Learning vs. Sucking

Hello Newschoolers Brethren,

Ive never posted a thread on here (as you can see Im quite new) but I've been following NS for a while without an account and have been into skiing for a few years now.

Three years ago my friend showed me Revolver (which Im suprised not many people seem to like) and two days later I traded in my snowboard for a pair of Volkl Alleys. It was the best decision I've ever made. I dont get to the hill as much as I used to because I go to school in Mass (I lived in Maine) so I'm still learing.

Heres my problem. Ive been reading the "How Good do you Have to be to Wear Saga" thread and it got me super bummed out. It was all about how people who suck wear Saga and Level 1 and all that type of shit. I dont think anybody sucks at skiing, we just havent had as much time to learn how. Does the fact that I'm still learing how to ski or the fact that I still shit my pants whenever I start to lose control make me less of a "skier"? Should I hang up my Saga and TAF until I can cork 3 or do switch-ups or huck backies?

I think we've gotten really misconstrued in the idea that people "suck" when really we're just learning to progress. You were all there once.

Commence with the OP's a gaper-nerd-douche-hippy-whatever-

Who cares. If someone goes out of their way to hate on someone else's skiing, they probably aren't worth your time of day anyway. Just have fun. You don't have to have a certain skill level in order to wear quality outerwear, everyone experiences the elements the same, regardless of skill level.

If you always worry about what the other people on the hill think of you you're not going to progress anyway. Fuck em just do your own thing and as long as you're having fun thats what counts.

Absolutely not. Wear whatever the fuck you want. That thread was posted by an 11 year old who spends more time looking in the mirror than skiing. The core of our community doesn't give a shit what each other look like, it's the 13 year olds on Afterbangs who do.

You have to remember that NS is made up of many kids still in junior high. I've met lots of kids that rip on people for their gear if they aren't "good". But i've never met a GOOD skiier over the age of 16 that actually gives a damn.

Just ignore them and have fun skiing and wear whatever you want.

Dude who cares. I suck in the park. Ive been skiing my whole life and all my friends and I are "expert skiers" but we are all bunz in the park. We just go to have fun and it doesn't matter what you wear or what some 12 year old thinks.

The best way I found I rapidly got better was watching videos and movies on the people who I wanted to ski like and trying to copy what they did. Another thing is to just go out and ski with people you want to be like or are better than you, you then copy how they do runs with speed and air time. For me I found when I was just skiing around for fun jumping off small airs and stuff i would jump and be stiff as a board then I would watch videos of pros doing smaller stuff and found its more fun and looks better to tuck and do shiftys and grabs. Its been super helpful you don't have to do the all the big tricks and jumps but the little things can effect how you look and feel skiing and eventually it will help to progress into bigger tricks like when exactly to start a rotation or flip off a jump.

I think that I speak for much of the community in saying that most of the hate is not about skill level, its about people not knowing the etiquette of the park. The hate comes from frustration when people do annoying things like ruin jumps, cut you off, etc. This frustration is mostly towards people of a lesser skill levels, however, it is not limited to that group. Anyone who does that is annoying, however it is easier for skiers to blame little kids and people who are just starting. As long as you know the etiquette of the park, you have every right to be there. Don't let them tell you your not good enough to wear what you want, they are just being assholes.

Just ride man. People that put others down for shit that doesn't actually matter to them are dicks anyway. Just ignore those assholes.

I'm not trying to group all younglings in the same category but its mostly them that hate on others for having good gear and not being the greatest. So who gives a fuck about some kif thinks about you? Just do your own thing h and have fun

Completely agree with the point you are making OP.

People can't become "good" unless given time to progress, and if anyone shits on someone for trying to progress, they are being unreasonable.

op, wear whatever the fuck you want. People get the negative attitude towards kids who aren't good at park skiing and are wearing saga and so on for a reason.

That reason being: Seeing these kids dressed in their saga outwear every day just jumping off lips and never trying new things. These kids are just posers and yes I think they look retarded if they dress like that.

But anyone who at least tries to get better can wear whatever the fuck they want. There is a difference between you op and those gapers. They ski through the park to look cool but you actually want to get better and learn. Anyone who tries things has my respect even if its just grabs.

From my experience the best skiers take the hardest bails, they try new shit and get better.

Those saga wearing gapers will end the season the way they started it: Boosting knuckles and jumping off lips.

