2nd most pts in the NHL, leading the league in goals(3 more than alfredsson, calling out lanks here), thrashers are on a tear and are going deep in the post season.
 
What are you talking about dude. They had a good record and won a weak division last year with a better team and were the only ones to get swept out of the first roung. And no, he's still not, Lidstrom is still the best player in the NHL game an d game out and the best forward right now is Lecavalier, who's unstoppable. I will say that you have a case to call Kovalchuk the most DANGEROUS player in the NHL... but not the best.
 
PS - people from Atlanta know nothing about hockey. Therefore you must be wrong. QED.

bitch nigga! and alfie's centre was injured for a bunch of games and he's STILL second in goals scored.

kovalchuk's on a tear... so is hossa lately, good for them, i expected it.

but kovalchuk doesn't play defense nearly as well as alfredsson does. alfie also is ottawa's main penalty killer... 3 shorthanded goals... he also does this think called bodychecking that kovalchuk has a hard time with. alfie's a more complete player, and therefore, a better candidate for 'best player in the nhl'. along with lecavalier, and of course crosby. and lidstrom.

 
Kovalchuk may be the best natural goal scorer in the NHL but all around player, no. Also the Thrashers wont be winning anything soon there goaltendings still not up too par and they have no depth on forward or D.
 
A realistic assessment of who the best players in the NHL are right now. Not the "most talented", "best scorer", or "most valuable to their team"... the best. In my less-than-humble hockey opinion. And yeah I think Heatley is a better player than Alfredsson... because he is, no matter what a Canadian article says (come on, like anything published in Canada is likely to pick a player on a US team, have you ever seen a TSN web survey?)

Iginla is not past his prime. Maybe he doesn't belong on that list, maybe he does, but he's certainly a wicked player.

And speaking of past their prime, shouldn't Joe Sakic be there like 2 years ago? That guy is amazing.
 
He's like the poor man's Yzerman, he just doesn't seem to go south in old age. But there are a lot of players better than him these days who didn't make that list.

i dont see why your able to say that someone else is the best player. your each entitled to your own opinion. if he thinks kovalchuk is the best, then let him be and if you think lidstrom is the best then so be it. neither of you are wrong and anyone else who mentions other players are wrong either.
 
So... what if I say that Chad Kilger is the best player in the NHL? Aren't I wrong then?

This is hockey, it's all about trash talk. If I can tell you your team sucks and make fun of you for cheering for them (and oh yes I can), I can make fun of your opinions, too. Because if they don't match mine, they're wrong.
 
And I'm saying I'M right because the other opinions don't count. And alleging the superiority of one's opinions is a vital part of hockey trash talk.
 
Biron may not be in the top 5, but he deserves some credit for bringing back the Flyers from the worst team in the league.
 
I give credit to the management for completely rebuilding the team in one summer. But it doesn't mean anything if they don't make some sort of playoff run... if they fizzle out in the postseason it was all just a big waste of money.

ohh you are soo wrong there......Luongo first? Good lord. Like he is good, but not nearly that good. Mikka, JS, Marty........but Lundqvist, and Luongo don't belong on that list. I say if you have to be the best player in the NHL......you have to look at past expearences as well ( since the season still has ALOT games to be played). Don't forget your rookies as well, the way Cary Price ( im pretty sure I spelt his name wrong) is playing, he will make that list.

My list for Best scorers in the NHL

1. Kovalchuk- There is no other player in the league that is as dynamic as him. No lead is safe whenever kovalchuk is on the ice, he has the quickest release on his wrist shot and the best 1 timer in the league.

