Learning Graphic Design Online

I'm just wondering if there are any online programs/websites/forums I should be aware of, specifically step-by-step type stuff, along with any computer programs I should consider downloading/buying. I have access to Adobe products at school, but I'm not sure which ones specifically you use for graphic design (Illustrator?)

Anyone that successfully taught themselves graphic design and is now able to work freelance, your input would be awesome.

just get the programs the whole adobe design suit is what its called comes with everything you will ever need and yes you can learn the programs your self but no one will hire you with out a degree and less likely to get a job unless its from a good school paired with something else like architecture. graphic design doesn't pay shit.. i should know haha but you can do stuff for yourself like forge the shit out of some documents if your into that kinda thing

learn illustrator first. the way the adobe suit was taught to me was:

Photoshop is for editing images that already exist (photos, renders etc)

illustrator is best for creating graphics from scratch (due to vector line)

and indesign is best to layout your work (posters, book etc)

learn those 3 programs and you'll be doing well but the main thing is to know when to use each program for what purpose. youtube is your best bet. the best youtubers have a blog/website as well for you to follow or read articles.

hope that helps

^that. use youtube for any questions i.e. how to remove red eye or how to add a drop shadow.

I have been doing photoshop for years back before they even started with the CS versions of photohop. I have only had one school class on photoshop and that was back in grade 8. everything since has all been from me dicking around in photoshop. any time I just feel like I'm taking the wrong approach on how to do something I'll just google for online little tutorials for random things in the moment I need it. The tutorials are usually really easy to follow. If you just keep plugging away at it you will just eventually get where you want to be.
