LGBT Athletes in Sochi

Two in the pink...

I don't know what to make of the rating of this thread.

Are people down voting because they are concerned with the War on Homosexuality? Or, the less anticipated reason, folks share the anti-human sentiments of the Russians?

Its not inherently hateful to have a moral ground to stand upon. People can be gay all day long, have fun in the poop chute, but to have their views forced upon me is not right. I care about the issue because homosexuality wrecks families and otherwise normal healthy relationships apart. I will respect any homosexual for who they are as a person, but wont respect their decision to act on those feelings ever.

hAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH what a fucking joke.

Because straight families are perfect. My best friend has a lesbian mother and gay father, and his family are some of the most driven and dedicated people I've ever met.

And the fact you said "wrecks... otherwise normal healthy relationships apart" leads me to believe that you have a single digit IQ score.

The thread rating goes up and down based on the posts in the thread. You don't have to upvote or downvote the thread to change the score.

If there are comments like the one on the first page rated very very low, you'll see the score of the thread go down.

homosexuality doesn't wreck anything, people's way of dealing with it is what you're talking about. And attitudes like yours are not helping, "they can be gay, I just don't want to hear about it" that's discrimination, that's the point.

you are straight in the middle of Bible-thumping Utah, so I can't totally blame you for your ideals.

i'd like to hear you expand on how you think "homosexuality wrecks families and otherwise normal healthy relationships apart"

seriously, please elaborate on that for us

I think my sig is of particular relevance at this point, and that you guys might just want to relax a little. I guarantee their thoughts on the situation are not what the average knee-jerker might like to whip you into believing based on a single sentence. Perception does not dictate intent my friend. Woo sah.

Bigot much?

" I will respect any homosexual for who they are as a person, but wont respect their decision to act on those feelings ever."

I will respect you as a person but I won't respect anything about you as a person. How do you feel about racism, women's rights, etc?

Seeing a close friend attempt suicide because his wife left him for a girl and another friends gay uncle die of aids are both pretty significant things. Questioning my intelligence and calling me a bad person does nothing but prove you are just intolerant to people with different opinions, also known as a BIGOT. Think before you try to make any valid points ever again...

Yeah, because your friend would have never attempted suicide if she had left him for another dude, and gays are responsible for AIDS, is that right ?

Dude you are TOTALLY misidentifying the root of the issues that effected you. Being gay doesn't give you aids or make you leave your husband, those are things that happen to straight people too.

Would it make sense if we replaced "gay" with "witch"?? Because that's how your brain is working right now. It's not the "gay" that makes bad shit happen dude, grow up and develop a valid, well rooted perspective already... This one is crap.

>Because nobody has ever attempted suicide after an emotional break up in a heterosexual relationship

>Because nobody has ever died from AIDS from a non homosexual reason. Also, it's called safe sex. Wrap it up. Get tested. Be smart.

a few other causes of AIDS:

-contaminated blood transfusions

-hypodermic needles

-mother to child during pregnancy

-breastfeeding

-oral sex (heteros too!)

Ah, so you have a ridiculous amount of life experience on the subject. I went to the city and all these black people kept hitting me up for change. I can't stand black people. You weren't there though and if you can't respect my opinion you're a bigot.

Also to your post it's not like any straight people have ever died from aids or anyone in a marriage has ever left for another person. Not saying it doesn't suck, but it's fucking ridiculous to hate a bunch of people you don't know based off of 2 people.

This is why when they take surveys they survey more than 2 people.

How about the hundreds of gay people who commit suicide every year because of people like you?

And straight people get AIDS as well, I fail to see how a disease has any bearing on whether a lifestyle choice is "acceptable"

And you're trying to call someone who supports a broader interpretation of civil rights a bigot? what?

Wait, so it's ok for a person to be a homosexual, you respect them as a person, but they don't have a right to act on it? You know that they are gay, you respect them as people, they're not really asking anything of you, and their behavior does not affect you in any manner. But you have a problem with them acting like who they are?

I don't think I really follow this logic.

It sort of strikes me as a tactic to make yourself feel more tolerant, and/or seem more tolerant to other people. Like

You sound like a politician that either (a) thinks homophobia is wrong but can't speak openly about it because his constituents feel differently, or (b) thinks homosexuality is morally wrong, but due to the widespread shift in public opinion on the matter, has to take a "nuanced" opinion that doesn't make him seem so intolerant.

Sorry man, but you don't have much of a moral ground to stand on. I wouldn't go so far as to say your stance is "hateful" because you seem to understand that hating people for who they naturally are is wrong. You just haven't figured out that preventing people from being who they are (within reason, of course) is also wrong.

must be a troll. No one can be this stupid. Not like women leave guys or other guys, or guys cheat with other girls or anything. Or maybe thats the healthy straight relationship you were talking about.

Fuck both of them. I don't fucking care how influential they both are in our industry, that shit isn't gonna fly. And they better not come at us with the "we're joking" routine because this kind of oppression shouldn't be joked about.

Yeah I could definitely see this thread blowing up again when the news develops about Russia, maybe they'll change their mind, maybe the IOC will end up protecting the athletes at the Olympics. Who knows? They're just my guesses.

Wow, I had no idea. See, when I told you you were a bad person I spoke too soon. I didn't realize you were going to respond like this. I'd like to retract my previous statement.

