any body live in cali that used to live on the east coast? how would you compare the too? im thinking about trying to move out there next year for school probably somewhere near san monica. also where would be the closest place to ski if i lived there?

I was thinking of trying to end up somewhere near riverside. hour and a half drive either way to bear or the ocean. Not a bad combo

uhhh, well california is a huuge state and has lots of different sub cultures but santa monica is a dope area. my not move closer to the mountains though? personally, i like northern california better even though it's not as warm. san francisco is only a 3 hour drive from North Lake Tahoe.

If you're going for northern you might as well try and get close to the tahoe are. Can always go to reno and gamble your wife and kids away.

california is a separate country basically, so whatever different culture you're looking for will probably be there. i'm an east coaster whose kind of fascinated by the whole scene out there. i'm looking at colleges around san francisco/sacramento area so that i can be somewhat close to tahoe while getting a decent education

but yeah california is pretty awesome, sick skiing, sick mountain biking, really active lifestyle in a lot of places unlike rural places in the east where everyone's fucking fat...but then again lots of places out west are like that, but cali is cool in the sense that you can ski at squaw, drive over donner pass, and 3.5 hours later be in balmy san francisco

only problem is that everything is so far away from eachother

what about schools out there? and what would be a general price range for apartments? like a two person appartment

I will never return to the east coast of my own volition. Ever.

If you are going to be in socal, mammoth is where you want to spend longer weekends or vacations, and go for day trips or weekends to the closer hills

If you go norcal, almost any hill in Tahoe is pretty fucking epic.

No way!!!! omg I never knew that. Mind blowing. Thank you for alerting me.

I guess it's irrelevant that it's only a half hour 45 min drive from truckee.

oh god. so many schools and so much variation in apartment price range. do a little research for yourself.

as far as close to the mtns but still a really good school, look at UC at Fresno (closest good school to skiing), USF, SF State, Chico State. Humbolt is a dope school and 3 hours from Shasta, i think it's like 5 hours from tahoe.

stanford is a decent school from what i hear, might not be challenging enough for you...

UC davis is good, agriculture oriented but probably like 2.5 hrs from tahoe

berkeley is really fucking good, probably like 3.5 hrs from tahoe

there's also sierra college in truckee which im sure is absolutely terrible but like 20 mins from skiing

sierra nevada college in reno which is like an hour from tahoe, still not a super great school and reno sucks

I realize you may have gleaned a lack of intelligence from the OP's first post but how did all those schools make your list and Cal and Davis didn't get mentioned? Both are closer to Tahoe and infinitely better than the schools you threw out. Suggesting anyone spend any time in Fresno is like suggesting they kill themselves.

Stephen, if you are really interested in going to Cali, then do it up. But as far as school combined with skiing goes, pretty much nothing beats SLC/U of U.

Well you failed to mention that. Good mountains, and the ability to go play some poker at the casino whenever, Plus reno gets a decent amount of tour's through. And not a completely god awful drive up to the gorge.

not that all of CA doesn't get hit with shows.

yeah california is the best. i love it here so much, even though i kinda live in the middle of nowhere. it's an hour and a half to ski, and an hour and a half to the coast to surf. lots of wakeboarding to be done in the summer. great weather.

the best part of california, however, is the mexican food.

Alright so i finally talked to my mom about it and she is cool with it and everything but i think im just gonna chill there without going to school for a year so i dont have to pay out of state tuition. I think im just gonna go to a community college for a year and get my grades up then transfer to a school with tuition exchange with RIT (i get free tuition there). So im pretty stoked now and just need to find a good place to live. Who lives there now and what you guys think of it?

i'd check out somewhere in the tahoe area. awesome skiing in the winter, and in the summer there's wakeboarding and all sorts of outdoor stuff. there's several community colleges around tahoe.

or if you want beach, san diego is one of my favorite places in ca.

I don't really know why i mentioned Fresno, I think I meant Davis by that but for some reason typed Fresno. Fresno would suck for sure. Berkeley just skipped my mind.

There also UC Santa Cruz which is a really chill school.

yea do it, i moved from jersey to utah and i go to cali all the time sooo worth it totally different attitudes jersey most people are stcuk and bro boys not as much over here and bear or mammoth

I am headed to California ASAP. I moved west this year (Victoria bc) closest we have to socal in canada. Basicaly I am never going back. I love how chill this place is and I love going to the beach in febuary. The girls are way hotter and are usually not stuck up like in the city. If it was a little warmer this place would be paradise and from what I have experienced that is basically Cali.

If youre going to live in the bay area, do yourself a favour and live in Berkeley, and commute to school (If you can't get into Cal - which is probable) or just live around that general area. Its central, super cultural, and way rad - and better than the crazyness in SF, and the drabness anywhere else...

