Learners License

shit in CO its completeley unrestricted at 17 No curfew or passenger limit. that sucks but driving out there is probably much different than here
 
I think the belief behind the system is, that you learn from driving not reading a book. Knowing the rules only goes so far, people actually have to get out there and drive in order to become safe, good, drivers.
 
I disagree. People who learn to drive young are better drivers. Imagine if you learned to ski at 18. You might get good but likely will not be as good as the kid who has been skiing since they were 5.

Alberta has it right. 14 is a good age to learn, I wouldn't really care if they bumped it up to 15 though. What they should not change is the drivers license at 16. You only really start driving once you are out on you own doing it, and a 16 year old is mature enough to do that in my opinion.
 
oh also to the OP. just read the book! A couple of hours of studying is all it should take. Drivers tests in alberta are stupid easy. The tests (especially the road test) should be harder.
 
For a regular license (B) we also have to drive 30-40 hours before attempting either written test or driving test. It's a pretty good start. If you fuck up, it's a lot more dough and a lot more hours.

I did in the last roundabout before the evaluation station during my first test, going slow but it was frozen to a glimmer so I just slid in there halfway and barely avoided a Volvo coming in. Enough to fail, though, and I got four more driving lessons, $40 a pop, not fun.
 
Alberta's fucking stupid for offering a Learner's license at 14. (although i've been driving illegally since 12...)
 
It just encourages people to be better the first time and it mostly works. The money doesn't go to the government per se, it goes to the schools.

We've established a system that says "If you're not good enough, fuck you, try again at another time."

And it works like a charm, at least in most parts of the country. We do have the countryish sections as well, where kids drive pickups at 11-years-old and cops say "Weeeeelll, kids be kids and all that".
 
also fuck that 14's not too young. its a car not a fucking spaceship... i know ppl at 20 that still shouldn't own their license.
