Live Your Dream

Many of the Threads ask 'how to get sponsored'? One of the recent threads was about 'the older we get'.

If you really want it, it is right there waiting for you. All you have to do is 'Do it'. I know this sounds like a Nike Slogan but it is so true.

Ghost Dragon talked about the 4 P's: Perseverance, Passion, Practice, and Patience. This is so true, This is what it takes, You all have it, if you really want it.

I gave up my full-ride college scholarship to go to a 'Ski College', We worked hard to get degrees in Ski Resort Management and also in Ski Instruction. We worked at the Resort everyday, we skied everyday,We averaged 150+ days a year on our ski's. We also did like all College kids and Partied Hard.

Afterwards We went out to make our livings doing what we loved. Free Skis, Boots, Bindings, Coats, Gloves, etc...Good money for some, survival for others.

We entered every kind of contest available and managed to make a few bucks. Some of us were invited to Ski for the Photographers of the mag's, some of us were invited to lay it out for the film makers.

One year I was paid to Ski 274 days (I missed about 30 days due to travel, or I would of had a 300+ day season.)

I help guys and gals just like all of you to learn the tricks, spins, inverts, and marvel at how far the sport is going. I see kids that are so gifted with talent but they can't stay off the reefer long enough to realize they can make a living doing what they love, For them it will always 'Be a Dream'. I see others that don't have the gifts but have the desire to succeed, these will 'Live the Dream'.

Your choice, Your Dream, Your Life.

scot schmidt, is that you? maybe some people need sponsors because they can't afford certain things...sure my parents could be rich, but if certain peoples didn't help me out in certain ways i couldn't afford to ski half as much as i do...especially with gas prices the way they are today. but i agree, too many kids worry about it for the wrong reason, looking for a handout...but what ever, ignorance is bliss (what?) it just takes awhile to learn that it is a business and you have to provide, not just them.

that was very profound.

ya but dude some people will never make it no matter how hard they try. dont go saying we all can. there arent 20000 best people in the world.

The points above are made, very well. If I can add a different perspective: that of a sponsor.

When new school was truly 'new', sponsorship was easier. Now that it has taken off, the hills are saturated with many 'worthy' skiers. The question left is what unique quality do you bring to the table(top)?

Are you doing innovative tricks? Are you beating the sponsored pros in competitions? Does your persona/look appeal to a market segment/demographic not explored or captured already?

If you can answer 'YES' to these, then you are on your way...

when newschool was new sponsorship was easier? hahaha, yeah right...people are just starting to take this shit seriously now, what do you think the industry thought of it five years ago.

you should make this an article too so it's always there to read

I honestly think the reason why I couldnt make it, is because I don't have the proper people to teach me things I need to know, I basically ski alone. I also think that the area I live in, and how its so expensive to take trips places, its tough to get good when you have circumstances like this, and tons of others

Sponsorship is good but it takes away from your skiing....I tryed to get sponsored worked hard and got no where just hurt my self and did stupid stuff. You gotta ski for yourself and make it fun and if people like the way u ski how u wanna allways ski then thats awesome. Also other people who live at mammoth and other really popular places will have a bestter chance then those in nebraska or little hills on the east......sponsorship is good but only if u enjoy it

uh, right.

word oldpro, if that is your real name. Everything you said is so true. I've known for some time now that I don't want to do anything except ski but I've been kind of half assed about it, largely because I don't have anyone to ski with. I've been frustrated by my lack of progression and at times pretty down on my riding on the whole. Recently though i've started laying off the weed when I'm riding and focusing more on setting and obtaining goals and it has helped my progression immensly. I've also been thinking a lot about various other potential ways for me to be a part of the skiing industry I love for the rest of my life, among them the ski-college plan. I'm at a point now where I've realized I don't want to fuck around anymore and I've got to get my shit together now or never. I'm not super old but at 21 I'm not getting any younger. I'm finally going to High North this summer instead of wishing I was going and I'm moving to Whistler next winter. Hopefully those two things will help make my 'dream' as you put it more of a reality. Props again on your inspirational words.

'ya but dude some people will never make it no matter how hard they try. dont go saying we all can. there arent 20000 best people in the world.'

There's not 20000 best people, what separates the best from the rest of us is that they can see beyond it all and understand what it takes to get them to that level.. and then work for it.

Out of those 20,000 people there is only a few, and you have the potential to be one of them, whether or not you do anything with it is up to you.

And some people will not make it - either because they give up on themselves or physically are unable. But you will never know until you try.

Just do what you love doing.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

Being my 1000th post i want to make it special.

What I said was from the perspective of a sponsor (read my first sentence). Regardless of what was thought of new school, the community of impressive skiers was smaller, hence the choice (by the sponsor) was easier. Re-read it in context. Cheers.

Well put. Not everyone can make it, that's true (as posts above said). But if you have the dedication, the arsenal, and the stamina to put yourself out there, you can get sponsored if you want to. There's nothing holding you back. The only thing is yourself and the limitations you put on you

word to oldpro for opening everyones eyes to what it actually takes to get sponsered

Ski because it’s fun. Also, ski for the ladies cuz the next best thing after an epic ski day is a fine ass chick. -John Reedy

Some place warm, a place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Aspen.

yea I'm at this point to, I want to further skiing, thinking about taking ski resort management at selkirk, I was just wondering if there is a real future in this career, old pro you have any advice?

'Don't like hesh - Don't like rap - kicked ol' sally cos she fat - I'm a jerk I'm a punk took a shower cos I stunk - smoked a bong killed a cat - had my nuts attacked by rats dad got nude - I wore a thong - for a hobby I make bombs' Tom DeLounge

The Ski Industry is Huge. Think about all the facets that are involved. First there is the Equipment and Accessories Markets and their Rep's. Second think of Pro-Patrol and Avalanche Prevention, this is usually where one starts if they wish to get certified as a Mountain guide. Ski School, like it or not they still get the first shot at all the new girls (or guys) that come into the resort. Snow grooming, mountain management, Snow making, Sales, Marketing, Management,Coaching,etc...

Talk to the people that you see in these positions at your mountain, ask them why they work at the mountain and whether it is worth it.

Its not always glamorous and somtimes you have to work while others play. There may be 6 people and three big dogs living in a three bedroom place. You may only get one decent meal a day while you work. You probably will have Duct Tape as your main Fashion statement. You will be broke at first.

However you will be at the mountain with a free or nearly free season pass. You will fiqure out how to get sweet deals on new equipment. And YOU WILL SKI EVERY DAY FOR THE FULL SEASON.

Yes you can make it be anything you want it to be.

GhostDragon and Warren make excellent points, as did several others. Line69 you are on the right track. Don't worry about sponsorships, ski because you love it, things will take care of themselves.

If I could give you all one peice of advice it would be to try it for a year and see for yourself. You can always go back to School or the boring job at the factory, but you will never have the oppurtunity to ski everyday if you don't 'Just Do It'.