Otherwise for places closer to skiing, look at schools up by sacramento (Sac St. and UC Davis) or check out Chico St. (even though I think its a boiling hot shithole, there's ALWAYS a party there [It's nicknamed 'party state' for a reason] - so its fun).

Also, even though it's technically not in California, UNR in Reno's got a really cool vibe, and is a good school too. And honestly, I think Reno's actually pretty cool now that I've spent a lot of time there. (plus its OH so close to skiing)

Ha, so much bad advice in here. Below is all from my firsthand experience.
If you're planning on working, go to Truckee or somewhere in the foothills like Rocklin (only an hour from the mountains and it has Sierra College, which is a sick junior college that I went to).
The best school that is reasonably close to skiing is UC Davis, I went to high school in Davis and it rarely took me longer than 2 hours to get to Tahoe. Maybe an extra 15 minutes to get to Squaw or Alpine. However, UCs right now are severely underfunded and are cutting back student enrollment, so unless you have higher than a 4.0 GPA, forget about it. They do have a guaranteed admission deal with the california junior colleges, but you'll have to go to JC for two years before you can transfer, which in the end will be well worth it with all the money you'll save. However, UC Davis party scene is marginal at best. Lots of asians.
Chico State is another option. Chico kind of blows, but there are a lot of parties, the school pretty much blows as well. Its about the same distance from the slopes as Davis.
I'll also let you in on another fact, Riverside fucking sucks. You're in the California desert, and you're at least an hour or more from the beach when you factoring in traffic. It has all the negatives of southern california with none of the positives. You're two hours or more from slush at Bear Moutain, and 6 hours from Mammoth.
San Diego is an awesome place, but you'll have to pretty much give up skiing unless you find people to take week long trips to mammoth with you. Girls in San Diego are hot as well. UCSD is right on the water, and San Diego State is 10 min inland, both fun schools to go to.
UC Santa Cruz kind of sucks too in my opinion. Go there if you want to be around lots of do-nothing kids with no real direction in life. The school is basically a giant arboretum up in the hills, about 10-15 minutes from the SC beaches. Most girls in Santa Cruz are broke. However, if you are good at surfing you'll have a good time there. Also, weed is practically legal here.
UC Santa Barbara is definitely the sickest UC. Its smack dab in Isla Vista, literally right on the ocean. Isla Vista is basically a community made for partying, makes Chico's parties look shitty. Again, you're skiing will be very limited, but you'll have an awesome college experience. Hot girls everywhere. The city of Santa Barbara is also a beautiful place. On the same note, Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo is only an hour north of SB, and only 15 min from Pismo Beach, which is sick. San Luis Obisbo isn't quite Isla Vista, but I've been to some sick parties there as well. A lot of hot girls at Cal Poly.
Cal Berkeley is a great school, still driveable to the mountains, but very tough to get into. Berkeley has its own vibe to it that isn't for everyone, get used to hipster kids and lots of asians. Also, the girls are even more bunk then the ones at Santa Cruz. Party scene is about the same as Davis, you'll be going to frat parties, which I dislike.
You should also look into University of Oregon if you're moving out west. Its cheaper than the UCs and there is a much better chance of getting in as a freshman. You could try working in Bend for a year, which is only 20-30 minutes from Bachelor, and establish residency. Residency tuition is pretty cheap up here.

Both UNR and Sac State are decent options as well that I left out. Sac State is a bit on the boring side though. You'll meet lots of people that ski and snowboard at UNR, so you'll have plenty of people to carpool the 45 minute drive with you. However, some parts of Reno are pretty fucking sketch. I saw a stabbing at a party I went to there and vowed never to party in Reno again.

If you've ever lived in the places I have... you'll realize Reno's fucking tame as shit.

There's been an average of a murder per week for the last 2 months in my hometown of Antioch... and its also the place where they found Jaycee Dugard or whatever (google it if you never watched the news last summer...).

Also. Whats with all the Asian hate I always freakin see haha.

Go to Oregon, honestly. So much doper of a vibe. I've grown up in OC my entire life though, so that probably changes things for me.
And we hate Asians because of their driving. So bad, so many car crashes because of them everyday.

