Lets put politics aside...

all right guys, i know most of you wont read this entire thing i am posting but for those few of you that do, i think you will find it quite moving, whether or not you agree with everything. i really am sick and tired of all these damn politicians, cant stand either one of the the potential presidential candidates. none of us fully grasp the magnitude of the situation we are in right now, but it is much bigger than arguing back and forth between right and left. granted this is from one source and yadayada... so it is one persons opinion, but i do feel it is a quite well thought out and educated piece. discuss...

please guys lets not make this another thread of bashing each other back and forth over whom we think will destroy this country slower, set aside your political ties and lets step back a minute, look at the big picture, and lets have some educated conversation.

i fear that this is too much to ask based on seeing the other political threads

This guy is missing something very very huge. We're not going into a great depression because there aren't any major superpowers with competing systems of social and governmental function. That is, in the 1930's there was real communism, real marxism, real socialism, and real facism all as perfectly acceptable replacements for capitalist democracy. People at the time really thought that the great depression was the end of liberal capitalism and western society. Facism and communism were on the rise as these new and exciting forms of government.

Today we now know facism sucks and communism sucks worse. You might point out china is communist but they arent actually communist. Its pretty much accepted globally by all the superpowers that free market trade and capitalism as well as a democratic government is the way to go. By those means, we won't see the same type of despair and readiness to give it all up as we did in the great depression.

very valid post. you can't deny that the country is moving more towards socialism though. maybe not "true" socialism but definitely a shift towards it. whether you agree with it or not there is a shift.

i would disagree. Its true that adopting universal healthcare might seem like a shift towards socialism and it would be. I think that if we were to adopt universal healthcare, we would be creating one isolated socialist element but to say that our society as a whole has shifted even the slightest bit towards it would be false. I say that because though we are employing certain programs that are socialist in nature, our fundamental and underlying mindset be it at the federal level, corporate, or small town usa, hasn't budged a centimeter in that way. Remember, we still do live under a federalist republic not a true democracy. Also, our government only subsidizes programs in which there is a market failure in the private sector, i have yet to see USA brand shoes or USA brand designer hand bags.
