Lens Filters?

so i went to Killington last week and got a few days of snow and finally a day to film. At the end of the day when i got to see all the shots we got that morning they all has some mad glair and were really whited out. So i was shooting with a t2i 18-55 lens and a glide cam. I had all the setting set right for that light(white balance and ap ) as far as i know but i think the problem is that i need a certain filter to help filter the light off the snow. Any suggestions as far as filters would be much appreciated,
 
i also got a question. I got some money for my birthday, plus some money in the bank. I only have the money for 1 filter(its for a 4x4 matte box so the filters are more expensive.)

What should be my first filter to get? I will eventually pick up more, but what should be my first filter?

Polarized?

ND? if so which ND?

what do you guys think?
 
Do you have a clear filter? Something with zero tint (cheap clear filters aren't clear) that you can put over your lens to protect it? This should come first. If you bump into something while your trying to take a picture, or trip, or fall while skiing, you're going to be glad you had the protection. It's like a condom for your lens.

Then you can look for a polarizing filter. The ND filter will be useful after you learn to reduce glare and set the exposure perfectly.

I still don't have any fancy filters for my digital camera, they start costing a lot very fast. I'll probably pick up a polarizer this summer though.
