Lens Hoods

I've always used them, and I have them for all of my lenses, but I gotta say they definately are a bitch, especially for just putting your gear in your camera bag. In a time where flare isn't even necessarily a bad thing, I'm starting to wonder if they're even worth it.

Do you use lens hoods?

i do always with my 70-200. my fisheye sorta has a built on hood and i usually do with my 17-40 even though with 7D it doesnt do anything because of the crop sensor. it just makes the lens look sick.

I've honestly always thought they were just there to look cool, they have never really helped me with flares, except maybe on my fisheye, but i wouldn't know, since its permanently on there...

for the first post, if you get a 24-105 lens hood for your 17-40 it seems to do better for a crop sensor

Pretty much. It's necessary on my 70-200, but on my 17-40 it doesn't really do anything other then add some extra protection to the front element (even though thats what the filter is for).

I'd say its only worth it and you have a crop sensor+both lenses. I have the 16-35 in addition to my 24-105, so its what I use

I almost always use lens hoods, but what I do with my 70-200 to fit it in the bag is I unscrew the lens hood, and then put it on backwards, so its covering the lens body instead of sicking out. It only takes a few seconds and this way you don't have to ditch em to conserve space.

they offer good protection to the front element over the filter. i would much rather have a lens hood get banged up than a nice filter. they don't take up very much extra room if you put them on backwards for storage.

this looks even cooler than if it was facing the other way and functioning.

I'm getting a 18-105 and apparently it comes with one, im gonna turn that shit around and go nuts.

what? i said to put them on backwards so they don't take up as much room. why you being sarcastic asshole

On a longer lens they're nice, but anything wider than like 35 and its almost pointless.

I wasnt being sarcastic at all though?

I genuinly think it looks super sick when the hood is scrwed onto the lens backwards, idk why, but it looks sweet, so thats what im going to do.

Its kinda like this.

Same exact gun, you would just rather be holding the second one instead.

see my theory?

good.

I think they do help prevent snow from getting on the glass element if you're shooting in rain/snow. Only thing I can think of being a useful use for lens hoods.

ya they do add additional protection, which is my main reason for using them. you can block light flare with your hand if you choose not to use one, but there really isn't a reason not too

this is a perfect explanation i think because not only does it look cooler, it does the same thing but has its perks to make it a little better...in this case a lens hood may not be effective 100% of the time but the one time for some reason there is an angle or shot that may cause an unwanted flare, it takes care of it
