Hey guys, Im in the process of teaching myself how to play the piano. Well, thats not really the right phrase, "teaching= Copying tutorials on youtube. I dont have the money to throw down for lessons...

Any avid piano players on NS got any tips for a beginner?

I play many instruments and I always tell people learning a instrument is like learning another language. It takes a lot of time and patience, but you need to truelly love it. Go for it, learn how to read sheets, but also just try to learn songs that you like, it will teach you to play full songs, song structures, chord progression, keys, and make playing fun which is most important. Warning, it can be an auction and cost a lot, you have no idea how much money I've spent...

I started "playing" the other day, and Im incredibly dyslexic so reading music sheets is hard, but Im hoping that it will come in time.

just like skiing, u need practice and commitment. its awesome playing a full song off by heart. id recommend to keep your phone away if you really want to nail down a song. good luck

Sweet man! And like the guy above I've played many instruments. And picked the piano up two summers ago. I taught myself at first, took some lessons by my moms choice and hated them so don't worry your not missing out on much. Some tips though is to start with songs in which both hands move at the same tempo. It gets really tricky when their going at different speeds. If you have questions PM me! And like they said choose songs you like, it'll be much better that way and you'll actually want to learn them.

get some flash cards with the notes on them, and drill drill drill. For learning music, dont just play through it, make sure to rep (repeat) every chunk multiple times, then put those chunks together. Otherwise, you'll just skim over mistakes and not really learn it. Reps are key.
