Living good life

Finding a thing you want to do for the rest of your life is a very soothing thing, especially when it involves something you love. ( it should be ) I am a sophomore in high school. Got an older brother who is a neat freak and wants to be a doctor or a lawyer. Kid Is a parents dream. He is neat, respectful, bright and a hard worker. Now how do you live in ones shadow like that. Easy you don’t. I recently was employed at a local ski shop and realize how much I love it. I am a skier. I live 5 minutes away from a ski hill. I ride the park, the groomers, the moguls, the trees, and the out of bounds. Anything really. I spend my nights looking at the latest ski gear and browsing websites.

What I am getting at is that I wouldn’t mind working at the ski shop for the rest of my life. Either tuning or selling skis. I want a simple life. Live here for the rest of my life. shred pow and fun

YEs my brother and i are good friends. No i don't look at it that we we have always had different interests

One thing I don't like about high school these days is that it's sole purpose is college prep, which is great for those who want to (and should) go to college. But some people don't want that lifestyle for very simple reasons. Like you said, you would be perfectly happy living a life in the mountains. High school is more or less useless for prepping someone to be on their own right out of high school these days.

I am still going to college even though I plan on living a pretty simple mountain life... everyone thinks you need to be riich to be happy, false... you need to ski, and do it alot. mountains are where it is at for sure

Dude. Ive got the perfect solution. It is the most overlooked option for someone who wants to shred and go to college. Go to Gogebic Colege in MIchigan for SKi Area MAnagement. Its a two year degree of Applied Technology and you learn everything from grooming and snowmaking to rental, lift ops and pretty much everything involved with the industry. MT. Zion is on campus where you do everything. And youre sophmore year you intern out west, where im headed right now.

that's a solid plan... but definitely still go to college so that you work in a shop because you want to, not because you can't get a job anywhere else.

maaaan i think about this shit all the time

ones future is scary biz

im a junior in HS and dont really know what i wanna go to college for...

i wanna go to college less for the education and more for the experience.

i think that it would be be mad fun, and there would be a lot of good times. i'm thinkin of taking buisness courses and stuff like that in college cus it would prepare me better for the life i wanna live than like trigonometry classes and stuff like that.

o yeh, and im a junior in HS

You think the shadow your bother casts is bad?!?! Mine has all that yours does, is in all these honors societies, gets recognized for everything, is more popular, and is a pro baseball prospect. Im a decent student that has been forced out of every activity except skiing because he was better at it. Try living in my shoes

Working at a shop is the shit. I love it. perfect for a true ski bum. its the only way you can afford skis and passes and still call your self a ski bum.

working in a shop you won't make a lot of money. you know what that means: if you have to take care of your parents ie nursing home, youre fucked shit is expensive. also you won't be able to support a family so likely even if your lucky enough to get a wife you won't be able to afford kids.

yup. happy people aren't rich people, or well "career'd" type people (unless you just love what you do). figure this out sooner rather than later kids.

you know, thats a really good way to approach life. seriously. i am sorta planning on being an engineer, but its my first year of physics and i HATE IT. i mean you cant really be an engineer without being good at or liking physics. im so confused as to what i want to do now. i am pretty smart, so i have only considered a profession that takes alot of schooling etc. but i see exactly what your saying, cus i think i'd be better off doing something i love rather than something i hate but get payeddd. thanks man for making me see thiss. how old are you btw?

thats really my dream job.. i dont want to be a big hot shot cooperate guy with 5 cars and a masion in a stuck up neighbourhood. i cant picture myself doing that. The description of your job really made me want to go ski and it got me stoked on how pleased you can be with a job like that. it would be sick if i did something that involved skiing when i am older.

that doesn't matter at all, and even if you did know exactly what you wanted to do, there is a very good chance that you would switch majors anyways. i'm a sophomore in College and I still have no idea what i'm going to do.

also, to the thread creator, I would still recommend going to college and at least trying it out even if you just want to be a ski bum all of your life.. the are the best years of your life and I know that everyone says that shit, but they truly are.

the hell are you talking about? i know quite a few ballers who are plenty happy with what they do. persoanlly i think its easy to sit back and say " i dont want a job where i g et paid an asston of money" thats just straight silly, if your motivated enough you can go find a job that pays legit and makes you happy...its possible to have both

yeah, I also just got a job at a ski shop and i'm stoked as hell. As for college I am also going into ski resort management as my major, because I figure i'm going to have to work once i get out of college... so why not do something that i love. I hate these people who work jobs and come home and complain about it everyday, I'm only 17 but damn, even i realize these people really need to take a look at their lives and figure out something that will amke them a little more happy. and i reccomend SKIING!

