Legit Camera

For a still camera, check out the Canon Rebel series, or the Canon G9, G10 (or whatever number they're at now)
For video, Look at the Canon HV30.

if your going still, rebel series for that price you could find one new probably with a kit lens? if you want a decent camera 699 for a refurbished 40D on adorama .com

Rebels are for soccer moms. No one ever believes me but Pentax is the way to go for quality DSLRs for a good price, i own the K10D and its great, the only problem i am starting to notice is graininess at ISO's that other (somewhat more expensive) can handle well. But Rebels are shit, dont bother.

I have nikon d200 im selling soon for about 700 with only 10,000 clicks on it and body in perfect condition

no rebels are for soccer moms, but its cool if he just wants it to shoot with, pentax tho? aint ever seen a ns person rep'n for them!

go xxD class tho (20,30,40,50,5)

How long does it take for people to realize that it's the person, not the camera? I've taken shots on a Canon G7 (point and shoot) that are better than ones taken by a Nikon D200. It's about the composition, the lighting, the subject, the angle, not the megapixels.

Obviously a super-nice camera is a plus, but if you're getting a DSLR the most important part will be the lenses anyway. A low-end camera with real good glass is better than a high-end camera with a shit lens. It's all about price and preference.

Personally I bought a Canon Rebel XS because it was cheap and gets the job done. I also already had a 24-85mm, and the camera came with a 75-300mm. Obviously a much better buy than getting a 40D without a lens.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a rebel. Some of the best pictures I've ever taken were with a Rebel XT and the 18-55 stock lens.
Soccer moms flock to the rebel because it's cheap, but they really aren't all that different from a 40D for example. If all you care about is basic manual controls like shutter, aperture, iso, focus, and white balance, then why the hell not buy a rebel? Especially if you're new to photography and want to learn without breaking the bank. I'd take a rebel over a nikon D40/60 any day.

I guess what i should have said was most of the rebel series (excluding some like the XTI) and the lower Nikons are not good cameras at all. They are usually cheaply made and have a lot less functions. Im not even really basing my opinion on the image quality because truthfully all the sensor technology in most non pro cameras is comparable.
I guess this is where my bias for Pentax comes in. I shoot with the K10D but it feels more like a film camera, it has much controls on the outside instead of searching through menus. Holding it, it has good heft and is covered with a rubberized water seal. These may seem like small things to a first time buyer but when the output is comparable these are the other things to compare in a camera.
And of course as mentioned, there are other factors that need to be considered, but he was asking about cameras. I guess all have to say is really look around at other non Nikon or Canon cameras and if you dont like others you still got the rebel, many people love them.
In my opinion Rebels are not worth the money when theres cameras like Pentax.

thought i'd bring up my question in this thread instead of making a new one.

i'm really thinking about getting the canon hv30.

can someone please link me to an ski edit that was shot with an hv30?

i want to see how it looks.

thats actually a lot better quality than i thought it would be honestly.

maybe i'll save a few bucks and get a 20 instead

me and my fiends are throwing down for either and hv20 or hv30 this summer. we were kinda leaning towards the hv20 so we didnt have to wait to save the money

If you read the title and actual post then you would see that he wants a new/ refurbished camera, and hes looking for ideas. Hes not looking to buy someones old camera.

i shot with an xt and then an xsi for a while and i got some money shots with them, that being said, my 40d rapes all of them
rebel series are for soccer moms if you shoot on full auto but they have enough manual settings to take good pictures

if its for filming just skiing get an hv30 if your filming skiing and other stuff like skateboarding/freestylrolling get a vx1k
