Let's say i am to make a skimovie, non-profit and i wish to put in some music, popular music from real record labels, how do i legally obtain rights to using this music ?
(PS are the laws around this the same in Europe as in US, since im from EU)

Contact each Band and or Producer. They will want to know how you plan to distribute the movie and how big your audience is. Also your budget. Then they will charge you accordingly. Its up to them what they want to charge per song.

If you don't charge for the movie then you should be ok, i know DOS didn't get rights for any song in their movie last year because i guess if you sell under like 500 then it costs the producer/label more money to sue you then they loose from you not buying rights.

that all depends though. For some songs it can run you a few hundred dollers even if your only using it for a movie that will sell 500. Its kinda a catch 22, get a big name band and they might not find it worth going after you but if they do your fucked. Pick a smaller band, if they find out chances are they will go after you so they can get some money but you might be able to avoid it.

Also if your going after sponsorship money from a company having everything being legal is way more legit. Otherwise your sponsor cant use any of it for their own promotions or they get in trouble.

i plan on distributing within friends and the small freeski community in belgium, so lets say, max. 50 and maybe youtube, so im planning on contacting indie record labels for permits and more main stream songs through sabam, this is the belgian society for protection of artists, so, thanks for the feedback, i learned a lot....
