So im looking around for laptops and i came across this one that has everything i need:

eMachines M6809 AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (1.6GHz) / 802.11g Wireless / 15.4-inch WXGA / 512MB DDR / 80GB HDD / DVD±RW / Windows XP Home

I read some reviews on it and find out some not so good news and I dont know how much this is going to affect me:

1) eMachines was bought by gateway and apperently they dont make Laptops anymore so I dont know how that could affect me

2) There are problems with the OEM version of windows that comes with the system and people complain that the SP2 that windows offers to update the version or windows is flawed too and people have to install the reboot cd etc.

- How do you go about installing XP Pro on a

system because one guy said he did that and

has had no problems with the SP2 or anything

like that.

Anything else, pointers or such you guy want to add?

i don't like eMachines. my family has two and they were good for like the first 6 months and now neither of them have internet and are broken somehow.

its an Athlon man...they run slower then the P4's but they have a fast FSB

its 1100 for that package

Since im not seeing any love for the eMachine's, does anyone else know where i can find a laptop with these specs for about this price?

well if you are a gamer, that notebook should do great because of the 9600 w/ 64mb dedicated. the emachines are becoming very popular mostly because of the price, and if you treat them like you should treat a notebook, it will work fine for a long time. i have a friend with the m6805 and has had it for about a year no problems except for SP2 you need to update the bios. the battery life could be better though (2hrs max). it's pretty light for a 15.4" and it only has one dead pixel which is pretty normal. one thing I have heard tho is that if your rough with it, the latches get loose and the screen will start wobbling back and forth.

but if your the gfx / video type, I would recommend a pentium M notebook since a64s are gamers. centrino systems usually have like mad battery life (like mine - dothan 1.8, i get about 3.5hrs w/ wireless).

 
well i think that if you have a p4 then u can put the usb serial port in and then the ram prossesser will run faster through the main data bank and then the free porn wil come though to ur eyes

 
btw, newegg sometimes has some deals on acers and abs notebooks. also, discountlaptops.com has crazy good service and notebooks, but they are a tad more pricey and sell mostly centrino stuff.

 
listen man people who are saying that its slow dont know what their talking about. Mhz dont mean shit apple proved it long ago and so did AMD. thats a good laptop. and knowing E-machines it should come with a good price tag.

If for some reason you want power (as in your going to do video editing, gaming, CAD, 3d animation) then your going to be spending a minimum of $2000 on a laptop. but for normal computer use that one will be just perfect.

PM me or post here saying what tyoe of stuff you are going to be doing and ill tell you what you should do.

^ for the most part, compared to the pentium M, yes. the amd turion chips should be out soon, and they are supposed to give the intel chips a run for their money for battery life. but if you play games, don't hesitate, get an amd.

 
yes it does eat batteries but most powerful laptops are demanding and will eat up your battery in less than 4 hours. if you want battery life get a pentium M.

once again the MHZ Myth is destroyed here with a Pentium M at 1.8 Ghz is comparable to a 3 Ghz P4 or to an Athlon 3000

its a good alternative to the desktop CPUs that many manufaturers put in their laptops know a days

i dont know much about the pentium M....how is it running multi programs?

the main problem with that computer is that it is not a MOBILE version for the processor. the battery life will suffer becuase of this. That processor is good, espeically for that price. WIN XP SP2 is fine. I dont see any problem with emachines laptops, but I goont like their desktops becuase of the cases. Other then that, they are cheap, but just fine. you cant expect to get top of the line, unless you pay top of the line prices.

pro has a couple extra features such as some advanced administrative tools. the ability to vreate and sign onto a domain and being able to use the remote assistance built into windows XP that no one has ever used.

I think that the reason he advised you to use pro is because it has pro at the end and that makes you so cool. if you think having "Windows XP Pro" when you start up your computer is worth the extra money go ahead but getting windows XP pro is most likely useless in your case.

Get the Gateway 7426GX notebook. its $1500 and has a boat load of shit. the nerd at best buy also told me it can play games like doom3 on the highest settings. here are some of its specs:

stay away from emachines, one of the crappiest pieces of shit, take a look at the HP dv1000 series, very pretty, or go to notebookreview.com and take a look around there, it has everything u need to know

 
XP pro is a very smart marketing ploy by microsoft, almost nothing is different. stick with xp home. i just built a dell and it's pretty nice 1.86 PM, 1Gb ram, 60 Gb 7200 rpm drive, 128 mb vid card, and all that, about 2000 bucks. and it ships tomorrow yay

 
hp's suck ass. I would never buy another one I had an hp notebook and i sent it back like 4 times for warranty repairs within the first year and they finally came me my money back,.... in the form of a credit. so I bought an hp desktop, and it's been a little better. if you're not gona get the best get the cheapest.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.
 
buy from a reputable brand, my toshiba has held up without any problems for 3 years so far.

XP Pro has very useful features. but if you dont know what those features are you probably dont need them.

would the processor in this set up be better because it says Mobile AMD opposed to the regual AMD?

most of the time the mobile a64s refer to the DTR (desktop replacement) chips, they typically run slightly cooler and all that jazz. that gateway looks pretty sweet, but the only difference i saw was the faster chip, when i'm hoping your looking at the emachines for about 1000-1100 vs the gateway at 1500 (unless it's cheaper somewhere else).

xp pro is geared towards the corporate / domain environment while home is naturally geared towards personal use. you can't run dual cpus w/ home and you can't join a domain w/ home - even though you can still install the adminpak to get extra admin tools and crap. there's really no reason for you to get pro for the extra cost (if you pay for it), people say home boots faster and plays games better, but theres really no difference in that aspect IMHO.

i suggest you check out http://techreport.com forums for some better info. http://www.notebookforums.com/ is also pretty dope.

 
seriously dude invest in intel, if you want a laptop good on batterys get one with centrino. if you want one with good performance as a desktop replacement like i do go for a mobile P4, mines a 2.4 and its still great on batteries

he said mac cause they're puttin G5's in their notebooks soon, i can assume in 17 months. and i'm gettin a mobile processor and i'm plannin on playing games on it. it should be alright

 
I would say go with an apple but they are most likely out of your price range. Some comparible apple's to the emachine's specs would be the 14 inch iBook (superdrive) or either the 12 or 15 inch PowerBook (superdrive). You definelty are getting a better deal with the emachine since you get the everything at a fairly cheap price but it all depends on what you are planning on doing with it. What is your maximum price for a laptop?

i'd also recommend slickdeals.net and xpbargains for uber coupons on different sites. especially dell stuff, like $750 of a 1500 notebook, the only thing is, these coupons expire after a 1000 uses so they get used up in about 20-30 minutes when they openup.
