Length suggestion on NS

To all-

I think that some of the lenght suggestions that have been given are pretty poor. A guy that weighs 180 and skis mostly pack should not be skiing on a 190. 180 at the MOST. If he's going to take the ski to the pow then by all means, a longer ski might be a good idea. There are so many things that should go into a length suggestion its not even funny, do those of you that suggest lengths even consider how stiff the ski might be, how wide the ski might be, what kind of skier he is, what kind of snow conditions he will be skiing. Not everyone needs a 195 to stomp rediculous airs. I ski with some of the best racers in the country quite a few times a year and a 6' 185 slalom racer will be on a ski in the 160's!!!! If you're not traveling at mach 80 and you arent's skiing in deep, there is no way that a 180lb person would EVER need a ski 190cm long, that's not even a legitimate response to that question. But, this is an open discussion forum, everyone is entitled to thier opinions. But if you should respond, please make it a reputable response, not one that doesn't even make sense.

i've posted some cuestions on lenght, and people had told lots of different things, i'm 168 lbs and 6 or 6'1 tall, and was thinkink about the 1080, probably the 181 cuz i'm a begginer in the park and also do a lot of big mountain. However i think your too hard with what people says, i've apreciated every answer people have given me since they are personal experiences and personal opinions and must be taken like that and not like universal truths.

I assume that anyone who needs to ask what size of ski they need is a beginner (if you're advanced and you can't figure it out then you have serious problems). After that you just take the terrain they're skiing and suggest a size. For the most part it's a question of 'should i get the 171 or the 181'. Usually it's easy to tell if they're 5'10 and plan to ride 50/50 park and pow. Stiffness and other shit doesn't matter to a beginner..they'll get used to what ever noodle they're on.

Don't think just jump.

You guys are entitled to your own opinions and they all deserve to be respected. But I do think that stiffness etc. should matter to a beginner. Why would a begginner want a 2x4, they should have a noodle. And making assumptions is probably not the way to go...but again- your opinions are always valuable. I'm sorry if you all think i'm too hard on people, I just happen to be very opinionated on this matter. I think that when people get a ski in the wrong lenght it can ruin the sport, especially if they're a beginner. They should, if anything, go short! I just had to ge it off my chest- Have good skiing and give as many opinions as you can. Everyone's opinion is worth something, I just wanted you all to know what I think you guys are suggesting is often not correct.

Morbumps: Like I said in the 'Big Guys' thread, some people may need that 'one ski for everything' instead of a quiver. That's why there are skis like the Bandit XX out there. Sure, I live in the Mid-Atlantic. I also go out west once a year and go up to the NE - I don't go enough to warrant buying a 2nd (or 3rd) pair of skis, so I got something that I could use everywhere (which in my case were Dragons). BTW, I don't see you ripping on people that always seem to suggest fatties for everyone...

I weigh 180lbs ride 194s and I ski the midwest. It is really what you feel comfortable with. I like to go super fast, so shorter skis are unstable. I think everyone has thier own needs for a ski and there are too many variables for one to say that members are suggesting too big of a ski. Some of the variables include: skill, type of skiing, weight, height, where they are skiing, size preference, the ski itself, etc.

I weigh 135 lbs. and 5'9'. I ride Dynastar Bigs 191cm Head Mad Trix 181cm and Hart F17's 185cm. Any advanced skier should go around 180 to 185 in the park. You have the stability and speed that increases from the length. I guess you could ski a shorter ski if you are Vinnie D's size and they pay you alot of money to ski on a shorter ski.

Ride whatever the hell length you want, it's your money, two people the same height/weight may be suited to different lenghts, get whatever you want for yourself

that is very true. It's your money, spend it as you wish. I'm just trying to maximize the enjoyment you might get by purchasing the right length....