You're a terrible person.

Wow reading this thread, all I can say is Russia is wack; I'm not ever going there if I don't have to. They're obviously all still brainwashed by their government if 85% oppose same sex marriage. Let them wallow in their own shit while we, the rest of the sane world, move forward.

Obviously boycotting is not a desired alternative.

It will be exciting to see how this will all pan out...

1. American Skier wins

2. He/She talks about Russia and their homophobic policies

3. Russia is offended

4. Russia propaganda ministers work their magic

5. Cold war II

6. WWIII

So far it is somewhat clear that the Russian government isn't 100% educated about human rights. Either that, or they want to bring up ideas about laws that they feel strongly believe in that other countries, like the U.S. for example, don't believe in. This was post-twentieth century, after America was highly against same-sex marriage during the civil rights movement. Before anyone judges me, I am straight, I fully support LGBTQ rights, and I'm proud.

Example:

Note, this was when the South was segregated and were bigots. Also, they perceived homosexuality as a sickness.

It just really pisses me off that they hide behind the "we don't want the propaganda" bullshit. Here in North America, I've never seen anything that is trying to convince me to be gay. This is a straight up hate for another group of people. This shows why they will never be a successful country. They don't care about people that don't agree with them.

Look at my post above your comment. It shows an informational video warning teenage boys about homosexuals. Although I found that video wrong, they released that video in the 1950s. The video was also hateful to the LGBTQ community, back when African-Americans were being lynched in the South and the government didn't give a damn about segregation. Also, what you're elaborating on is about the Russian government, not the people who live in Russia.

Did you, or did you not, read the entire thread? The majority of people who commented in this thread, including myself, are supporting LGBTQ rights. Does it make us one of the LGBTQ? Hell naw. All we want is human equality for everyone in this world. There are members of the LGBTQ community, and don't forget supporters, are being tortured, humiliated, and slandered in Russia as we are posting in this thread. I hope that the UN have heard about this law, and I hope that the IOC revokes Russia of their privileges so that they can't host the Olympics in 6 months.

Yeah, we will just not have the Olympics in Russia because of this. Everyone is pulling out (haha, make jokes). 6 months to go, we can just throw this together somewhere else real quick...

You are fucking moron.

actually, by default It would go to the last host city. in this case, Vancouver. completely plausible, I'm fact the Olympics have been boycotted before.

There are at least twenty countries that have allowed same-sex marriage. If Russia has their privileges revoked by the IOC, then they can't host the Olympics, then it would have to be hosted in the previous spot that the Olympics were held in in 2010, which is Vancouver, plain and simple. Also, the dicision is in the hands of the IOC, not the people. No one yet has pulled out yet.

You're a bigot.

Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, homosexuality wasn't the root cause of all the problems you just mentioned? Probably not. I really hope you can find it in you to do so one day. When that day comes, return and read this: plenty of people attempt suicide after losing a straight and unfaithful significant other, and many LGBTQ individuals attempt suicide due to their marginalization worldwide. The fact that it was a woman his wife left him for is irrelevant. AIDS, believe it or not, is not strictly found in or spread people who identify as LGBTQ. Yes, it is believed that the first human case was found in a homosexual man, and the rate of HIV incidence is higher among the LGBTQ community, but this might not be the case if the stigma against said community were not present as the virus/disease were taking hold. The spread could have been significantly prevented if people didn't fear admitting they had contracted HIV identified them as LGBTQ.

I've got plenty more to say on the subject as an ally but I think that's all you're worth for now. Good day, sir.

I believe that the actual policy is that if the games cannot be held in the host city (i.e. because of a natural disaster or for whatever other reason), they can move them to the previous host city. Vancouver has all of the facilities, the procedures are in place and everyone's already put this show on before.

The biggest issue in terms of logistics would be making sure that the appropriate PEOPLE are available. Running an olympics takes a huge amount of manpower around the entire area, Vancouver required an ungodly number of volunteers. You need security forces, a large number of contractors to set up various campuses and event hubs.

I honestly do not doubt for one second that they would be able to manage it. Even if the city had to shell out piles and piles of money, the net benefit to the city is astronomical, and Canada, BC and Vancouver would find a way to make it happen. Consider that Vancouver spent insane amounts upgrading the highways, building an entire speed train line, building new rinks and facilities and upgrading the alpine venues to host this less than 4 years ago. To get all of those benefits again and not have to spend any of the capital cost, it's an absolute no brainer.

There's actually a petition here to do this: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/international-olympic-committee-ioc-relocate-the-2014-winter-games-to-vancouver-2

Now, let's be clear, this is almost certainly not going to happen. It's about a 1 in 100 chance of this actually happening. But I really wish it would, because honestly, I don't want Russia to see a penny of the revenues this Olympics is going to generate. If you want to hit them where it hurts, hit them in the wallet. This would be the biggest "fuck you" possible, and it would be totally justified.

That petition is actually a good thing. To be honest, there are six months left until the Olympics. If somehow the IOC decides to revoke the hosting privileges of Russia, that would positively impact everyone except Russia. Like you said, if Vancouver ends up hosting the Olympics again, then it would be a miracle if they end up pulling off all of the construction of the Olympics in less than a year.
