Linux, Anyone?

Ok. I'm almost to the point of killing this Win2000 computer. A worm has seriously f**ked up the OS, and there's apparantly no way left for me to fix it. I'm wondering if anyone has converted from Windows to Linux, and if so.....

1) Is it easy to wipe windows and install linux?

2) How are the linux programs compared to Win?

3) What distribution of Linux should I get? (Redhat, Mandrake, Debian, ect.)

Thanks.....

If you are talking about the blaster worm its really easy to fix. But if oyu really hate windows linux is a good OS. Its easy to wipe down Windows and to install Linux. Only take a few hours if that.

Linux is only a good option if you know what you're doing with a computer. I've been running it for quite a long time. Installing progams is a bitch. I try never to use RPM's, because package dependencies will fuck your shit up. Uninstalling is even worse sometimes. It also depends on what you use your computer to do. If you're doing word processing, and playing MP3's you should be fine. Don't expect to do any video editing. And if you want to watch even mpg clips... even if you are good w/ a computer, installing mplayer might be a huge bitch. But the blaster worm is easy to fix...

Yeah, like the guy said above, if you're wanting to do multimedia, stick with Windows. I use Linux at college and really like it, but I couldn't do without Photoshop and Premiere at home.

linux is good, its just hard to fix if it messes up

but computer message board people have been saying that reformating the drive, and completly re-installing w2k does NOT fix the problem.....

mabye installing windows millenium edition (not affected by this virus) will do it?

Hey!! no god!! no no no NO!!! !NO ME!!!whatever you do...you might as well just download every single virus there is then smash your computer with a sledge hammer, pour pudding on it, bake it at 6000 degrees, and then have run it over with a semi

buy another hardrive for like 80 bucks, put it in your computer, transfer the files you need ( not the programs) then reformat your main drive, and reinstall W2k....i can't see how that wouldn't work

Looks like rain to me.

Yea it should atleast. Thats odd how you cant install the updates for windows. Might wanna try downloading the patch that norton released that fixes it. THat might work.

dude, just reinstall the OS, its not that big of a deal. Just pop the win2k disk in when you boot, install it over the old version without reformatting, and you keep all your shit, but its a fresh install of windows. not that tough. I want to know what idiot told you that a complete format won't get rid of that virus. Thats the biggest crock of bullshit i've ever heard. A Virus/worm is a program. When you format, that program no longer exists on the harddrive (well it exists still, for anyone that REALLY wants to nitpick, but it doesn't exist anymore for our intents and purposes) therefore it wont effect your new installation of windows/linux/whatever. If you want specific help just IM me at andyrightcoast, i'm usually around and I can help you with a format/linux or windows install/whatever. If you're serious about switching to Linux, I can help you with that too, but its a huge step.

Sure, I coulda stayed.

I coulda been king.

But in my own way, I am king.

Hail to the king, baby!

no, i know that reformatting/installing the os should get rid of it....

that's why i took notice when many people were doing that, and it wasn't working.....

i dunno..... i'm still waiting on the burner to save my shit 4 now......

i'm gonna see how it goes from there.
