i rarely see threads that really talk about punk on this board , i have no idea who is all even into here ...

what newer bands do you think are actually putting out solid cds these days ?

What cds have been listening to alot lately (older or newer)

lately i think The Gaslight Anthem have been one of the most solid newer bands out there with every release (the newest 59' sounds kinda sucks...) , Another band that i've recently been all about are the Loved Ones , I'm really not sure those guys can make a bad song .

i believe that the 3 best "newer" punk bands are the flatliners, strike anywhere, and the sainte catherines, check em out

I really dont think there are to many punk bands out right now. bad religion and pennywise are the closest to it. but if u wanna listen to some good punk look up Dead kennedys, Minor threat, sex pistols, fugazi, guttermouth, misfits, and there are alot more good ones from late 70s to early 90s

stiv bators died

iggy pop got clean

people starting whining

creativity plummeted

it came back

creativity plummeted

now it's very stagnant with a few little flourishes here and there

lord almightly please dont tell me you think Strike Anywhere is good. theyv turned into one of those bands all the preppy girls love. its aweful

It's been sort of hard to find any new punk bands. As said above, it's kind of died out, along with grunge, classical, big band swing, and a bit of ska. Maybe there are tons of new bands out there, but they're staying too low to find. On the other hand, I think indie is going to make a comeback- I keep finding more indie bands than major labels.

true story, i hope punk makes a comeback, because its rly pissing me off when ppl are like my favorite punk bands are fall out boy, some other emo band, and lets go with panic at the disco

panic at the disco cant even tell time

there is no such this as 9 in the afternoon

ive been listening to alot of folk and protest punk lately.

the most mainstream being Against Me!

but check out

mischief brew

Defiance, Ohio

The Men They Couldn't Hang

Billy Bragg etc etc.

you guys are not looking hard enough. punk is not dead , nor never will be as long as there is stuff to sing about .

if you guys are out of the loop, some of the newer bands ( really not that new either..) that have been absolutely putting out solid stuff these days are :

The Loved Ones

http://www.myspace.com/thelovedones

Bouncings souls ( anyone who listen to punk should know these guys..classics.)

Gaslight Anthem
http://www.myspace.com/thegaslightanthem

Whatever It Takes

http://www.myspace.com/fistfulofrevolution

Lagrecia

http://www.myspace.com/lagreciamusic

The Briggs
http://www.myspace.com/thebriggs

The Ergs!

http://www.myspace.com/theergs

The Grabass Charlestons http://www.myspace.com/grabasscharlestons

The Measure(sa)

http://www.myspace.com/themeasuresa

those are just a few of the newer i guess you could say punk bands , give em' a listen !

also not that i'm trying to stick up for them , but i really dont think panic at the disco ever really ever tryed to be considered a punk band ... i mean can anyone actually show something that did ?

i mean take them what there for , they make decent pop/rock songs if you're into that , the only reason they got tagged with trying to be punk is probably because their stuff was sold at hot topic (pretty fucking far from punk too...) .

people take putting music into certain genres way to seriously to the point they get angry over it , if its good music just listen to it , it shouldn't matter if its punk or not .

green day, blink-182 etc -- they're pop punk, not real punk.

if you want real punk you gotta get into some like

bomb the music industry

ramones

rancid

NOFX

dead kennedys

etc.

nowadays, ska and punk are merging.

Ska and punk together are perfect. One of my favorites is Big D and the Kids Table but they arent new at all. I agree with the Flatliners being a good new ska punk band.

there are seriously so many fucking terrible third wave ska bands its out of hand , there are some good ones , but not too many ..

old green day (before they started dressing like my chemical butt love) can be considered punk, although it was never really all that hardcore.

I like old A.F.I., the Misfits, the Distillers, Anti-Flag, TSOL, Death By Stereo, The Unseen and some others

it's not really punk (in fact last album was boarderline emo kinda) but for some good, possibly epic rock album, you should get the new Brand New album. it's soo good. A change from the other stuff for sure.