2. Thornton- no arguments, solid player

3. Hossa, would be number 2 but has a slow start so is dropped a ranking.

4. Crosby- hate hate hate hate hate him, but sadly he s pretty good.

5. Heatley- hate him too, he's a murderer and should be in prison with vick, but he's still good. I still boo him every time he touches the puck in phillips arena

 
volchenkov has an insane number of blocks per game, especially last year in the playoffs, each game he had more than the rest of the people on the ice combined.

are you picking those shootout guys based on percentages, or moves? cause vinny lecavalier is the dangleiest player on the ice, next is crosby, the kid has moves, not the flahsy ones, but stuff that you can use, and see in his junior hockey games especially where he had time to move, where he'll act out of control, lose the puck, but is faking it the whole time, and blow past everyone
 
Kovalchuk is a great player, but among current active players in my opinion as far as hockey sense and overall career Joe Sakic still outweighs kovalchuck.  Think about it he's 38 and is still in the higher end of the scoring on a super offensive team where points are distributed very evenly.  I also feel Mike Madono is better, as is Jeremy Roenick.  Alot of guys like Hossa, Drury, Bure, and others have had mostly spotty and average careers with one or two years of a highlight.  Paul Kariaya is a prime example of this, he was terrible when he played in colorado, and was inneffective his last few years on the ducks until he finally had a good season last year with Nashville.

Look at the stats and things like Jeremy Roenick, Ryan Smyth, Joe Sakic, and Mike Modano have done for the league year in year out.  Neidemeyer is another even though he's on the edge of retirement, as is blake in LA.  The number of NHL greats is going down these days, but these active players are legends and are still outperforming 90 % of the league.

I'm curious as to how many of you have a long hockey background and or are just shouting out your favorite player thats having a great year on your favorite team.
 
i dissagree, Sakic is the key element to the Av's team.  While he's not on top in points he's still playing the same way he has in the past 17 some odd years.  He's one of the smartest hockey players in the league and almost any time you see him with the puck its a threat or he'll make some sort of fantastic play.  he has an amazing puck sense and an even better knack of where his linemates will be.  not to mention his still insanely quick wrist shot.  Yes i'm a huge av's fan but Sakic is one of the hockey greats of all time.  I honestly watch each game and cant see a drop off in his play at all. 
 
he killed dan synder who would be an all star by now. The city of Atlanta stood by him(i know,ive lived there my entire life) and he slaps the city in the face by being asked to be traded and then trashes it in the media. He's an ungrateful fuck who should be serving several years for involuntary manslaughter like what would have happened if any normal person would have committed that crime.
 
guess what, he isn't. He was sentenced to 3 years probation for vehicular homicide. The Snyder family have forgiven him, why can't you?

Let me introduce you to the elements of a homer:

1. You think two of the players on YOUR team are the two best in the league.

2. Your team isn't the 1991-1992 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Stop embarassing yourself, man. And same (to a lesser degree) to the guy who picked Sakic. Yeah, he's an all time great who's going into the hall for sure. And in his time (say, 1997-2001) you could definitely have made a case for him being the best player in the league, though guys like Lidstrom and Jagr, among others, would have had something to say about it. He's still a great player but he's just not the franchise anymore, you have to look to Wolski and Stastny now, Sakic is in the process of passing the torch. So no, he isn't close to the top.

By the way, I can't believe how many of you are basing this crap on the first 21 games of this season. Remember 21 games into last season? The Senators looked like an 8th place team. Then what happened? You can't judge this stuff on one season.
 
i agree with most J.D.'s picks and his arguments, except for best stickhandler, he didnt say Robbie Schremp (youtube him).

for an assessment on tender picks, its all up in the air. you could pick a couple year veterans like broduer, luongo, dipietro, but there are so many goalies getting a shot who are normally #2 that are making a show, i.e. Carey Price and Tim Thomas, and who could imagine that after going to the cup, emery would lose his spot to gerber.

all these opinions are merely that, opinions. kovalchuk is so hot right now, like hansel, but he is not the best. i think the best is the one who incorporates, speed, strength, contact, sniping, passing, dangles, and leadership, and i hate to be so conformist, but sidney crosby is all of that right now, and all his fellow opponents, heros, and teammates recognize it too.
 
there are so many underrated players it's scary but my choice is broduer for sure without him NJ wouldn't have accomplished half of what they have...crosby and luongo are definatly the future of the NHL in my opinion
