viewpoint of the judges which obviously many people disagree with.

Hell yeah man no shots fired over here as well and no offense taken. Agreed with the pointlessness of arguing any longer. After cruising through your profile you're absolutely legit and gotta respect that. You've got more standing to be an authority based on experience than me for sure.

I like the back and forth cause it's been reasonable and cool to see other arguements. Its also nice to actually see the forums come alive again for once. Cheers

When Will won last year, I made a distinction between what kind of urban skiing people wanted to watch vs what kind they'd wanna do. I loved watching LJ's part it's incredibly entertaining, but am I gonna go out tryna ski urban like him? FUCK THAT. Even a dude that talented had a half hour crash reel.....if anything, that convinced me to not start skiing urban. Made it look like work, like sacrifice same as the Stept dudes.

There's a famous Henry Ford quote, where he said "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses". Did you know the word "car" is short for carriage (or more accurately, horseless carriage)? That's how stuck in the past dudes were when cars were taking over.....most people don't think enough to know what they really want.

Point is we need shit like this to keep skiing fresh and keep it newschool. Any dudes who think "The Golden Era" ended in '09 need to turn the page.....imagine being 13 and fucking loving everything about skiing, but old dudes are saying the good old days died out when you were 4. Time is now, skiing is free right now same as it ever was.

I just watched Magnus' part again to refresh my memory and it absolutely blows my mind he won. I truly don't understand all these people defending him. Other than the nollies and the wall ride alley op to rail in the beginning, there was nothing that was really that impressive. That roof to roof transfer? Lame. Those hand drags? Lame. Those waterfall rails? Seen randos on here hit more gnarly ones, therefore, lame. That last shot? Would have been dope if he actually slid the rail and didn't tap it. I feel really bad for LJ.

Lame? What do you exclusively only watch pro edits or something? Like I don't care, I wasn't a judge, everyone got their chance and those were the results. I thought everyone killed it, always been an LJ fan and im glad he got something. But cmon, all of it was bangers, and yeah maybe some amateurs, or hell even randoms, have done some comparable stuff, but with extreme sports the difference between Am's and pros is always gonna be a pretty thin line, its really just a word and whether you have enough of a presence in the sport to get invited or skill to qualify in the big competitions. Eryone upset LJ didn't get gold, stop ripping on Magnus' part for the results of judging that he wasn't a part of. Not saying LJ's part wasn't killer, cool?

realy was not impressed by Magnus. Honestlly, if Ljs hadn't had so much gnar in it I would have voted Henrik. Im super sick of the bunch and I think plenty of kids could do that shit he did but not the stuff Lj did and he put in way more work so there we have it.

@ozzy or whatever your name is & @everyoneelsewhothinksLJwonoverMagnusorHenrik check yourself. Catch this new wave and gtfo out of the 2000s faze of skiing. That poduim was proper 100% get over it

Interesting results, honestly just happy all those who deserved to be on the podium were recognized. I can see why the judges voted the way they did but in this case for this year I don't agree with it. LJ's segment was just as innovative as Magnus', just in different ways. Both were very technical in their own right, but the judges obviously appreciated the new wave style, as so many of them know the importance of progression from the style perspective. I personally thought LJ's video needed higher recognition as taking his own form of innovation but the judges obviously valued the fact of taking new paradigms into how one skis at higher value. Can't hate it. Can't wait for next year's competition.

"Anyone taht do'nt vote for mah boy bunhc is not core enogh!1 LJ is nto real skniig! Is the new vawe fo ski such proper!1 Public is not core enug cuz LJ win pulbic votning! Sking shuld b like i see it!1 I'ts the 2000s ppl shuld get REAL!"

Magnus truly deserved 1st place, so did LJ. The thing I disagree with is Henrik finishing in front of LJ. Henrik's part was really good, his ender doesn't even make sense, BUT Henrik has a couple fillers in the middle of his part, like a lip on blind 4 on a 10ft high flat rail, while LJ doesn't really have fillers.

I think you have no idea what you're talking about, I typed it like that since that's how you actually sounded like, a stereotypic trendwhore stating that his opinion is the only right one. How can it possibly be that majority of members in a SKIING COMMUNITY thought that the gold medal went to the wrong person. Then you come and claim that everyone is wrong and not core enough. Lol k

Rory is the most core. He has white friends that he calls his niggas. You can't get more core than that.

This whole thread is the equivalent of liberals whining over trump becoming president.

Just shut the fuck up and go skiing

the big difference here being that the voters of X games real (literally newschoolers members + their friends) actually know the sport, unlike the public 'text to vote' that everyone and their mom actually voted for due to it being a live event on cable tv.... figure it out bahhddd

newschoolers + friends weren't the only people to vote for fan favorite. Xgames is huge, i bet ns accounted for half of the votes, maybe less. people voted for lj cause they played his video and he did a backflip to the pillar. i dont know this as fact, but xgames shared this shit on their fb and stuff like every day, i think its foolish to assume only ns voted.

Okay good point. But would you agree that the people watching and voting this year were at least a bit more interested in action sports and or skiing compared to the mass public viewing that winter X has on cable tv? I mean there's just no way the voters were as broad as they were when Xgames had text to vote on cable tv.

i aint watched nones of it

but the amount of time ya all spend gabbering and worrying about other peoples skiing is fuckin whack

shut up and go ski sumthin

or at least worry about skiin sumthin good

Y'all will learn soon enough. Lol to all those who think lg should've won. I don't care what he was doing none of it looked even remotely good
