Lawmaker considers fee for skiers taking Interstate 70

DENVER (AP) - Skiers who use Interstate 70 on weekends could be charged up to $12, or sent $25 checks for staying off the congested highway - under legislation being considered by a state senator.

Denver Democrat Chris Romer says skiers could be charged $5 to $12 per trip for driving up the mountain between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. Skiers who choose to go early or wait until after the rush could get a $25 check in the mail, or a coupon to spend that much at a slopeside restaurant.

Romer says the plan could reduce traffic by 10 percent or more.

He says it's a matter of reallocating money from people who are time-sensitive to those who are price-sensitive.

Genessee Republican Representative Rob Witwer says he's against penalizing people for driving on a road they already own.

I heard that on the radio today, and was like WTF, it doesn't effect me, but it's just sounds crazy, does anyone know how exactly how they are going to find out if your a skier and charge you?

That's just stupid... I just saw this on the news... there's no way to monitor ski traffic vs. normal traffic... stupid... if they do that... I'll find another way around, or just go earlier or later... stupid...

This is mot going to work.

It will cause back up at the tolls just like it would with no fee. also, it will just cause traffic later in the day. Nothing will change.

i cant stand the traffic saturday mornings. I already go up earlier than that, so it'd be fun to get a $25 check in the mail every week. thats like $400 for my whole season. but it's not gonna go through anyway and it wouldn't work.

That's bunk. Why would you want to reallocate money from people who are 'time-sensitive' to those who are 'price-sensitive'? It'll never happen anyway, though.

thats true but then take clear creek canyon to aviod some shit and frontage roads but 285 is like 5 miles south of the 1 70 interchange

Ya that will work fantastically well when every single Colorado resident suddenly becomes a skier who didn't use I-70. "Hey I would love to have a $25 check every month!"

i always take the canyon, it's about the same time either way, but the canyon is way easier on your car's brakes and engine

Why don't they just blow up I-70?  That would be a start to Front Ranger problem in Summit County.   Fees are good, but complete destruction would be better.

haha a politician is fucking getting into skiing? yet more proof colorado is starting to become out of whack. Prices on food go up like 3 bucks every year, tickets go up more, passes go up like 50 a year. Its like the fucking oil companies, they're milking everyone for what they're worth and they can because we keep going, if more of us started supporting smaller mountains and different mtn communities they would take a big hit and finally realize how much everything they do is sheer bull shit!

Maybe move to Cuba since you seem to like the Communism.   Our season pass prices are still probably the cheapest in the world considering what we get.  You realize oil prices went up a lot beacuse of the falling dollar right?  Food and day ticket prices shouldn't effect CO residents, just tourists. How many times do you go and get a 12 dollar burger?  I haven't bought a meal at the lodge since the Coppertop got bought out by Breck and they double their chilli cheese fries prices.  Just get a bagel at Coffee Depot for under 3 bucks or bring sme Ramen.  If everyone started patronizing small resorts the traffic to them would be worse, they would get bigger, raise their prices to maximize profit and evolve into your hated, big-resorts.  They should strenghen our borders with Texas and put up a Berlin-esque wall around Denver if they want to help Summit County.

I can go to Vail, Beaver Creek, Breck, Keystone, or A-Basin from October-June for only $300. As much as it annoys me, I would rather have I-70 bringing in the tourist while I take a different road. It keeps my pass cheap. In the mean time I will continue to take a different road to avoid traffic.

I think a viable option would be to lease 15-20 regional buses from RTD, have them fitted with a ski/snowboard storage system underneath and possibly in the back few rows instead of seats, build a larger parking lot at dinosaur ridge, and have a transfer center in dillon with buses going to each of the summit county resorts provided by the summit county bussing company, i forget its name since i haven't lived there for a few years, summit stage maybe?, and then a bus over the pass to vail/bc. charge 10-15 round trip, kills around 15-20 percent of traffic after a year or two of working out the kinks, no profit, but very little to no loss as well

^or his 5th wife.

Inflation and recession suck.. get used to it though, it'll get worse before it gets better... if it ever gets better.

PS this whole idea is redic. There is no way to monitor it.. it will be thrown out so fast.

The only way they could monitor this is through previous and current season pass sales, then look at the usage for previous years and give everyone an estimate of their cost or credit.  This wouldn't work though because people would argue that about it still.  They really just need a train.  Buses wouldn't work since they don't move enough people vs. cost and would  congest I-70 when it snows.  Also the city's liability insurance would be huge if they were busing a lot of people on I-70 in the winter.

^^^ It would be sick if there were trains the way Europe has them. I lived in Germany for 3 years and used to use the trains all the time. Round trip to Austria for $45. My dad and I used to ski all sorts of sick places and it was really easy to get around.

^yea, a train is probably the best bet.. they could build the track down the middle of the hwy/on the sides where applicable.. still would have to cut a few new tunnels... but it would be a lot easier than adding new traffic lanes..

TIme line for this?? haha.. we'd all probably be 40 to 60 if they started tomorrow.

It would be sick if they could put one across the country side instead of right down the middle of 70. One from CS to Breck to Leadville to Gunnison, even all the way down south. It would be nasty. They would have to do something special for people north of Denver though...

We could only wish. Problem with a track not along the hwy or another train track would be how would they get the equipment and crews out there with ease and low cost? Its unlikely that it would happen either way though.
