both, eventually you'll want to play stuff that might be too complex to play with just a pick, but use a pick to begin with.

as far as practicing goes, dont be to hard core about it in the begining or else you get mad frusterated. just pick it up when you have the urge to.

 
finger picking sounds awsome and its pretty easy. like the kinda stuff u play on acoustic and classical guitars.
