Lets talk about racial discrimination. (is it bad in all instances?)

Recently a model of Indian decent was fed the response from a modeling agency that there would be "limited" due to her not being of caucasian decent...

horrible? or simply the way it is?

"The Australian media recently featured a story of an allegation of race discrimination in the modeling industry.[1] Ms. Kema Rajandran, a beautiful young Indian model, complained to news services about a modeling agency in Perth that advised her that her work would be limited because of her race. In an email to Ms. Rajandran, the coordinator of the agency said,

We think you are very photogenic and would be suitable for our Casting Division. … Please note however that as you are of non-Caucasian heritage your work opportunities in Perth would be extremely limited.[2]

Now, there is no doubt that this is race discrimination, or at least an indication that Ms. Rajandran can expect to encounter race discrimination in her future attempts to book modeling work in Perth. Evidently offended by this news, Ms. Rajandran told the Australian media that she plans to speak out against the agency (and in fact was already doing so, by complaining to the media about the matter in the first place).

In response, the manager of the modeling agency adopted the don't-shoot-the-messenger defense, arguing that the agency was just being honest with Ms. Rajandran about her prospects in the Perth modeling industry. "This is just ridiculous," the manager told the media. "I don't see that this is race related. If we don't feel that she's going to secure work in the Perth market … then we tell [her] about it. We have the liberty to give an honest opinion."[3]"

a short excerpt to get the shit storm rolling.

hey, just cause people in australia dont find indians attractive doesnt mean shes being discriminated against

i mean i prefer redheads and russians to black girls and thats not racially motivated is it?

If the market/mass populace in Australia doesn't want to see Indian models than why should they put money up to promote her

eh, i don;t think it's as much discrimination as much as it is what sells. It's not like some indian chicks are going to start appearing in budweiser ads. Plus, the modeling agency can hire who it wants to. I think the letter was in the models best interest, she just can't cope with society.

honestly, i thoroughly enjoy discriminating against all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons, but race is a stupid reason.

now, there's the problem of most people seeing any form of even pointing out the difference between races as racism. racism is hateful. if there is no hate intended, that's not racism. blatant ignorance, ehhh, might be racism but is probably just stupidity. i've seen enough of the human race to know that it'll never get over the issue, and unless racism is hurting me directly, i usually ignore it.

telling someone they might not have the same opportunities as someone else because of their race is a fact of life, and a simple warning. some people just need to suck up the fact that other people will discriminate against them for things beyond their control.

Race discrimination is wrong, but like what a lot of other people said for businesses it is about what sells. It doesn't necessarily have to do with race, but in this case it does. For example I am attracted to Caucasian women, and would rather look at Caucasian models. Does that make me a racist? I don't think it does. And like somebody else said, they prefer redheads: maybe a company would hire a redhead over a brunette or blonde simply for business purposes. Does that make it wrong too?

It sucks either way, and I'm not trying to defend it. However you have to be able to see both sides I suppose.

you are beginning to arrive at the conclusion i was hoping someone would reach.

the company is not inherently "racist" if anything the average consumer is "racist" although IMO its more a matter simple discrimination. which is something we all do countless times a day, for a variety of reasons.

the part i cant stand is people playing the victim racism card if things do not go their way, or are looking for a way out of something or looking for sympathy.

I'd say the majority of society is well past having racist views and judge people primarily on how they act. maybe im just an optimist.

Hello chaps I see this disgruntle and i would just like to sit in the wagon and watch. So i will add this debacle to My Threads.
