Learning tricks on water ramps is NOT skiing

Without water ramps skiing wouldn't be anything at all becuase there wouldn't be many skiers. They'd all have broken necks sittin at home not skiing at al

I agree that it's more hardcore to do it without ramping first. And for those kids without the opportunity to ramp, then sure, they deserve respect for giving 'er.

But, if someone was given the option of learning a double on a ramp and declined in favor of the more dangerous option, then I don't know if that deserves more respect. It's kind of like saying that you would respect a formula one driver more if he raced without a seatbelt and helmet, sure it's more hardcore, but what's the point?

spriggs can double flip though.......its like ten times sicker then kangaroo......look at ATA edit of the US open at copper

Look man, we all freeski, the operative part of the word is free. We are all out to have fun and progress. Some of us take progression more seriously than others. Some of us have other hobbies that *gasp* we put before skiing, and cant really afford to get fucked up trying gnarly inverts on Midwest ice. If people arent free to progress in any way they want, why the fuck even bother, you might as well set out poles and have people take certain turns into park jumps. Jesus why do people have to try to change what we do?

You're totally right. Skiing is about pushing your body beyond its limits, even if that means getting so broken off you cant walk for the rest of your life. Right...

yea and ur super cool man! thats why jons the best in the world and ur not! i guess doing a sw dub off a 70 foot jump isnt skiing is it? can you please tell me how going off a snow jump isnt skiing? so what if you hit water ramps! when it comes down to it he is not doing it on water and claiming it,he claims it once he has landed it on snow! its still skiing!

Lots of pros on NS...kind of a cool thread actually.

I'm not real into the perfect park stuff and training on water ramps, but I don't have a problem w/ it either.

Spriggs if it helps your skiing progress then why not use water ramps? would you rather Jon break his neck trying a Kang on snow first try? or anyone for that matter...

yeh and while where at it shit Sliding rails isnt skiing either , and I guess well skiing switch that must not be skiing either.

its good to learn shit on water ramps, but it still isnt skiing. nor is an urban rail, thats grinding or sliding, not skiing.

Yo i got to agree with dowlabeast doing tricks off likle a wall and stuff helps with at least the basic form and helps me prepare fo wen i do it on the mountain.

13 years old= jibbin

i just thought about that thread from a few month´s ago: does anybody remember that "if the pro´s had their own forum..what would their threads look like" or sth like that?

well now we have one (:

props to jon for being on ns now it´s even sicker than it was :)

I couldn't find it but i think the best point in here being made was someone saying comparing hitting water ramps to batting practice... think about it for a second, yes thats totally true. Why not get as much pratice as possible... I'm sure tons of you go to the gym to strengthen the legs, back, calfs, etc... that would be just as ignorant to say that is gay, and that you respect skiiers that just go out and ski big AK lines to strengthen the legs instead...

As a matter of fact I think more kids should go hit water ramps, or tramps. When you go to parks you know how many kids get hurt from trying basic things that they have no clue on... first 360, 720, backflip, etc... If they had the coaching or training at a water ramp maybe they wouldn't land on the neck or back and mess it up. Ok so that example may be a bit drastic but for bigger tricks like rodeos, misty, cork, etc... if some skiers are to afraid/unconfident to try these on the snow for the first time and take it to the water ramps this could save their season... Isn't the whole point of skiing to have fun, sitting on your couch with your leg in the air isn't fun.

This whole tread sounds like a bunch of skiers that are jealous that they can't do a trick that someone else can.

jesus!! whats up with all the anger? who fucking cares what you think about learning tricks on water ramps, or what anyone else think about it! if some people like it, why not let them.. skiing is skiing as long as its fun;) (in my eyes)

now a real argument has surfaced.

should someone who throws a double wthout ramp training gain more street cred. is it like an onsight free solo in rock climbing. its possible to say that jon had a sort of toprope on his first few rehearsals, like Dean potter on the delicate arch. And IF we decide to make this comparison, should jon be thought of as the sensible one or the one currupting the spiritual side of the sport walker was commenting on(i.e. adrenaline, conditions, circumstances)

lol! hahha, i agree with jon olsson, hitting water ramps in the offseason is the sickest thing ever. I've never done it, but why the fuck wouldnt you if you have the opportunity??!!

Visualizing and landing a trick is two totally different things, i can visualize alot of crazy shit in my head but if i actually tried them I would break myself. So what the JOI had a certain angle takeoff, steep takeoffs are sick. If you have a really safe jump, then you can get more technical and not be in fear of your ending your season because of a poorly designed jump. When you bring physics and all that shit into it is where it gets dope and you can really push the limits.

I was just thinking that - not to geek out about it, but there are a ton of them getting into this thread. Spriggs, Vanular, Matt Walker, John Symms, Jossi Wells & Jon Olsson - newschoolers is major...... haha.

if the spiritual aspect of skiing and devotion to mere rule of thumb is keeping you from progressing yourself to the state that you want to in skiing, then forget it.

... because then the spiritual aspect of skiing is tarnished, in that your progression has been stopped short of what you want to achieve.

Geez i like it pros arguing at each other, bitching about water ramps.

Symms said it best just like batting parctice, why not train to get better? And as someone else said, spriggs you were at SMS all summer, you didint hit any water ramps?

And what happend to skiing for fun, so what if someone trains in water, or snow, it what they want to do to help their skiing. I dont see why this is even a issue, its a part of the sport, everyone can use them, why dont you?

PS i saw you on wild tv or something yesturday spriggs, had a thing on vail and the open, you said it will take a double to win, or a steezy 1080, so looks like double are the new thing

^spriggs does sick doubles(he did one at the open) and judging from this thread he learned them on snow. i ramp myself but think about it, its like using artificial means to scale a rock face, sure you stood on top of that but you didn't get there through pure human physical potential, your experience was tainted because what you did maybe should have been immpossible.

i think there is a chance that spriggs is acting as the Paul Preuss of newschool skiing. pointing out that these incredible things people are doing might be beyond thier natural potential.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Preuss_(climber)

notice that preuss died of a thousand foot fall. i will ramp but you can make your own choice

As long as there is a shark that your jumping over, it is ok to do water ramps.

EYYY!

im just wondering.. what is your point behind this? like why are you against learning tricks not on snow? im not trying to start anything im just curious

i think hes saying that people that learn on water ramps are pussies and their accomplishments due to practice in a minimum injury enviornment should be discredited. in otherwords, hes a hater...

Im' gonna have to say any hatered towards water ramps I have is out of jealousy. I know if I had the cash I would go use them right away. Mainly because where I live our biggest jump is a 20 foot ice cube. (Me and my friend are thinking of hittin the park up one day on skates for our video we do)And I learnd cork 7s and linkins and under flip 5s on this shit, and it does piss me off when someone goes look what I learned on water ramps this summer. But if I had the chance to go use water ramps for the summer you better beleive and go somewhere with some big jumps the winter after and put down some dub flips. So I will say they are kinda bitch, but hell look what foam pits has done for FMX, I think skiing needs them but the only really shitty thing about them is that not everyone can afford to go somewhere for the summer and hit them up.

hey, skiing isnt really a cheap sport compared to bmx or skateboarding or skating. Most people who do it have money. Now, that shouldn't make their accomplishments any less if they have had better resources. Ability should be judged on a flat line not comparativelty.
