Little 4th of July reminder....

Just to put things in perspective....NO POLITICAL DEBATE, just read and it respect the troops.....

When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by

the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example

of empire building' by George Bush.

He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United

States has sent many of its fine young men and women

into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders.

The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return

is enough to bury those that did not return.'

You could have heard a pin drop.

There was a conference in France where a number of

international engineers were taking part, including French

and American. During a break, one of theFrench engineers

came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest

dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft

carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What

does he intended to do, bomb them?'

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our

carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several

hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply

emergency electrica l power to shore facilities; they

have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000

people three meals a day, they can produce several

thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each

day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in

transporting victims and injured to and from their flight

deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does

France have?'

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference

that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian,

Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception,

he found himself standing with a large group of Officers

that included personnel from most of those countries.

Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped

their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that,

whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn

only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have

to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking

French?'

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe

it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans

arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'

You could have heard a pin drop.

AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...

Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in

Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his

passport in his carry on.

'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer

aske sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France

previously

Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.'

The American said, ''The last time I was here, I didn't have to

show it.

'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports

on arrival in France !'

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard

look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore

at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country,

I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to.'

MERCA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

those were all sick, i was gonna say especially yada yada but they were all so badass. colin powells was really awesome though.

I will always support my troops. I had a few family and friends join the military after the Iraqi war had already been happening and I would hope that most Americans would support and look up to them cause I know I do.

honestly i don't want to sound like a stu[pd american ever n though that is how the world has made us to talk but the world forgets about all of the good tihngs america has done for everyone like liberating west germany from the starvation that insued after ww2 and everything you have said but the world continues to pont out the flaws.. honestly you choose a country and i promise i can find a fault

All im gona say is, my dad lost one of his closest friends in iraq, flying torandos. Not because of the iraqis shooting him down, but the americans, some stupid yank targeted their aircraft and proceeded to shoot, killing both the pilot and the navigator. Im not saying this is Americas fault, but it just pisses me off, me and my dad lost a great friend.

Upon second review, those sucked. Why do we get off by making other countries, in this case France, look like pussies?

Don't worry, all of those quotes were made up, with the exception of possibly the Colin Powell one.

Oh looks like I was right.

Summary of the eRumor

The story

is that U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell was speaking in England.

The Archbishop or Canterbury asked whether plans for a war in Iraq was

really an example of "empire building" by President George Bush. Powell

answered that the U.S. has sent many young men and women to fight in

foreign lands but has never asked for any more land than is enough in

which to bury those who did not return.

The Truth

What most people want to know is whether Powell made this statement.

He did, although some other facts in the eRumor are incorrect.

First, Powell's statement was not made in England.

It was during a presentation to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland during January, 2003.

Second, the questioner was not the current Archbishop of Canterbury, but the former Archbishop, George Carey.

Third, Carey was not asking about "empire building."

He asked

Powell whether the U.S. was relying too much on "hard power" such as

military action as opposed to "soft power" such as appealing to the

common values of the major religions and building trust based on those

values.

Powell

responded by affirming the "soft power" of values but that it was the

"hard power" of the military that, for example, helped free Europe and

so the "soft power" of peace and reconstruction could take place.

Powell then said, "We

have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years

and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put

wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their

lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them

in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to

seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there

comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where,

unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works."

The other two are just made up. Beware of quotes with no names and no source listed.

funny, but made up nonetheless (except the powell one) and this is coming from a French citizen. (why would a boeing engineer know so much about a carrier? Boeing makes planes, not ships)

why does the US have to make itself seem so much better by putting down others though? The US is a relatively new country, they don't have all that much history, and when compared with others, it isn't all that exciting. Don't get me wrong, the US is great, i love living here, but some of the people here just make me wonder...

actually the French Marine Nationale only has 1, the Charles De Gaulle. I think they had 2 but were forced to get rid of the other a few years back.

But no other country in the world has nearly as many as the US, and i believe there is simply no need for them. I think 2 or 3 would suffice...when the hell do you have to move an entire naval air force of hundreds of planes across the world? Sure, they are cool etc, but having that many might just be a waste of money

they arent putting other down the messages are simply trying to say that alot of people are bashing america for the recent decisions made by our president. Starting to hate america for the things in the past 4 years that have happened in Middle East. When over the past 100 years we have done so much for the world and its people that you think they would be able to respect us a little more. And i think the french are being used because they bash us more than anything, and if it wasnt for our brave soilders they would be speaking German right now, probably along with half of Europe.

