Has anyone here ever seen lightning during a snow storm or ligthning during the winter.

I have never seen lightning from mid december till the end of february.

I've only seen lightning when the temperature has been above zero and raining

there was one while i was skiing, it was crazy, with hail and super high winds, then it turned to snow by the time the lifts reopened so it was cool

I saw lighting during a really bad snow storm last year...was was sweet. Seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen. At first it was snowing fast but not like total blizzard...and off on teh horizon all you could see was a distorted bolt and flash of light. Later that night it was a full blown blizzard, and pitch black. The lightning was really closeto us, so every time it hit, it just lit everything up and we could see the snow falling for a split second. It be like if you stood in a storm at midnight and put a strobe light on slowly.

better to burn out...

...then fade away

I was in Utah last year and there was a hail/lighting storm. It would've been snow but it was warm. It was cool because the thunder would echo around and I'd never seen lightning in the winter. we got stuck in King Con area of Park City for a little bit though while the storm passed

Here in Australia we sometimes get thunderstorms with blizzards, they have to stop people loading onto the lifts because of the risk of a pole being hit. Also once I was skiing and a storm came, started raining and then hailing and then turned to snow and stopped hailing, fucking irritating.

A freak storm moved in on us at Silver Mt, ID a few years ago. It was fucking sweet! All the lifts shut down, the powere went out, and we were all stranded up there for a couple hours. Lightning struck some lift towers and one of them arc'd through the phone line on one of the lifts and shocked the guy using the phone (not bad). He just yelled fuck really loud and threw the phone down.

The wind was blowing so hard at the top of the mountain that you had to lean into the big gusts to keep from getting blown over...people were getting knocked down everywhere. People were stuck on the chair and most of us had to hike back up to the top of the area so we could ride the gondola back down to Kellog.

Yeah...I loved it. It was wicked tight.

Funny you should bring this up. Yesterday I was listening to JJJ (a radio station) and they have this program with Dr Karl where you can ask questions about stuff and someone asked this exact question. Some people rang in and said that they had seen lighting in a snowstorm but that becuse the sky was brighter with the falling snow and overcast clouds the contrast wasn't as great. They also said that you need to be closer to the lightning than you would in a normal storm.

If you want to have a look at some of the comments people made go to this site:http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/q&a/031002-5.htm

Steve Lee (the Aussie Olympian) even had his say in the guestbook on the subject.

i remember a day like that at crystal a couple years ago, the chairs were like perpendicular to the ground and shit... people were stuck on em just clinging for their lives... trees were falling down on 410 or whatever the highway is... one guy died cause a tree fell on his car. it was a fuckin mess.

wow. so many of you have seen it.. I feel so left out.... one time we had soo much freezing rain during the day that they had to shut down the high speed quad where I ski. the problem was that there was about 100-175 ppl on the lift at that time so instead of using ropes to lower us. it took 10 minutes to get some ppl to the top. they ran it at its slowest possible setting, so dumb

Well it's rare because two elements of lighting are warm air rising past cool air sinking. There needs be a big enough difference in the tempature of the two masses of air so that they rise/fall fast enough past each other for the ions to rub against one another and create static electricity. The cloud forms two ends one where the positivly charged ions go and the other where the negativly charged ions go. If theres enough of a charge it will need to even itself out by discharging particals. Hence lightning. So it's kinda rare to get warm enough air in the winter so that it rises quickly past the cool air.

It happened twice at Bogus Basin last year they had to get everyone off the Mountain for like 30 minutes.

I was up on Blackcomb one day when I stopped to take a piss and the entire sky lit up. It was foggy and the flash was almost like a green colour. It was really weird. I couldn't tell where it was coming from at all. The entire sky was alive for a split second. Turns out that strike hit Harmony chair and fried the electrical pretty good. Luckily the mountain was closed due to weather that day so nobody was hurt.

Just so you all know...being on the chairlift is actually a really sage place to be during a thunderstorm. You're not grounded so it's all good. If the chair you're on stops next to a lift tower then you might want to climb down the tower as fast as you can or jump off if the chair is low enough.

If the tower gets hit there will be an extremely bright flash of light and a really LOUD clap of thunder that immediatly follows(ever notice that thunder is louder when the lightning hits something like a tree or tower).

And then there's always the odd chance that something like a break fork or bolt or something get's blown off the tower by the thunder and hits you.

That would be the worst place to be on the chair but you would prolly be just fine if the tower got struck. A full crew at White Pass was on the ground no more than 20ft from a lightning strike that hit either a light pole or a tower...and they all made it through just fine.

So I wouldn't get too stressed if you're on the chair in a thunderstorm.

There was lightning first snow of last year, but it wasnt that cool cause it was still brown out. If it were all white out, it woulda been super sick cause all the snow would reflect the light

I know a kid that was skiing in march in north caolina, ad it was 60 degrees out, and in some 15 minutes, it got to around 20-30 degrees and started snowing really really hard. Then there was lightning and it lit up the sky, and they would only let people off at the midstation.
