Living around Hood

so relocating next season and I'm lookin at hood, probably looking to ski at timberline. I know the skiing will be sick but whats the deal with living/working there? I live in summit county, co right now and i'm looking for somewhere a little more laid back. Do people actually live in government camp or any of those towns or are does everyone kinda live in portland? is their anywhere to work/live like right near any of the resorts (im a cook so im looking for restaurantsand not that expensive housing. 500-600 a month max)? Is the place a total ghost town in the summer or do the camps bring in enough business for jobs that aren't totally seasonal? Whats a pass cost?

any feedback would be much appreciated
 
^yeah there is lots o people in the summer in govy, i would suggest welches, sandy, zig zag , or maybe even rhodadendren or brightwood. ^sorry i suck at spelling
 
I figured I would just make sure you know that terrain wise, T-line sucks. Their park is sweet, and there is the glacier in the summer, but besides that, the mountain isn't a ton of fun.

For anything resembling "steeps", etc you need to go to Meadows or Skibowl, and even so it is limited in Oregon....

Everything is super close, though, so it would not be a problem. Skibowl is across the street from govy, Timberline is up an access road at the end of Govy, and Meadows is about 15 minutes away.

It seems most people I have talked to that work up there live in Brightwood or Sandy, with a few in govy and the other towns along 26, but I could be wrong. First season down here so my experience here is limited.

Portland would be a bitch of a daily commute. Even midweek when I drive it it takes me over an hour to get to Govy....

There are tons of places I am sure you could find work as a cook though. Good luck.
 
thanks for the responses. im not really into big steeps, whats around tline as far as like all mountain/powder jib stuff and trees? From what i've seen it seems like they get pretty good pow and im looking for some relatively mellow drops and stuff like that. I'm definately not living in portland i'll probably gonna try and find a place in the sticks and just commute to work a little.
 
Really....honestly.....the actual terrain there is crap.

If you want all mountain/jibby stuff, trees, you need to go to skibowl or meadows.

 
More or less, this is Mt. Hood in a nutshell. Just be ready for snow with a moisture content that's exponentially larger than what you're skiing in Summit County.
 
t line is way too flat for there to be any super good powder runs,, but there park is always clean and ill. I suggest you get a fusion pass, which is both t line and skibowl, they are 350. Skibowl has great trees, descent steep, and nice cliffs.
 
the hostel is always a fairly cheap option for living. its located in govy right at the base of ski bowl east and is $450 a month
 
i live in gov. its fun.. kinda weird.. but if you like smoking copious amounts of really good chronic nd getting drunk constantly than im sure you will find its the perfect home.. with ski bowl in town and mt hood meadows and t line 15 minutes away. t line is good for park but for sure not epic for pow in winter. it is totally flat but its pretty chill to work there or ski bowl... in the summer you will be evicted from your home so that ski camps can rent it out for twice as much as it costs in winter, youll have a really hard time finding a job.... and unless you work at t line or for a camp youll have to pay 800 dollars for your palmer pass.
 
work at tline in the summer. skibowl works too, but you have to do letter exchanges, and are limited to (2) a week per person.
 
The fusion pass looks pretty tight, ill prolly go with that since it seems like tlines terrain is pretty lame. I'm originally from the east coast (philly then burlington vt) so heavy snow isn't really a problem for me at all, just as long as there's plenty of it. when does the winter season get goin out there, do most people just staying for the winter move in at november or december?

Also, how's bachelor compare to hood?