DK

sex pistols

Generation X

minor threat

black flag

dag nasty

circle jerks

adsolents

the clash

bad religion

the ramones

yeah i know they are mainstream, never said they weren't. but they're real punk bands. nowadays when people think punk they think of pop-punk because good punk right now is hard to find.

and to talk about politics: yeah, i'm a conservative. do you know how far left the ENTIRE music industry has gone? nowadays almost every band has some song with something negative about a)our president, b) the war, or c) the republican way of thinking in general, unless its like jesus music. if i go by the political views and messages of the bands and their music, i would have a very small and selective playlist.

no, i don't agree with a lot of the messages in punk music, but it's fucking awesome. it's too good not to listen to just because i may not poltically agree with it.

well there are obviously some songs, such as the one you mentioned, that i wouldn't be so keen on listening to. but not ALL songs are like that. i guess i'm just partial to the less-political punk songs.

i live in such a liberal environment, that messages in music barely effect me anymore. i can't change the music industry and the political views of the majority of bands out there, so i'm not gonna fight it. i'll accept it as art and enjoy what i can.

i really don't feel like arguing with you in yet another thread.

but basically from your point of view, republicans have no place in media at all. especially not in television or music.

a republican liking the beatles or dylan is hypocritical too, right? cause we can't recognize musical genious just because their political messages mask it.

i like music. musicians like the democratic party. shit sucks, but doesn't mean i'm going to stop listening to it.

Punk has made me more of a liberal. I was talking to a kid who loves it though and he is a full on republican. I think its possible to like the music for how it sounds and not its message. The thing punk rock has really done is made me hate religion.

Drew, are you a punk? (just curious)

Punk is political by being anti-political. They are not liberals, not conservatives; they represent a complete rejection of that method of control. Punk is about being free from the establishment. Its about rethinking about our lives, breaking the cycle of fashion, popularity and start thinking for ourselves. Its about breaking away from the dogma. That means religion, government, police, media and associations.

I sickens me when I hear: yeah I like punk, I listen to NoFx, green day, AFI, ect..." That is not punk, that is pop. Those bands are media controlled, they make cool beats and dumb lyrics so everyone can enjoy. This is were people make money. Clothing companies payed researchers to develop lines of clothing to make profits by predicting the next big thing. Guess what rap is now, it is the same old crap like what happend in the 1990's.

get a life yo, seriously. no one really cares, including me, that i like punk rock... except for you.

i can't have this conversation with you, because it's not a conversation. it's you attacking me with no basis of argument. aren't liberals supposed to be accepting of differences and freedom of expression? look who's leaning to the right now...

see you in hell, bro.

oh snap

this thread got gnarly.

I would like to add agent orange to the list, it's not been mentioned yet.

drew i was going to try and stay out of this but how the fuck could u think of dead kennedys as a nowaday punk? dude u rly need to stop acting like u know a lot about punk because ur just trying to start a e fight, leave the girl alone for Christ skae

DOA is sick, just got a sick burned CD from one of my co-workers whos a big punk fan. Dead Kennedys and screeching weazel are pretty dope to.

OK. I stopped reading the above argument because one side in particular is not getting it. At all.

Afton, I acknowledge the fact that you say that ALOT of bands and music out there these days have tended toward what most would (and love to) classify as "liberal". This does not, in any way, associate it with punk. God no. You know the only reason they are doing it is to cash in on the vogue image of psuedo-caring and passion for community and environment. Most of those bands couldn't care less what actually happened, as long as they get the paper. Thereby there is a distinct difference between punk and the rest. The way I tell is by using (it sounds hippyish) my intuition, my moral intuition I guess. I guess by listening to punk for so long, I can tell. Sometimes I get it wrong. But like Drew says, don't go saying you listen to punk, when you cannot recognise this division, it's a very important division I think. I sound completely prude here I know, but it needs to be said.