In short: OP wear whatever you want, there is nothing wrong with wanting to have steezy outwear. Just don't be poser and fucking send it!!!

just do you. learning is what makes skiing fun. having some new goal to try to achieve each day is what motivates a lot of us to keep going. i think if you stop trying to learn, then skiing would slowly lose its appeal. so if you equate learning to sucking, and everyone is constantly learning, then i guess we all suck in our own way.

yay for sucking! just keep having fun dude.

If you go to the hill wanting to learn to hockey stop and you leave knowing how to hockey stop or at least attempting one then you don't suck you just are still progressing. But if you go to the hill and dont make an attempt to progress or have fun then you suck

As you spend more time in the sport you will learn this:1) Beginerers don't care what they look like, they just want to ski.

2) Intermediates worry a LOT about how they look.

3) Experts doen't care what they look like, they just want to ski.

This can relate to everything in life, just go out there and have a good time, what others think does not matter.

Jeez when i was learning and progressing was the time when i had the most fun for sure! Before i got too caught up in what i looked like and got super competitive. I have thankfully gotten out of that stage too and realized its just all about having fun!

And every newschooler on here in some way or another is still learning, whether that is faster, new tricks, gnarlier lines or just learning to slide a rail. It's all the same and the people who actually hate on that stuff are either 1. insecure about their skiing skills 2. straight up dicks or 3. joking haha.

I remember when i was just learning i posted a video and it got soo much hate for what i looked like, stupid tricks exct. now i look 5 years later and just laugh haha

The only reason people complain about gapers wearing that kind of stuff is that it use to be an identifier that you were part of the underground "newschool" movement. Back when I had my moss saga suit from 08/09 (?) no one at my mountain had ever seen it let alone heard of it, and when I would be somewhere and someone would notice or point it out we would both know each other were probably on NS and very into the park scene. Now though you go to a hill and 3/4 of the little kids and gapers in the park are wearing saga because it became cool thanks to all the cool underground skiers wearing it. Same thing happened with jiberish, they use to make like 10 of each size hoodie and everything sold out in a matter of minutes, but now they make everything in much larger quantities (same with saga) which means way more people have the opportunity to buy it. At the end of the day, as long as you are happy with your gear thats all that matters, but you will more or less be fingered as a gaper poser if you can barely hit a rail/jump and are fully kitted out in "cool park skier" attire.

i wear saga because it is big and stylish and warm. compared to others... i suck at skiing but i dont care and i have fun and thats the only thing that matters to me.

k then.

The end of last year i could barley rail slide, i felt really stupid in the park. but then this year i stopped caring about what I couldnt do and focused on what I could do. now this year I can fs 270 off and bs 270 off and Im working on 270s on. I also thought id never land a 360, but this year Im stomping 5s. I guess what Im trying to say is don't worry about what you look like to the other kids on the hill, just focus on learning your stuff because chances are they're doing the same thing. Keep goin OP

Yeah but its not because your wearing saga that your that kid who think hes cool and look at others' style. I wear saga because i love their stuff and im having a greatt time every time i go skiing. Anyway i dont even know how to 360 or 270 out.

Honestly I just wear what I can afford. It doesn't matter what you look like on the hill. No need to waste money on the latest greatest outerwear, just buy something that works

Skiing is all about your passion for the sport and the enjoyment you get out of it, if you remember that you will never have a bad day on the hill.

Wear whatever you want and just go out and have a good time, thats what skiing is all about. I think the people that will say crap about you because of what you wear will never stop anyways, even when you start to throw backys they will still find something else to bag on, its all about how they are trying to make themselves sound pro. Just forget that stuff and have fun!

Yeah honestly Saga has become such a big company it doesn't matter. I see 8 year olds with their Saga going off of side jumps. Wear what you want man I honestly think will give you shit for it.

I've seen so many people who suck that wear saga that it honestly means nothing. It's just a brand, you don't have to be a professional sprinter to have Nike track spikes or be a pro football player to wear Under Armour anything. People are just stupid, you can wear whatever you want bro

No one sucks. However, there are people who are stupid. For example, people who stand or sit right in the landing of a jump are just plain stupid

who cares? the people that make a big deal about what you wear should just be happy somebody new to the sport is putting their money into the industry

If your worried about if people making fun of you. Chuck in your earphones full blast pay no attetion to anyone else signal your drop in and fuck em, thats what i use to do
