Little help?

This is not my area of expertise. It's on my assignment, due tomorrow. Hopefully a bunch of you know things about speakers.

""3. At times in an auditorium, the speakers "howl" or whistle due to "feedback" especially if the microphone is in front of the speaker(s)? What do you think is happening? what would be the important features which would determine the frequency at which the speakers howled?""

Also, I'll just throw this in here even though I doubt I'll get an answer, it's the other one I don't know:

""6. The French Horn is an instrument which is played in the same way as a trumpet is. However, the bore on the French Horn is conical, rather than cylindrical. French horn players also tune the modes by sticking their hands into the horns of the French horn. What do you expect this will do to the tuning of the lowest few modes?""

And I'm tired...

I should not have let you go.

i kind of learned about the speaker thing... something to due with the waves changing in the mic and making shitty feedback, plus the quality of the mic and speakers... sorry i cant help more

Years and years of practise my friend. One day I'll grow up, maybe.

about the french horn thing, I know that with the lowest few modes, it'll be increasingly harder to get the perfect pitch, but I have no idea why.

Is it possible to have the mike between the speakers and not too much in front, or lower volume a bit, But I guess you have already tried that cause ya seem to know more about it than me!

Yeah I got the first one with the speakers and everything... I think. Now I just need that french horn deal... I don't know why it should sound different from a normal mute, but again I can't really figure this crap out at all. I mean, what does the conical bore have to do with it?

Microphone feedback occurs when the microphone senses sound from the speaker that it is outputting to. The sound goes through a vicious-cycle and gets louder. The frequency probably has to do with the volume of the speaker.

French horns are conical brass instruments. They flare gradually throughout, instead of just at the end. I don't know how this affects the sound.

Does the french horn thing have to do with constructive/destructive interference? I"m not 100% sure how you play a french horn, but look at this and see if it makes sense.

If you have a hollow tube open at both ends, then the frequency of the sound going through it stays the same, but if you cover up one end then the sound waves reflect. When the reflection meets the original sound waves, there is interference which will cause a frequency change. To determine the frequency change you have to take into account the length of the "pipe", so if you put your hand at the very end, you'll get one frequency, where if you put your hand farther in, it changes the length, and consequently the frequency changes.
