Life after University/High School

Is it just me or does evryone not have a clue what they want to do with thier life after they graduate/ finish uni?

I think i want to go onto University, I've been accepted into 3 of my 5 choices; still waiting to hear from one more and all i need is a B this year to get accepted into the other.

But my problem is if/when i pass out of university, i don't know what kind of job i want to do, sure i'd love to forget about Uni and just be a ski instructor or whatever, but then i have no back up really to make any decent money later on in life......So basically, i hate decisions

a lot of people go into college with no idea of waht they want to do, then they try something and don't like it so they switch majors and try something new. Theres nothing wrong with not being sure of what you want to do, plan for a future, school really is the way to go. If you want to take a year off, just do it, it's not that bad. follow your heart, take all the advice you can from everyone you can and sort out the good and the bad.

Thanks man, + Karma.

I really want to get Uni done, have a degree, but im scared i won't be able to buckle down and cope with the work.
But i think if i do manage to get through it, il have saved up some money and can go to canada for a bit or somewhere and get a ski teaching certificate.

I'm in first year, second semester at university and I have no clue what i want to do after. Almost everyone I have met doesn't know either, even a lot of people that are almost finished. I say don't worry about it, just do what interests you so you can do good at it and you will end up working something out eventually. As long as you're happy and having a good time, that's what really counts anyway, imo.

If you really want to work on the hill, and make more money than the average instructor/lifty, go to school for it. You can get a degree in ski area management through a school in Michigan called Gogebic. They will teach you grooming, rental, lift mechanics, business, accounting, instruction, first aid, and summertime hill maintenence. Halfway through your second year they will set you up with an internship at the resort of your choice anywhere in the lower 48. They also have their own ski hill on campus, that the SAM students have full control of. You build whatever you want in the park with a cat, and basically bum the whole time youre there, and then bum when you get on intern. And come out of it ten steps ahead of the average ski hill worker.

The first thing I want to do when I get out of University is take that year off and travel Europe and Asia. It's a passion of mine to go places and i'd like to go somewhere before I get tied down with a job and family, I really hope it all works out.

I used to be super scared about leaving school, cus it would feel like i was getting so much older and shit, but i am really kind of excited now cus i realized i could go skiing when ever and actualy base my life on shit i would enjoy doing rather than doing bullshit homework assignments that dont mean jack, i dont know I guess we all reach one point were we are over school life eventualy, and it sure as hell doesnt mean we still cant party for the record

the most interesting people don't know what they want to do when there 40.

just go liberal arts and take it from there.

i never thought i would of joined the navy but yo, its what i want to do. all through high school, i would say fuck the armed forces. but college wasn't for me. i did do a semester btw. now i'm happy and will still have college because the navy gives you 40,000 for college when your leave active duty and while i'm in there, i can get as many credits as i want, for free. whats good with that?

Baz Luerhman - Sunscreen.

Thanks alot for all the input, its nice to know it's not just me that doesn't have a clue what to do.

7DP4 - Do you still manage to pass all your courses even though you hate some of them? That's one of my main concerns really.

i was kind of in the same boat. I ended up taking a program at school that allowed me to ski for a year in Austria and do something I was moderately interested in (business).

Lets face it, most scholastic programs really aren't that interesting for someone who is 19-25. Who wants to learns stats, math, science all that shit. I didn't really WANT to be there, but you just gotta pay your dues and then down the road you will get a good job.

Eventually I just got through it and at the end it always ends up working out. Just go with the flow and don't stress about it too much. I've got a great job now that pays well and allows me to go skiing every weekend and take a couple ski trips too.

I'm actually going onto Uni to do Business. (business with marketing possibly), so thats quite intresting.

What kind of business are you starting?

im wrapping up my degree in april and im gonna go and try and drum for like 2 years and if that doesnt work out then ill become a chef or something. too many people stress about this shit. its not a crazy huge deal, its the start of another journey! wooo!

Wow thats quite a goal, and a really worthwhile one aswell, something that could actually help the environment.
Good on you, hope you do well man.

bingo, that's exactly what im going to do...truth is it doesnt MATTER right when you get out of school. i'm graduating in decemeber and im gonna move back out to colorado, which is where i started college. probably just gonna hang out and ski instruct for a year or two before law school.

DEFINITELY want to work in the ski industry though, that's for sure...it's just a question right now of what, exactly, im going to do. it'll work itself out though, dude...dont sweat it too hard.

hm, ski companies use marketers

maybe you could intern at K2 or something, and then eventually work for them, like one of the guys that goes to the demos and shows people the skis

Haha you figured out my theories in choosing it. I was thinking, go to university, still ski (regularley hopefully). Hopefully stay being sponsored with LINE, then try and get a job with them in the U.K/ Europe/ U.S whatever.

Dude i'm at my 3rd university, in my 3rd course - haven't even graduated once...i'm just 'refining' what I want to specialise in.

And I still don't know where i'll end up working, and whether I'm going to take the 'work for a corporate giant and make decent money' road, or the 'do what I love doing and fuck the money side of things if you enjoy life' road.

if you really want to take a year off, don't listen to people who tell you that it's too hard to go back etc. etc. I went into art school right after high school after high school. Ever since I was about 15, I was SURE that that was what I wanted to do, and I felt great about having figured out what I wanted from life. After the six months, I was absolutely hating it. I had no clue what to do the next year, no direction, no inclinations, and absolutely no desire to do anything related to university anymore. I decided to take a year off to travel after being so burnt out after first year, and it was the best decision I've ever made. I'm now in photojournalism, and I absolutely love it. I'm not really sure what i'll do when I graduate, but I'm going to go traveling for 3 years or so afterwards, do some work for different NGO's around the world, try to get some journalism internship work, and basically just figure it out as I go along. Don't worry if you don't have a real direction, just study something that you're interested in, and you'll discover opportunities and options as you go along.

Go to school. Honestly, I don't see how you can figure out what you want to do without going to school (unless what you want to do doesn't require college). College is pretty fun and its not too hard to find a good balance between fun and schoolwork.

One more bit of advice, if you're worried about the workload and being able to commit to your courses even if you hate them, just try to come up with a really good reason to do it. My first year I managed a 3.16, which would be shitty for me now, but considering I absolutely hated every single course I was taking, and was completely miserable the entire year, I consider it pretty damn good. I just told myself that I knew I wanted to finish a degree in something, and that I didn't want any doors to close on me because of one shitty year at uni. This is why you need to study something you're interested in, if you have a clear goal in mind, it makes it SO much easier to do the work in the courses you don't like, because no matter what you're studying, you are guarunteed to have a few courses you loathe with a passion, even if you really love what you're doing.
