Laptop question: Intel vs AMD

There may be threads about this already, I'll check after I post this.

I need to get a new laptop and don't plan on spending too much money (in relative price terms for laptops) because I really don't need that much on it.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?series_name=dv5000_series&catLevel=2&category=notebooks/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store

I'm looking at that and upgrading some of the features, but probably won't spend more than $1000 since I'm not using it for much more than basic paper writing, dvd watching, etc.

My question is, though, should I go with the AMD or the Intel version? They offer both, as you can see on the link, for the same price? I don't know enough about that stuff to make a decision.

Thanks

It is my understanding that although the AMD's do not have as high rated GHZ, they are both better at multitasking and less heat output. They also aren't a company that has tried to put a monopoly on the market. I only use AMD.

intel blows amd out of the water in laptop performance. the current centrino platform and core duo processors are already better than any offering amd has right now. and just wait till the end of next month when the core 2 duo (merom) processors are out...64 bit+2cores+centrino chipset= better than amd.

Okay...so it looks like Intel is the better choice so far. Not sure if you checked out that link, but they have the Intel Core Duo processor, so I guess I'll go with that, unless anyone has other advice.

That website is misleading as fuck. Going with a Core Duo chip will actually cost you about a grand. But it's a great way to go.

I did the customization with the Core Duo and it came out just over a grand. I could be an idiot, though. I'll do it again and spend a few days thinking about it before I actually take the plunge.

believe what you want. but the only reason intel is dominating laptops is because of advertising and mass price.

AMD is currently testing higher than intel. they are both VERY VERY close, but AMD is higher right now.

by the way, do not get any HP products, they suck more than anything (almost anything)

not just the computer, the customer service, absoulutely horrible.

shit. I had been reading a lotta reviews on cnet.com and everything and I thought HPs seemed pretty solid. I think from what I have gathered, Dells are no good for laptops.

dells are better than hp's

most big name computer companies use a lot of the same parts, or even some generic parts. dell just has a much better warranty/customer service.

If you're gonna be upgrading to vista at the start of next year then go for the turion64 processor (64bit processor opposed to intels current 32bit. vista is designed to make use of a 64bit processor - also more applications in the future will be designed for 64bit processors, unless you want to wait for an intel 64bit to be released go with a turion) you'll also want the 128mb graphics card to get all the benefits out of vista.

Id upgrade to:

*AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-40 (2.2GHz/1MB L2 Cache)

*128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)

*1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB) (if you dont do anything else do this!)

*Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support

*FREE Upgrade to 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN

*15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)

Yeah, they aren't the same price at all. To get the AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-40 (2.2GHz/1MB L2 Cache) its only $175 added on, and to get the Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2600 (2.16 GHz) its $455 added on. So the AMD wins on price. And even disregarding price, I would pick an AMD hands down.

thats cuz you have mac nick.

go for a mac.

they are so much nicer looking anyways.

and they rock for movies and photos....think of the possiblitys for skiing...they are endless

I have but one request. Would the mac zealots please stop throwing this shit around, it is played. Perhaps in the early '90s Macs where better for movies and editing, but thats no longer true. In fact its arguable that PCs are better, simply because you can upgrade stuff so much easier. So in conclusion, that argument is null and void. Thank you and have a good night.

Cork13....Macs are good, but one of your main points was that macs are so much cooler or better looking...not trying to be a dick, but I could really care less how the laptop looks, as long as it runs well.

And I'm ruling out macs just cause I don't do much graphic/video stuff anymore.

The real question is.. why is FreeRideZone.com still online??

but seriously, AMD chips are totally the way to go. They're less expensive for equal performance. splurge on a faster hard drive and more RAM

I'm NOT going to tell you to just get a mac.

I would recommend though, not going with HP. Look into IBM perhaps, the thinkpads are very reliable, and IBM has good customer service.

I am a firm believer in Intel chips, but for just DVD watching, internet surfing, IM, writing papers and stuff, you really don't need to spend any extra money. So if the Intel is the same price, go for it, but if its more expensive, then just go with AMD.

The new Core2 Duo is a beast of a chipset. Cant go wrong with it.

AMD has lots of new shit coming, but for once intel is having to play catch up so they are motivated.

i dont know why you wouldnt go mac but if your going pc, i would imagine AMD would run cooler than intel considering how it works compared to a pentium

its not the company its the inside of the computer. by saying dells suck you might as well say that harddrives suck, because it is that much of a generalizastion. im really tired and dont feel like going into details, but your wrong.

aaaahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahah

...aaahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

....buy a mac...fucker.

Wow, your repeated typing the the letters A and H has entirely convinced me to go buy a mac. Congratualtions on a job well done.