Just going to point out, you may have helped but you make it seem like it was only you who won world war ll. The English were there long before you guys. If it wasnt for the japs you wouldnt have even been in there.

i no that apperently this isnt tru.... but think hes and engineer and they r smart....... boeing makes jet engines for the millitary or at least used to..... so he prolly knows a bit about where some of these planes r kept????? maby im wrong but....

one of my friends works as an aerospace engineer, he's going to work and boeing, and knows nothing about aircraft carriers. Just pointing out that just because he's an engineer doesnt mean he knows specs on an aircraft carrier. No hate, just making a point. And you are right, boeing makes the F-18 super hornet which is a carrier based aircraft

And whoever it was that pointed it out above, i know the US had done a lot, but I wouldn't say they are disrespected and hated on. Ever been to Normandy on any June 6th? The people there celebrate and love what the Americans did, though it is true that the United States did not win World War II alone, which they like to think. Same with World War I, the US did not win it, they joined as the tide was turning. The problem people have is that, unfortunately today's United States is not much like the one that did all these fantastic things.

I personally feel that the US has somewhat lost our military direction, think of all the things we did in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and part of the 70s. Things that advanced science etc using the military.

arnt they replacing that w/ the new f22 raptor or w/e.......... maby a little only because weve been in iraq for wat 6 years now??? but i think that is a good thing sorta dont want to start a pollitical debate tho..... and im guessing they r still advancing technology and science but just arnt making it public... but ur right we r lossing a bit of power

Are you seriosuly trying to tell me America wasnt the deciding factor in WWII? Things werent looking so bright over there before we got into it. We landed on the beach on d-day, we dropped the bomb, we were the reason Nazi and japanese powers did not take over the world. If you really want to argue that i want to hear your points....

Britain suffered 7 years of war, America only did 4. America never got bomb like britain did, America never need rationing of food because the germans were cutting it off, britain did, Britain suffered 450,400 deaths and america only 418. IMO we all helped equal amounts, Russia probably ended world war ll in europe for good, but on the pacific front it was America, obviously because of their closeness etc...

You do understand that Britain was on the verge of being conquered until America finally came in, and anything they tried to do in France they only got kicked back into the sea. While they were making considerable progress in Africa the Americans were there fighting with them. Also, America had been sending supplies and pilots to the British.

they weren't on the verge of losing, Hitler was unable to send an invasion across the channel so he was simply terror bombing. And the US started helping fairly late with supplies, and most of the American pilots in the RAF had to sneak over through Canada, they were not "sent" over

There would have been no D-Day invasion without American forces. which means hitler would have had enough time to properly prepare for an invasion of Britain. It wasnt a question of if, it was when he would have the proper resources to invade. If we didnt step in, it would have happened.

Discussing alternative history is meaningless speculation, there are too many unknown factors to say "this is how it would have been without X".

Heres my point. Hooray. Its our Independance Day. What does America do? We use this day to say to the rest of the world:

"LOOK AT US, MOTHERFUCKERS! LOOK HOW COOL WE ARE WORLD! WHAT? YOU'RE FRENCH? FUCK YOU, YOU BAGUETTE STUFFING SURRENDER MONKEY! THIS IS AMERICA AND WE'RE LOUDER AND PROUDER THAN ANYONE ELSE! WE HAVE NO IDEA WHY YOU COULD HATE US!"

Regards to Lewis Black for sure btw.

Look, in all seriousness, I love my country. And I dont mind that main reason more than half of the population enjoys this day is because we get hot dogs and hamburgers and get to blow shit up. Fuck, I want a few national holidays in the spring and summer where we're allowed to do that too. But I dont think America is great because we're 'better' than other countries. If I could give you an example of why this country is great, I'd point to the single mother of four who was on welfare four years ago, and last month put down a down payment on her first house. I'd bring up my friend who just graduated college, first in his family, and is going to become a teacher back in his hometown. I'd show you my homebrew apparatus in my basement, my friends collection of anti-Bush posters and bumper stickers, and I'd take you on a month long trip around our nations national parks. Our country isn't great because other countries dont have as much world power or influence. Our nation should be great because of the advantages and rights everyone receives under our government and our intelligent use of freedom. Stuffing it down the faces of the rest of the world is bad form. I thought we were better than that.

whenn i was in an airport this past winter in Paris, coming back from a ski trip in austria. The ppl in the airport immeditatly targetted me, searched my bags 3 times, and in the line to go through secruity a french woman tried cutting my father my cousin and i and many other ppl who we were with, and we only had 45 min to make our flight. So my father said "Excuse me, but the line starts back there, and the woman goes in her french accent "I am going to be late for my flight." and my father said "So are we" So she said "I cant wait for u to go back to ur own country" and i just looked at her like wow, how could someone show soo much hatred towards us because we r from america. We then learned we were both on the same flight, and while in the airport in the US, she went through US customs.....bitchhhhhhhhhhhhh