This guy knows whats up. A million Mexican food places everywhere makes my life so much better. Roach coaches, Vallarta supermarkets, Burrito Factory, Del Taco, El Taco Llama, Pretty much the shit.
California is great. Legal weed, fucking hot chicks everywhere, cruising Venice boardwalk on my longboard looking at the pipe shops and tattoo parlors (you would be in walking distance of Venice if you lived in Santa Monica, its pretty much one of the coolest places in LA, not to mention there is also Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade right there). Rad mountains, pretty cool beaches, home of Stone Brewery (San Diego) who makes possibly the best Ale (Arrogant Bastard) in the country. We got movie stars just walking around and shit. My dad got drunk with Andy Dick at the opening of an art gallery last weekend, but he didn't know who he was till I recognized him in a picture. Tons of bomb sushi everywhere, good weather if you are into that sort of thing, Catalina island for scuba diving and shit.
So yeah basically if you haven't moved to LA already I don't really know what your waiting for. I might move away soon because I've always lived here and its a little played, but honestly its going to be a really hard decision. I love LA but the SoCal weather gets to me, I start getting really angry when it doesn't rain for like 6 months straight and when its 110 degrees in the summer. Might move to Seattle.
Also Mt Baldy - 1 hourMt High (shitty mountain but pretty legit park, no massive jumps but a lot of cool boxes and shit everywhere, features on almost every run) - 1 hour 30 minsBig Bear/Snow Summit - 2 hours 30 minsAnd of course the big 4 and a half hours for Mammoth and 6-7 hours for Tahoe.

You better be absolutely flying to make that kinda time... and pick up 3 tickets on 395 on your way up.

5.5 hours to mammoth MINIMUM, and thats if youre out by San Berdoo or something... Tahoe's more like 8.5 to South Lake...

I live on the Northern boundary of LA County , right under the grapevine, so I get about a half hour to an hour head start on the rest of LA. Then I drive 80-90 the whole way. It generally takes me about 5 hours but if I don't stop and really mob it then I get there in 4 and a half sometimes.
When I went to Tahoe it took me about 8 to get to North Lake.
For the record I've only ever had one speeding ticket and that was 2 minutes from my house while I was at work.

^Also my buddy somehow made 5 and a half from the lodge at heavenly but he must have been going like 120 the whole way or something because that is just ridiculous. I think he might have taken the weird way where you go by Mammoth though.

That was my friend's car, I was in the backseat, 65-70 mph into the back of us when we were at a dead stop in traffic. Some stereotypes are true.

I'm coming up on my 16th year in Fresno bitches. For college, I wouldn't really want to go to Fresno State is I was from out of the Fresno area. Like said, Nor Cal is going to be way better skiing wise. I would try for Sac State, UC Davis is the closest UC to skiing (good skiing). UC Santa Criz or Cal Poly would be good schools to go to, but skiing will be tough as the closest place is China Peak (which you can come shred with me) and Tahoe is a little farther. So Cal wouldn't be that bad for skiing either as most schools down there have ski teams (that means skiing Mammoth, which is what Jesus would be if Jesus was a ski area) and the beaches are prime. I think you will be stoked almost anywhere you go in CA.

You could ski Mammoth from Norcal too.. Its about just as far from San Francisco to Mammoth as it is from say, Longbeach... You just have to pass by a crapload of resorts to get there... or take the plane from San Jose (costs about no more than about 140 bucks round trip. which doesnt suck IMO - especially if you have a place to stay within walking/shuttle distance to the slopes, and can get hooked up with enough tickets to last about a week or something...)

Also. I think if jesus were a ski area... he would be chamonix... which is what jesus is to me... chamonix, and vallee mont blanc...

Alright well I think skiing is pretty much out of the question next year, I think it's just gonna be too expensive. So that really isn't factoring into where I go. But I've been talking to my mom more and she thinks I'm just gonna go to cali and go broke which is a great possibility. So what I'm thinking is this summer I'm gonna aim for like $2000 bones to go there with, and then get a job when get there and work like 30-35 hours a week. With rent, utilities, and splitting car insurance with my buddy I think I could afford it, my mom seems to think other wise...

That's true, it's just highly unrealistic to pass by so many killer resorts and drive an extra 2.5 hours. I'm sorry, Jesus resort of the US, in terms of an all over type of resort (killer terrain and killer park).

If you like smaller colleges, I go to one of the five claremont colleges (about 30 miles east of L.A., aka the inland empire). If you go to claremont mckenna, the school buys you alcohol, plus we have really good econ and poli sci dept's and it's a forty minute drive to Mt. Baldy or an hour and a bit to bear.

If you cant afford a pass outright, or arent going to have much time due to work, there are about a 1000 chances to get free day passes if you check into it early enough in the season. you could end up grabbing at least 5 -10 days on some real slopes, real easily if done right.

Well, $2000 isn't much at all I'm afraid. Even in the shittiest areas of LA you can expect to be paying at the very very minimum $900 a month. Of course whenever you move into a new apartment you need double first months rent up front for the deposit, so that would leave you with $200. If you are moving into a place someone already has you might get away with it, what with deposit already taken care of and splitting the rent. There aren't any jobs here right now though but I'm sure there are probably more than a lot of places. It shouldn't be hard to get a stocking/shipping job or something. If you aren't going to school I don't see why you wouldn't work 40 hours a week, being able to work full time will dramatically increase your job prospects.