There is one song that completely explains what I mean, and of course it's by the old faithful, Propagandhi:

Rock for Sustainable Capitalism:

I fuckin’ love that one rock video where that fucking jack-ass mohawked millionaire prances around by far the worst sausage party on earth, where by mere chance he’s caught on film shaking hands with an incredibly diverse collection of patriotic skins. I like the message it sends: With a Rebel™ yell, Just Do Exactly What You’re Told. One million douche bags can’t be wrong? “When did punk rock become so safe?” You’ll excuse me if I laugh in your face as I itemize your receipts and PowerPoint your balance sheets. I hear this year’s Vans Warped Tour is “going green!” I guess they heard that money grows on trees. Hope they ship all those shitty bands overseas like they did the factories. Music’s power to describe, compel, renew … It’s all a distant second to the offers you can’t refuse. Anyone remember when we used to believe that music was a sacred place and not some fucking bank machine? Not something you just bought and sold? How could we have been so naïve? Well, I think when all is said and done, just cuz we were young doesn’t mean we were wrong. And I’ll rock back and forth on this two-bit hobbyhorse ’til she splinters and gives way. I’ll tend the flowers by her grave. And whisper her name. If anyone out there understands can I please see a show of hands just so I know I’m not insane? Ever get the feeling you been played? Well, that’s rock for sustainable capitalism and you know, we may face a scorched and lifeless earth, but they’re accountable to their shareholders first. That’s how the world works.

Well said. Punk definetly does not subscribe to any political side, thats for sure. To politicize people or anything is to trivalize their integrity and reduce them to a commodity without feeling or purpose. This is so far from what punk holds dear, yet in being so, this is also what makes punk "political" - its forced into it by convention. Total bullshit.

And Drew, you and I have very similar music tastes I think.

punk and indie are so hot right now, especially in my area. i personally am a huge fan of pop-punk as well. blink-182 was my favorite band for a long time, and i like green day a lot to. modern punk is quite different then punk even just 15-20 years ago. for modern punk check out bands like "four year strong" they're real good

just because i'm not a great big twenty year old like you doesn't mean that i'm a sheltered, helpless, conformist fuck. get over yourself! you don't know the first thing about me, so stop pretending and making assumptions. yo, you always make it personal. you may disagree with me, but you present it in such a way that makes you look immature. why don't you try to respectfully reconstruct your hate, and maybe people would listen to you.

it makes me laugh whenever you make a comment about my parents. because if you knew them, you would be thinking veryyyy differently.

dude what does it matter if she understands it or not? its music. something that we all enjoy. punk rock is about alot of thing the sex pistols are anger and hate of the queen and society. dead kennedy are political. black flag is anger. and descendents are the funny band that started pop punk. so srsly get a life. its music something everyone enjoys

one: you're rediculous. and i was close enough.

two: i'm not taking it personally, i'm not crying to my mommy and telling on you, but anyone can plainly see that you personally attack me. just shut up. you don't know me!

three: yeah, there is a clash. i know, i never said there wasn't. but the whole entire media clashes with my beliefs, so what can you do?

four: just shut your mouth already. i've formed my OWN opinions in the new york city area. i have had MORE than enough exposure to the liberal points of views and i personally don't agree.

five: punk is just music. the more political messages and undertones are not.

Wonderboy +karma.

hey buddy i dont mean to be a ass, but i dont rly think u understand the concept of punk. Punk was created as a anti establishment music and because it was easy to make, in the begining most of them would just make it in there basement, it was so ppl could not be so sheltered and open there music experiances. as far as i can see she just likes the music. i dont see what ur problem is. from what i can see ur kind of a poser

hahahahahha, i was put on pills since then and i see things more clearfully, i also remebering saying how punk u were in that same thread. yeah i did read ur first post. but u dont rly need to be a dick do u? and music is music sure most of it has a meaning but man go with the flow. i love punk more than ne thing and when i c someone that actually knows some of the punk band names it just makes me happy to know more ppl are learning about them. ur 21 correct and i am 17 if u remember the late 90s and early 2000s u would have known punk was almost gone, no one rly remembered punk rock. and i dont understand y u think punk rockers have to listen to just punk. do u know who sid vicious favorite artist was?

it was david bowie
