get a laptop, but make sure to get a kensington lock for it. laptops can disappear very easily.

get the thin sony laptop, cause it'll be easy to carry to the library and what not, but get an external DVD player and a huge LCD screen for the dorm room so you can watch movies.

Yes laptop for sure... SOOOOO many people have laptops in college and it's definitely an advantage. Most of the time it's impossible to get shit done effectively in your room. Laptop FOR SURE.

get a sony vaio, they're amazing, light, perform good, just watch them cos I bet they'd be easy to steel

I've had good experiences w/ dell laptops, it's what I'm on right now. You can usually get them w/ wireless network cards, and then you can connect to the campuses wireless network, which is very handy.

laptops are great, especially for a dorm room. However generally speaking PCs are litterally twice as good (ie: quicker, more ram etc... everything better) as a laptop of similar value.

ie: Lets say for $1000 you could get a laptop with a celeron processor and a cd/cd-rw combo drive. Now with that same $1000 you could buy a PC with a intel pentium 4 processor and a cd/cd-rw/dvd combo drive. Also the PC would be twice as quick and probably have around 60GB on your harddrive as apposed to a measly 20GB on most laptops

And whats the deal with 'hot man chicken' are you comparing your penis to a chicken? maybe the width of your cock is the size of a chicken's cock

Just JIB it !!

but the portablilty sic is key and i dont think you'll need much power for word processing or even playing dvds, cause my shitty old laptop (just replaced, yea!) could do both, and it was a shitty 450mhz

go desktop, you can get so much more for so much cheaper. and I don't know what college that other guy goes to, but I know one person with a laptop. I thought I'd want a laptop to go work in a park or whatever, but I don't think it's worth it. I'd rather have a better computer

i have both and i like the laptop better...oh well

ok first things first, FROSH means freshman/Sophmore stupid fucking ppl think it only means freshman. now tha that is out of the way get a desktop. you won't be taking your computer to classes belive me. a desktop os so much cheaper. and seeing as how you know nothing about computers (asking about a lap vs. a pc instead of a lap vs. desktop) a desktop can be maintained much cheaper. Don't be stupid and get tricked into thinking a laptop is a better computer b/c it is not. If yo do get one you will fond that u miss the full size keyboard and mouse and big screen.

Oh, shit I spelt something wrong? Fuck you cocksucker!

other than the power you can get a full size keyboard, mouse, and a bigger monitor for the laptop.

I do go to a pretty rich school... actually a very rich school, the average parental income is 250,000... our whole family together makes a fifth of that, and we have mass aid, and every kid in the engineering problem has to pay an extra 2000g's their first year to get their laptop (it's why I have mine). But portability really is key in college. Especially when you're trying to work and your roomate is playing music or watching tv. I mean if you go walk to a building or a study lounge w/ your work, all there is to do is your work, so you're gonna get it done, which isn't necessarily true in your room. The power of a computer is definitely not as strong for the money. I have a 1.7ghz (running at 1.2) 256 ram, 30gig HD, and geforce4 nvidia card. You don't need something even that strong.

yeah i have to say as a fellow broke college student, my parents got me a dell laptop, and its the best thing ever. for example: with the traveling i do for skiing, its great cause i can bring my work anywhere, to the cabin, in the car, etc. for xmas break i was able to bring everything i have on here, games, music, etc home, where as my roommate was complaining cause hers (a desktop) had to stay at school. and its true about what everyone else says that when your roommate is watching tv, listening to music and whatnot, you can pick up and go anywhere. with my dell i even got another 3 hr battery for free with it.

Well, some people were wrong...

laptops have gotten a TON cheaper, and anymore you can get anything for a laptop that you can for a desktop. So definantly go laptop. Here's just one of many advantages....

you can go somewhere for a weekend or whatever and take your homework woth you...

it really depends what you do with it. i go to a nerd school so we all take our laptops to class, plus mine has built in wireless ethernet and my school has it in a bunch of spots, so that helps.

i have the sony 10.4' vaio, the srx-87. its tiny and very nice, however if you get ANY laptop, spend the extra money for xp pro, becuase xp home may be the worst product this side of real player. sooo slow.

and i have a desktop too, since i am a nerd. you can't play games well on a laptop...

well i wanted a laptop for mobility reasons and just cause it takes up less space. my parents were worried about theft though so they go me a desktop. so at mid semester i sold the desktop on ebay, bought a laptop and i've had it ever since.

Teneighty_skier22, no you definatly cannot get any desktop hardware or equivalent on a laptop. Everything is more advanced for a desktop. If you want a top of the line computer, you will have to go with a desktop, that's just the way it works.

Save your money to ski and get a better computer with a desktop PC if you ask me. You're not gonna be doing any computer homework when you're on the mountains, common who are you kidding? Also, there are computer labs EVERYWHERE on campus to get your work done. With the money you'd save you could by like 2 years worth of colorado pass. Plus they're easier to fix and upgrade.

I like to ski

laptops are gonna be more expensive and very unupgradeble, but if you do get one get a good warenty cuase if a integrated componete breaks, its almost impossible to fix it. and the Area-51 M by aleinware is a very powerfull machine it just wieghts almost 10 pounds.

If you want power in a laptop get a Alienware, they use PC processors and are super powerfull and come with lots of shit and are in cool colours, downside is that they are heavy and have a short battery life, but they are better than alot of PCs out there now.

Yea their are computer labs places, but sometimes they are farther to walk to, and it's not your computer, and your files aren't on it! That means you have to floppy everything around.

get a laptop. What are you gonna do for the hours you spend in the car going to and from ski places when youre friend is driving. Play games. Watch DVD's. Most people don't need the ultra fast 3.0 ghz processors availabe in desktops now. My computer only has 350 mhz but it still works. Its slow at times but its no big deal. Laptops are more convenient and way cooler.

Gravteck, no one uses floppies any more :P Some schools have a few MB (approx 5-20) on a network drive for them to access when ever they are logged onto a computer. If that's not availible, password and share a folder on your computer. You can access this folder anywhere on the school LAN.

Well lizziebeth, it really comes down to what you want the thing for. If you want to take it to classes or to the library and plug into the network and then come home and stuff like that then you're surely gonna need a laptop. But if you can use the school computers on campus and can plug into the network in your dorm room (like me) then I'm going to reccomend a PC. I had one this year and it was great. Had the network plugged in and was downloading movies and games at 2meg/second. Good times, and if you wanna play games then a PC is where it's at, but yeah, Laptop is certainly more portable and versatile, and takes up less space, but I like my PC.

Yea, I know we use the network drives at school, but you'd be amazed at how many kids don't realize how to use them. To use it as a drive on your pc back in the room you have to mount it as a drive on your computer. My school has a program that does it for you, but when I'm on my linux os I have to mount it all manually. I don't know if all schools would have a mounter program. Plus, you have to keep 2 copies of the same file. One on the network (at least for some period of time) and then one on your HD. Hassle.

Fuck that, my family's poor by ski town standards, i can upgrade a desktop easier/sooo much cheaper, and all im paying for in a laptop is the ability to pick it up and carry it to a bazillion different places where idiots can spill their drinks on it.