You people obviously haven't worked in ski shops long enough. There are good days in bad.

You will hate it and if you don't then I can only assume you are just another mindless dolt prepared to be shit on by society for the rest of your life.

Skiing everyday is all well and good, but making shit money and living paycheck to paycheck won't work for the rest of your life. What happens when you blow your ACL or get fired for coming drunk several days in a row?

It is one of the few jobs where you can drink at work and it enhances your performance.

dude ski shop is only my weekday job, i also got a park crue job this winter, and as for my experiences at the ski shop... I don't know where you work but I don't get shit on by society and it is a mad fun job to sell ski gear, beats the hell outta selling twinkies at 7-11!

or instead of going to ski in michigan you can major in ski resort management at Lyndon state College in Vermont which is close to a bunch of sick skiing

werd, the point is do what you want to do. i just had a really long conversation about this, so i think it really is about doing what you want to do. i realize theres those people who fit societies image perfectly, but just realize your potential, and where you have it use it man. but just do your own thing, like for me starting a company (check it out), and you definitely wont be in anybodys shadow.

Your company?

I still hope that's an elaborate joke, if not then may god help you.

And a simple life? Life itself isn't simple, everything going on is. You want a simple, do shit life? Then be fucking amish or join a cult. Fucking get over yourselves and don't give in just because it's easy.

i used to think i knew exactly what i want to do the rest of my life, ski, and do ski related things all the time. but recently ive started realizing that i have absolutely no idea what the hell i want to do the rest of my life. part of me wants to live out of a van or motorhome for like 10 years and go do sweet shit all over the country, part of me wants to go live in the wilderness for like a year with hardly anything.
part of me wants to find a sweet ass place and build my own house.
everyone says i wierd, but i think it would be awesome to not have to rely on your boring ass job to make you happy, living partly off nature would be the most awesome thing ever. i met a badass relative last year who lives in wyoming with his family, in the same house he grew up in that his dad built, they kill like 2 big animals a year for food, and make their own fruits and vegitables, get their own water, anytime they need something the usually just build it. they built almost all the furnature in their house, and there are tons of people in his area that live the same way.
and for the little amount of money he needs, he sells some special kind of gardening thing, he only needs to go into town once a month to pick up his shipments and send them to the retailers, he has people that do everything else for him.
that would be so sweet, just to live on virtually no money, and rely only on yourself. thats the way to be.

XTremE11 That is just great, think about whats going on right now, money is going to be worthless in less than u think, that is just a fact!

so as we are all together in this pasion we have to be original and create, there are lots of stuff we can do and still ski every day! who cares if u wanna work in a ski shop or in a big hotel in the resort, or make ur own skiwear company, there are lots of stuff we can do and it all comes to the end of the day when we go up the hill and have the most fun ever, that is what bring us together and there are lots of ways to go over the system and not care about money to have a family, I am prety sure ull find the way.

We are skiers!

I wish you the best of luck in your pursuits. However, skiing is an affluent sport no matter how you look at it. If your someone like me that eventually wants to support a family and be to give my children the opportunity to ski than working in a ski shop is unfortunately not an option...Maybe owning one but even then...Anyway best wishes and much success to you!

yea thats true, but at least you knew what you were going to major in right? and thats how u got into college for a specific program?

nahh, I don't have a major... i'm in "university studies" which is the same as undecided.. and i know a shitload of kids who are in the exact same boat.. so don't worry about not knowing waht to do man, its normal.

dude, my brother and i are almost the exact same way.. he's going to a $40K per year school on full scholarship and shit.. and i'm... well i'm jupee.. and i just want to live my life in the woods..

your dumb as shit if you don't go to college. I don't want some 9-5 job but if something ever goes wrong at least I won't have to work at Mc D's or pull manual labor for the rest of my life
